POPSMusic Monday: Randall Kimball A track from Randall Kimball. Randall attended Berkley, and spent a lot of time at the Keystone Tavern listening to greats like John Lee Hooker, Jerry Garcia, and the Greg Kihn Band. He's definitely taken on some of these influences while also bringing in some of his Indian vibes.

POPSSuspected serial killer leads police to bodies, won't be charged FBI let him out to do work for them. The murders were committed while he was working for the FBI. If he isn't convicted, then the FBI will not have to take responsibility "officially" or explain how he was able to kill people while under their watch... Good for a TV Movie probably...Heck, there is probably a book about this sort of thing...

POPSRaising The Bar
"Dismissal from school was the punishment along with excommunication if they refused to change their lifestyle. While the cases are too numerous to discuss in this article, one example of ferreting out Gays is worth discussing. This involved five young Gay BYU students all in their 20s, three of whom had recently completed missions for the LDS Church. Four of these men "had been trapped in the on-going homosexual witch hunts at BYU and subjected to the church's disciplinary program. The fifth young man had confessed voluntarily to church leaders that he was Gay. Each one was harshly interviewed in 1965 by Apostle Spencer Kimball later church president. Unfortunately, when the church rejected them because they were Gay, it destroyed them. All five students killed themselves. Two of the students committed suicide by over-dosing on drugs, one hung himself, another blew his own head apart with a gun and the last jumped seven stories to his death. POPSThe Comedy Stylings of Shecky McCain At the time, McCain’s spokesperson (Torrie Clark, yes, that one) alleged that this was story was some manipulation by the Richard Kimball campaign. Yep, it’s always the other guy’s fault. I wonder if the reporter on that story, Norma Coile, was treated to the screaming phone call that McCain has treated so many local reporters to when they dare write a negative story about him. UPDATE - Because you demanded it, here is a PDF of the original article from 1986.

POPSCity Slickers Turn Tropical Entrepreneurs: An Eco-Adventure
Imagine going after your dream business…on a tropical island. What does it really take to build an island resort? In 2002, four city slickers set out to build their dream business in the Panamanian rainforest: called Tranquilo Bay. All of the buildings at Tranquilo Bay—are constructed from steel, virtually unheard of in that corner of Panama: but they wanted to protect against termites, sea air, and earthquake damage. Jim Kimball and Jay Viola knew nothing about construction before beginning work on the buildings. They learned everything they needed from the Internet during Sunday visits to the mainland. “We built Tranquilo Bay inside the rainforest overlooking the Caribbean Sea and the beautiful Panamanian Jungle. Our central location within the archipelago of Bocas del Toro permits us to explore some of the most biologically diverse areas of Panama and Central America: an archipelago of some 68 tropical islands” http://www.tranquilobay.com/home.htm

POPS Religion of Peace, Harmony and Tolerance Roger Kimball examines Columbia’s decision to allow Ahmeanie to make a speech on campus from the context of the moral bankruptcy of liberalism. Consider it a must-read. Over 150 college campuses where conservatives are planning Islamofascism Awareness Weeks. That’s great, but I hope many, many more choose to participate, as well.

POPSHammer is not the Building The age old problem of confusion of the plan with reality, the map with the territory, the means with the ends and data, information, and wisdom. We humans NEVER deal with ANYTHING in "real time", NOR "reality". We ONLY have our perception, which is delayed, and is essentially a "pattern match" with existing mental patterns. Understanding how little data actually flows in from the eyes compared to what our brain produces for us makes us realize that "virtual" is all we know. The layers of virtualization continue to become more tempting however.
