POPSWars sending U.S. into ruin. Obama’s Afghan “surge” of 30,000 new troops will cost an additional $33 billion — more than Germany’s total defence budget. Military and intelligence spending relentlessly increase as unemployment heads over 10% and the economy bleeds red ink. America has become the Sick Man of the Western Hemisphere, an economic cripple like the defunct Ottoman Empire. The Pentagon now accounts for half of total world military spending. Add America’s rich NATO allies and Japan, and the figure reaches 75%. China and Russia combined spend only a paltry 10% of what the U.S. spends on defence. There are 750 U.S. military bases in 50 nations and 255,000 service members stationed abroad, 116,000 in Europe, nearly 100,000 in Japan and South Korea. Military spending gobbles up 19% of federal spending and at least 44% of tax revenues. During the Bush administration, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars — funded by borrowing — cost each American family more than $25,000.

IBM is holding international business meetings using avatars in the 3D virtual world of Second Life. From shop class to math the laptop is becoming the key to knowledge. Pretty interesting. POPSLet's talk about defense spending.... It's the pink elephant in the room. It's very bloated, and can't even be accounted for. It's our nations defense budget. We can cut A LOT there and help shore up the national debt.

POPSThe Sanctity of Military Spending is Obscene The facts about America's bloated, excessive, always-increasing military spending are now well-known. The U.S. spends almost as much on military spending as the entire rest of the world combined, and spends roughly six times more than the second-largest spender, China. Even as the U.S. sunk under increasingly crippling levels of debt over the last decade, defense spending rose steadily, sometimes precipitously. That explosion occurred even as overall military spending in the rest of the world decreased, thus expanding the already-vast gap between our expenditures and the world's. As one "defense" spending watchdog group put it: "The US military budget was almost 29 times as large as the combined spending of the six 'rogue' states (Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan and Syria) who spent $14.65 billion."

POPSThe Calligrapher's Daughter The Calligrapher's Daughter is excellent on so many levels. It is a historical novel that chronicles Japan's tragic 35-year occupation of Korea, its attempts to obliterate "Korea" and turn it into a western province of Japan by relocating children and families to Japan, teaching only Japanese in the schools, and by a myriad of other, more violent methods

POPSROBIN WILLIAMS PLAN FOR PEACE 4) All future visitors will be thoroughly checked and limited to 90 day visits unless given a special permit. No one from a terrorist nation would be allowed in. If you don't like it there, change it yourself, don't hide here. Asylum would not ever be available to anyone. We don't need any more cab drivers. 5) No "students" over age 21. The older ones are the bombers. If they don't attend classes, they get a "D" and it's back home, baby. 6) The US will make a strong effort to become self sufficient energy wise. This will include developing non-polluting sources of energy, but will require a temporary drilling of oil in the Alaskan wilderness. The caribou will have to cope for a while.

POPSOh those evil, evil Americans..... " - Denmark has donated 10 million kroner ($1.9 million) and Finland is giving euro1.25 million ($1.8 million). - South Korea has pledged aid worth $1 million. - Irish telecommunications company Digicel said it would donate $5 million and help repair the phone network. - Spain has pledged euro3 million ($4.37 million), and sent rescue teams and 100 tons of equipment. - Germany gave euro1.5 million ($2.17 million) and sent an immediate response team. - India and China will each donate $1 million." YAY Ireland, damn fine donation considering the size of this country and the recent economic crisis.
