POPSDemocrats Push to Repeal First Amendment! If this gets any traction – we all need to make sure we get on the horn with our representatives and senators and tell them they better not mess with our most fundamental of all rights – those contained in the First Amendment. You appeal the First Amendment and it opens the doors for the government to take over EVERY aspect of our lives. For those of you who may have forgotten – here is EVERYTHING that is in The First Amendment Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. These idiots are treading in some very dangerous waters here.

POPSConstitutional Amendment to Combat Supreme Court Decision on Campaign Finance In the Senate, Sen. Arlen Specter, Pennsylvania Democrat, wrote on Twitter this weekend that he is also authoring an amendment. Sen. John Kerry, Massachusetts Democrat, jumped on the bandwagon Tuesday, offering his support for one during a committee hearing. While Specter has been public about his intentions, he has been mum on the details. Specter spokeswoman Kate Kelly only said she expects the senator to further unveil his plans on the Senate floor in the future. She said she did not know when that would be or exactly what will be in the amendment. This is all in response to the Supreme Court’s Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission decision, released on Jan. 21, that independent expenditures by corporations on political broadcasts cannot be limited, striking down part of the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill. Republicans praised the ruling as a victory for the First Amendment.

POPSHow He Got Caught Among the revelations in Andrew Young's new book about John Edwards is that once the whole sordid truth about Edwards and Rielle Hunter emerged, Bill Clinton "called the senator and said, in effect, 'How'd you get caught?' " It's not a surprising question, given the source. But the better question may be how Edwards got away with it for so long. Between early 2006, when the senator's dalliance with his campaign videographer began, and August 2008, when he confessed to it, Edwards engaged in all sorts of subterfuges in an attempt to hide his liaison with Hunter from his wife, his staff, and the press. The Politician, written by Edwards' primary romantic facilitator, provides a blow-by-blow account how he did it—and why he failed. Consider this list a kind of public service to any elected official ever considering a secret romp. What a dog this guy is.....

POPSA Radical Treasure Think about how many times you've read disparaging comments here on CM alone about liberals, feminists, those who want to share the wealth with labor that help make profits, and civil rights for gays or lesbians. It's because people like that think they profit from the system we live under and they don't want to see it changed for the betterment of society. So the nitwits spout their rhetoric because it is the only way they have to validate their identity in this world, and more importantly because their survival depends upon it. And because they think they feel powerful by trying to control, condemn and stereotype. Howard Zinn? "That he was considered radical says way more about this society than it does about him."

POPSIt was as if we were being lectured on marital fidelity by John Edwards or Mark Sanford. Perhaps the most striking aspect of last night's speech, though, was that Obama spoke as if the last year hadn't happened; as if he had not been president; and as if Congress had not been controlled by Democrats. He sought to portray himself as an outsider and a reformer, an antidote to cynicism, and a post-partisan, unifying force. He wanted to cast himself as an idealist, an inspirational figure, Mr. Hope & Change.

POPS Trial Lawyers Buy Democrats in Congress (98% of total "contributions"!)
Since Jan. 3, 2009, 581 contributions worth $1,261,023 have been made by donors identifying themselves as employees of the 15 firms (contributions by employees who did not identify their employer are not reflected in this data). Democratic candidates and committees received $1,241,978, or 98 percent of the total. The most generous of these lucrative sources of Democratic campaign cash was the Dallas-based Baron & Budd, best known for the late Fred Baron, who was finance chairman for former Sen. John Edwards' 2008 presidential run. Thus far in 2009, Baron & Budd employees have contributed $212,958 to 21 Democrats, and not a cent to Republicans. Second on the list is the New York-based Grant Eisenhofer firm, with employees contributing $184,078 to seven Democrats and no Republicans. Of the 138 total recipients from employees of all 15 of the firms, 122 were Democrats and just 16 were Republicans. The Democrats received contributions averaging more than $4,700,

POPSPalin & the Dysfunctional Political Class The current GOP seems to look for mediocrity...someone who will *fit*...a person who appears *electable*, a vanilla-type. It seems to stand for everything and yet nothing. Whether Mrs. Palin would make a good Presidential candidate, I don't know. But I'm weary to death of the clandestine people who mouth conservative rhetoric and then fold when the game is on. Give me a candidate who gives me a clear choice; not one who bows to the current political breeze blowing through Washington. I've just about lost all "Hope" because I don't see any on the horizon.

POPSA Fire Risk That Clears Security I wonder what would happen if someone packed their laptop or other device, powered by lithium batteries, in their checked baggage. If something caught fire in the baggage hold, that to me, would be a major catastrophe. Like that airliner that went down in the Everglades when the packaged air generators ignited....

POPSAn Obama speechwriter moves to Massachusetts...she can't afford health insurance An Obama speechwriter moves to Massachusetts, a state with "universal health care," and finds out she can't afford insurance. Turns out that individual mandates and the requirement that insurance cover everything for everybody make insurance super-expensive (exactly what some are warning will happen with ObamaCare.) It's like the saying goes, "If you think health care is expensive now, wait until it's free."

POPS Universal Health Care Mecca In the past, I paid attention to the health care debate as a speechwriter who prepared speeches, talking points, op-eds, and debate prep material on the topic at different times for John Edwards, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and others. Now, I'm paying attention because I'm a citizen up the creek without a paddle. Since I care more about my country than my personal pride, here's how I lost my insurance: I moved. That's right, I moved from Washington, D.C., back to Massachusetts, a state with universal health care. In D.C., I had a policy with a national company, an HMO, and surprisingly I was very happy with it. I had a fantastic primary care doctor at Georgetown University Hospital. As a self-employed writer, my premium was $225 a month, plus $10 for a dental discount. In Massachusetts, the cost for a similar plan is around $550, give or take a few dollars. My risk factors haven't changed. I didn't stop writing and become a stunt double. I don't smoke.

POPSUPDATE: Obama Blog Propaganda is Government-Wide of the Department of Justice, Holder and President Obama. One conservative editor recently told the Muffled Oar that they have noticed a significant increase in the number and aggressiveness of comments to stories critical of the Holder Justice Department. “There is clearly a designed effort to rebut stories that are exposing the Holder Justice Department as more political than the last. We’ve seen a change in the pattern of anonymous emails we receive and comments posted at our paper’s webpage.” One shivers at the thought of a team of Department of Justice Bloggers anonymously trolling the web to spin the message of a President. It is particularly terrifying when those same anonymous government employees at the Department attack media outlets and newspapers anonymously. How much longer before the Blog Squad operates in the open to intimidate political opponents and critics? Posted by Isaac Muzzey

POPSBeck speaks to 7,000 at Seattle.... I watch him rarely but I can identify with much of what he says. So which America will win?? John Edwards said there were two Americas. While the guy's a jerk, he got that part right. I really, really hope those that are proud of America and it's accomplishments (knowing that we can not please the enemies of democracy or those bent on tyranny) will continue to stand up to those in politics who want to make us "like other nations". While flawed...we're still the beacon.

POPSOops, He Did It Again: John Edwards Continues His Epic Fall From Grace This should be a lesson to everyone in Washington. Admit your role and your party's role in the corruption that is all around you. People are tired of being lied to and bill's being written by special interests that are shoved down our throats. Get rid of the deep seeded corruption around you and maybe the American people will actually re-elect you. Otherwise, it doesn't look too good for any incumbent. Now that the average American is paying attention, it will take more than sound bytes and large campaign funds. More than ever, accountability and integrity are required. It's time to come clean with the American People you are supposed to represent. Stepping down off my soap box now.

POPSOdds of conception
I saw this posted on Slate, and just want to make a comment about the math. The "extraordinary odds" of a 43-year-old conceiving naturally are only 1-3 (or maybe 5)% in a given month, says the article. Question: what are the odds in two months? This is just a basic probability question. What are the odds of not getting pregnant two months in a row? Say there's a 5 percent chance of getting pregnant, there's a 95% chance of not getting pregnant. The odds of not getting pregnant for two months are thus (.95*.95=.9025). So there's a .05 chance in one month but a .0975 chance of pregnancy in two months. For three months it's (.95*.95*.95=.857). For a three month affair, that'd be a 14.43% chance of pregnancy. Still unlikely but not really extraordinary. Say an affair lasts for 16 months, from February 2006 to May 2007 perhaps. At 3 percent per month, the math works to a 41% chance of getting pregnant. At 5% it's a 59% chance of pregnancy. "Extraordinary odds"? The math says not
