POPSClips from The Shawshank Redemption When this movie was released I was preparing for my first Med cruise in the Navy. Fear ruled my every thought. The idea of journeying to foreign lands by sea didn't agree with my sense of security. While watching Shawshank I learned that everything we do (each experience) has a reason even though we feel it does not fit into our life design. I always come back to this thought: Before I came on this earth to experience my life, I signed a contract agreeing to everything that I would experience, seen or unseen. When I signed up for the Navy, I did just that. Now looking back on the Med cruise I would not have it any other way. The only regret I have concerns my lack of attention to details and not documenting the experience through photographs or journals. Relying on my memories is really not an accurate means of collecting facts.

POPSStumble 'search' Results - Searching index "If only I had known!" was the bitter cry of the searcher who relied just on search engines to search the Web. Although many popular search engines boast about their ability to index information on the Web, more of it (dynamically-generated pages, certain file formats, and information held within numerous databases) has become invisible to their searching spiders. Much of the Web is hiding information from us, but we can access this hidden content! Learn how you can reveal the secrets of these dark, hiding places.

POPSHyped up drug studies If you read the full article, some of the methods they use to make drugs look good are shocking. For example, if a drug doesn't reduce deaths from strokes, but does reduce the incidence of disability in survivors, they add the two numbers together in one column and claim that the drug reduces "death and disability" (meaning "death + disability," but people assume it means that the likelihood of death is reduced, too).

POPSParents blame kids’ failing test scores on Wikipedia Another case of misuse of a wonderful resource and giving the resource a bad name! One comment at the site says this: "My university docks marks if you quote or reference Wikipedia. The nice thing about it is that it usually presents the “facts” in a general and easy to read manner, but provides references for more in depth study. Wikipedia should be an aid to study, but not used as a study resource exclusively. That’s what peer reviewed journals and books are for. In my high school days there was a similar problem with Encarta."

POPSThe Legacy of Charles Fort Many people over the space of 5000 yrs of human civilization have claimed to be prophets, messiahs, holy men or the Illuminated as compared to the rest of us "mere" normals. Some have claimed to be masters of the Black Arts (Aleister Crowley, et al) and some have claimed to be immortal or possessing long lives (Comte de Saint-Germain, Cagliostro, John Dee) or incredible psychic awareness (Edgar Cayce, Uri Gellar, Madame Blavatsky) but as far as I know only one man made his life out of collecting facts that were witnessed by many and researched diligently by him that still astound us. You have seen the kinds of things I am talking about on the X-Files or read of it in the Tabloids, but this man never took it as more than a wonderful reach that man's scientific knowledge was far from complete. Charles Fort only collected curiosities as I do. He was my inspiration. This is his legacy.

POPSEarth's poles long overdue for reversal I've been following this for at least the last 20 years when I first discovered this phenomenon in Junior High. This is nothing new. The science journals have been writing about this for at least 3 decades. There is a cycle to this, it's not a matter of if but of when.
