My perfect stick figure family
Lexica
by Lexica  10-22-2009
More: I'd maybe get a set of stick figure stickers if I could find the ones I'm looking for – three kids, a guinea pig, a fish, two cats, a step dad, a mother, and a pair of dogs with a line through them because I lost them in the divorce. Though I'm not sure there is enough room on the back glass for that much honesty.

Natural, Organic Halloween Candy
mschllbrwn
by mschllbrwn  10-13-2009
Could it be that Halloween is lurking just around the corner? Yikes! That means it is time to bust out the Halloween candy. As it turns out, we've been on the search for the ideal Halloween candy since last October. We had a number of criteria to fill: * We wanted a candy that was as organic and natural as possible, and preferably even containing some healthy ingredients, as opposed to just sugary stuff. * We wanted a candy that tasted delicious and would satisfy kids of all ages. * We needed a candy that was securely, individually wrapped, so that it could be handed out at Halloween time without concerned parents having to question its safety. * We wanted a candy that was affordable and would appeal to budget-conscious families. * We preferred a candy that would be safe for children with allergies (nuts, soy, gluten, etc.)

Camp kids have cancer, disorders Jerry Ensminger, a 24-year Marine Corps veteran, said his daughter, Jane, born in 1976 at Camp Lejeune, was diagnosed with leukemia at age 6 and died at age 9. Jeff Byron, a former Marine air traffic controller, moved with his family into base housing in 1982, three months after his first daughter Andrea was born and two years before his daughter Rachel was born. Rachel is developmentally disabled, has spina bifida and was born with a cleft palate, he said. Andrea has a rare bone marrow syndrome known as aplastic anemia, according to Byron's testimony. Dr. Michael Gros, a Navy obstetrician at Camp Lejeune in the early 1980s, was diagnosed with lymphoma after living in Camp Lejeune housing, he said. Gros said he has had to give up his medical practice and his treatment has cost more than $4.5 million. Israel Cruelty Towards Palestinian Children.
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  10-2-2009    1
The children are held in solitary confinement, in tiny cells, like the "Lockup", a cell 1.5m X 1.5m, or the "Closet", a cell the height of a person, in which one can stand but not sit or move, or the "Grave", a box that's closed from the top and measures 1m X 60 cm with a depth of about 80 cm. Good thing kids are flexible, eh? And the children are tried by a military tribunal. You can bet the Israelis don't treat their own kids like this. Wonder what kind of effect such treatment will have on this generation of Palestinian kids?

Poor Children Get Sex Offenders For Care Providers
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  9-25-2009
This article almost reads like a joke, but it's not. Most unfortunately not. And, as one can see from the story, it's nobody's fault. Wonder how long they will spend "investigating" before they move the kids to safety? How much do you want to bet that the parents are kept in the dark about the nature of the caretakers? Truly, I've never been impressed with the ability of states to oversee their programs, which is why I strongly disagree with state-run "Health Exchanges".

The Naked Chef in the Fattest Town on Earth
dmoonme1
by dmoonme1  9-20-2009    1
This is probably the unhealthiest country on Earth as well. Processed foods are killers that's for sure. It was nice of Jamie Oliver to say that "they are not stupid or ignorant". I think that may well be the case. However in W. Virginia, one's income does come into view. Some folks down there don't have enough money to keep up there food cache, and aren't able to cook from "scrathch". Meals are on a day to day basis. Those school lunches are probably the best meal of the day for some of those kids. However, I'm sure this guy has never been to a real "rural" W virginia town. They don't get fat there. When you don't have enough food for the family it just kind of works out that way.

Single Parents can create stable children
ronhuxley
by ronhuxley  9-7-2009
I came across the article below and felt a mixture of joy and sadness. Joy because it is good to see research finally state a truth about family strengths without the political stigmas. The article states that in an equally stable home, single parent families were no different than married, two-parent families, when it came to the emotional wellness of the children. That should be good news for single parents. It is also challenging news because it is harder for single parents to find a stable balance. Many of the single parent families I have worked with struggle with finances, quality child care and emotional support. Just do the math: One parent is stretched much farther than two. What the study didn't mention was how many children were in each type of home. One child is much easier to manage, for a single parent or two-parent home, than several! So my sadness comes from the fact that the article/study didn't offer more suggestions on how single parent families need ongoin

The far right says Obama is bad for our kids
ratilfar
by ratilfar  9-4-2009    9
Wrong. I never imagined the outbreak of right-wing crazy that Obama's gesture would provoke, and this time it's hard not to see racism behind the hysteria. The message is "Obama's coming for our children!" the standard cry against scary boogeymen in every culture. I mean, really, what besides Obama's race could make him so scary to these people? That he's a Marxist socialist fascist Nazi? I'd argue that the only reason those extreme epithets have taken hold goes back to reason No. 1: Our first black president is provoking some outsize and irrational reactions. Especially since, as has now been well-documented, President George H.W. Bush addressed American students in 1991, and Ronald Reagan did so via C-SPAN in 1988. (Bush talked mainly about the importance of education, while Reagan hailed the benefits of low taxes and the line-item veto.) President George W. Bush appealed to "the children of the country" to back the war against the Taliban in Afghanistan in 2001, to no public crit

Affordable Customized Soccer Jerseys for All.

Times are tight and this is probably not the season to ask the players (and in the case of youth leagues, their families) to pay extra for snazzier soccer jerseys, even if they would give the team a little bit of a ego boost to take the to the pitch in something a little cooler than the opposition.

You are probably nodding in agreement, but also thinking that would be great, if only your teams finances could stretch that far. Times are tight and this is probably not the season to ask the players (and in the case of youth leagues, their families) to pay extra for snazzier soccer jerseys, even if they would give the team a little bit of a ego boost to take the to the pitch in something a little cooler than the opposition.
