Sonia is from Boston, MA. Boston is the capital and largest city of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The largest city in New England, Boston is considered the economic and cultural center of the region and is sometimes regarded as the unofficial “Capital of New England”. Sonia is a student at Tufts University and recently got married to her cousin. This photo was taken when they left for their honeymoon on this “Hummer”. Hummer is a brand of off-road vehicles sold by General Motors (GM). During this trip they visited many Boston landmarks. The Massachusetts New State House sits at the top of Beacon Hill, overlooking Boston Common. It was designed by Charles Bulfinch and built in 1795 on land originally owned by John Hancock. This new State House remains the home of the Massachusetts legislature and the wonderful dome is covered in 23.5 carat gold leaf, making it very valuable. The State House is open daily for tours

The states and the people vs. the U.S. of Centralization
dl211
by dl211  7-26-2009    3
Something is changing in our political culture. All these resolutions have passed state legislatures. It’s not just lone “whacko” governors doing the deed. Deliberative bodies have decided these measures. Something big may be afoot. What is it? Opposition to bigness and “limitlessness” in the federal government. Randy Brogdon expressed the idea well enough. He said that Oklahoma is telling folks in Washington, DC, “loud and clear to end all federal mandates that are beyond the scope of powers specifically outlined in the Constitution.” He specifically mentioned the Patriot Act, No Child Left Behind and some provisions of Homeland Security as federal usurpations of state powers.

Cadet Choice Award Nominees Announced
JeannieGrrl
by JeannieGrrl  1-17-2009
I can almost promise that the closest votes will be for Tom Cruise or Daniel Craig, not for what the roles actually were but because the cadets almost always pick military roles or as close as they can even if other roles would better suit the criteria. And Bale's "Wayne" really wasn't much of a role per say - Wayne was barely even visible in the bigger scheme. Myself, out of those choices, not having seen most of the films, I would have to pick Harrison Ford. Just from the clips and trailers and reviews anyhow...

Hey you remember how the Hancock started……….. John Hancock (Will Smith) is an unhappy and reluctant superhero who is living in his own world. There are heroes... there are superheroes... and then there's Hancock (Will Smith). A hard-drinking lush finds himself thrust into superhero mode in director Peter Berg's unconventional look at the private life of a crime-fighter.

NY State Archivist Accused Of Stealing Historic Artifacts
merrie
by merrie  1-29-2008    1
Joseph Romito, a lawyer and history buff in Richmond, Va., tipped authorities off after he spotted one of the items for sale on eBay and realized it was supposed to belong to New York state. After searching the suspect's home this past weekend, officials found hundreds of documents and artifacts belonging to the state. Officials believe the theft goes back to 2002, Cuomo spokesman John Milgram said. It's unclear how much Lorello profited from his sales. In some cases he went to trade shows and exchanged the state's items for others, authorities said. But officials said in just two sales of Davy Crockett Almanacs he received more than $5,000.

Johhny Can't Write
Marcariel
by Marcariel  9-11-2007    8
Have you looked at any young person's handwriting lately? I can barely read my 9 year old grandson's printing, and he is to start learning cursive this year. I doubt that this will be legible either. My great-uncle Lawrence had the most beautiful handwriting. It was all swirls and curls in beautifully, carefully written words. This has become a thing of the past. Too Bad!

Penmanship takes a back seat in elementary schools
thekay
by thekay  7-23-2007
Handwriting and even printing has gotten worse and even more disasterous in some cases over the past 10 years- I have definitely seen how how the printing looks takes a huge backseat in the upper grades. It is as if teachers of upper grades no longer care about how the students' work looks and they just assume that the student(s) could write nicer if they really had to. While I am all for daily practice in handwriting, I recommend that the cursive handwriting does not officially start in schools until about grade 5... students aged 5 to 9 should focus on basic printing first- if you rush it, all their writing will morph into illegible messes. They can't all be doctors!
