POPSSurprise spectator at Garrido hearing More: Hall was a blackjack dealer in South Lake Tahoe when Garrido kidnapped her in November 1976 and drove her to a storage unit in Reno that he had stocked with pornography, sex devices and a mattress. He raped her repeatedly over the course of several hours. He was convicted of federal kidnapping charges and of rape in Nevada. Under sentencing guidelines now in place, Garrido would have been behind bars for more than two decades - and wouldn't have been free in 1991 when Dugard was snatched off the street in South Lake Tahoe. But under 1970s-era sentencing laws, Garrido was eligible for federal parole after just 10 years, and he was set free in 1988. "I intend to be at as many (hearings) as I can," Hall said. "I'm not going to shut up and go away like the parole board told me to do 21 years ago. I have my own personal reasons for wanting to see him put away."

POPSKidnap victim, children go to hotel to begin new life Dugard faces a change of identity -- she apparently was known as "Allissa" while living behind her captor's house -- and "has no idea what's out there," Morrison said. She may actually miss her captors because they apparently have been the center of her world for so long, she said. Probyn said he had lost hope over the years that his stepdaughter would ever be found. Now, he and Dugard's mother are faced with a potentially difficult reunion with their daughter -- and grandchildren they didn't know existed until this week. Garrido showed up on the campus of the University of California at Berkeley with his two daughters and tried to get permission to hand out literature and speak police officers contacted Garrido's parole officer. The presence of Allissa and the two children surprised the parole officer, who had never seen them during visits to Garrido's house.

POPS"Yes the Taliban Repeatedly Raped Me... But They Respected Me"
referred to Joanie de Rijke’s case. “She was raped, but she was not angry. The journalist who went looking for the Taliban in Afghanistan saw her curiosity end in a cruel ordeal of multiple rape. While this would make others angry or sad, this journalist shows understanding. She says: ‘They also respected me.’ And she was given tea and biscuits.” “This story” Wilders said, “is a perfect illustration of the moral decline of our elites. They are so blinded by their own ideology that they turn a blind eye to the truth. Rape? Well, I would put this into perspective, says the leftist journalist: the Taliban are not monsters. Our elites prefer to deny reality rather than face it. One would expect: a woman is being raped and finds this unbearable. But this journalist is not angry because the Muslim involved also showed respect. Our elites, whether they are politicians, journalists, judges, subsidy gobblers or civil servants, are totally clueless.

POPSGambian government terrorizes citizens with witch-hunts In Makumbaya many residents did not want to speak to journalists for fear of reprisals. "I cannot talk to you (...) it is not that I don't want to explain my ordeal to you but because I don't want to be arrested," a woman in her fifties told AFP. Gambia, the smallest country on the African mainland, has been ruled by Jammeh since he grabbed power in a bloodless coup in 1994. In recent years it has come increasingly under fire over its poor human rights record. Jammeh's opponents, real and perceived, also find themselves subjected to daily rights violations including torture and unlawful arrests, human rights organisations say. Many in rural Gambia are have fled to neighbouring Senegal to escape the witch hunts.

POPSVirtual Kidnapping - Is someone calling you?? I just received a cell call from an unknown number. Without answering I Googled the number and found it may have been a "virtual kidnapping" scam, or some other ploy to separate me from my money. I heard a story (sorry, can't cite source) about a woman who went into a panic thinking a loved one had been kidnapped during her vacation in Mexico, and spent half a day trying to get help for said loved one. Turns out the loved one was out having fun, away from a cell phone. This poor woman, and several others she contacted for assistance, all suffered at the hands of a con artist. Fortunately for her, no money was exchanged, but I am sure others are not as fortunate. Be aware of who is calling you...

POPSAlice Donovan, Coming Home Angie Gilchrist and Jennifer Warner were left, not only without their mother, but with the open wound of not knowing where her final resting place would be. When a family member is missing, there's no closure, no conclusion to the grieving process, and daily torture. The case made national news, the two killers were sentenced to death row, and the news dropped off the radar, but Angie and Jen, with their emotions boiling over, continued to live the daily nightmare.

POPSThe evil behind the smiles – sex trafficking is slavery More: Finally, Sina was freed in a police raid, and found herself blinded by the first daylight she had seen in years. The raid was organized by Somaly Mam, a Cambodian woman who herself had been sold into the brothels but managed to escape, educate herself and now heads a foundation fighting forced prostitution. After being freed, Sina began studying and eventually became one of Somaly’s trusted lieutenants. They now work together, in defiance of death threats from brothel owners, to free other girls. To get at Somaly, the brothel owners kidnapped and brutalized her 14-year-old daughter… I hope that Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton will recognize slavery as unfinished business on the foreign policy agenda. The abolitionist cause simply hasn’t been completed as long as 14-year-old girls are being jolted with electric shocks — right now, as you read this — to make them smile before oblivious tourists.

POPSA tiny bit of justice for victims of "Dirty War" How horrible for this woman, all the other kidnapped "adoptees", and, of course, their real parents! "After being taken by the authorities, Ms Sampallo lived with her adoptive parents, suspecting nothing, until 2001, when a group formed by grandmothers of the stolen babies, tracked her down and revealed her true identity." "It is believed some 500 children were given to families sympathetic to the military government. Eighty-eight have since been tracked down and those behind this case are hoping the publicity will provoke more questions"
