With rising gas costs, Americans in a variety of polls have shown by a majority they now want to explore offshore drilling, so this move will be popular among that majority and John McCain has been pushing for it as well. Reported on June 26, 2008, the InsiderAdvantage/Poll, asks "Do you favor or oppose increased exploration and production of oil and natural gas off the coasts of Florida?” Favor (61%) Oppose (32%) No opinion (7%) Rasmussen- June 17, 2008: "67% Support Offshore Drilling, 64% Expect it Will Lower Prices." Zogby- June 26, 2008: "74 percent support offshore oil drilling in U.S."

Ich Bin Ein Beginner....er,.....Berliner
merrie
by merrie  Yesterday 5:36 AM
German leader casts doubt over Obama's grand Berlin entrance "It is unusual to do electioneering abroad," spokesman Thomas Steg said. "It is unusual to hold election rallies abroad. No German candidate for high office would even think of using the National Mall (in Washington) or Red Square in Moscow for a rally because it would not be seen as appropriate." Speaking from Japan, where Mrs Merkel is taking part in the G8 meeting, Mr Steg said it was up to Senator Obama to decide what was "in good taste" but added that the Chancellor found the idea "a bit odd".

World 1st: Wave-powered Boat Completes Journey from Japan to Hawaii
papananook
by papananook  7-18-2008    2
This guy is my hero! Horie told reporters in Japan: "The sea was so calm, and the weather was so great throughout my journey. That's why it took me so long," Kenichi Horie said of his historic voyage. The vitals are that Kenichi left Honolulu March 16th, arrived in Wakayama, Japan last night (which by our calculation makes 110 days), and covered over 3,400 nautical miles via wave power. "When waves were weak, the boat slowed down. That's the problem to be solved." !n 1996 Ken-ichi Horie has already set a world record for the fastest crossing of the Pacific Ocean in a solar-powered boat, preceded three years earlier when he pedaled a boat for 4,660 miles from Hawaii to Okinawa, setting the world record for the longest distance traveled by a pedal-powered boat.  The author of Weirdomatic.com may think they are weird but I LOVE THEM! OK, all but the Coffins in Japan. I read too many cyberpunk novels in the 80s! The Mayan Pyramid is only in the planning stages but it is due to open in 2010... My favorite without a doubt is the Beckham Canyon Cavern Hotel...

Obama Now Supports The Bush Policy?...And How 'Bout The Worshipping Media
merrie
by merrie  7-18-2008    1
The press isn’t just acting like Obama is already president - they’re exceeding the sort of international coverage they have given the sitting president, who could barely buy a headline while in Africa and whose recent trip to Japan - which occurred during his birthday - went widely unnoted. But that’s the honest, balanced, unbiased mediating intelligence” of the modern day mainstream media. You do realize, don’t you, that if a GOP candidate with weak foreign policy was doing the same thing - making a “world tour” with dramatic backdrops - the press would be sneering about how the whole thing is a “stunt” meant to “deflect his inexperience.” I know you know it, but I had to say it, anyway. But hey, no bias here.

Water-fuel car unveiled in Japan
WomanInTheMoon11
by WomanInTheMoon11  7-18-2008
Japanese company Genepax presents its eco-friendly car that runs on nothing but water. The car has an energy generator that extracts hydrogen from water that is poured into the car's tank. The generator then releases electrons that produce electric power to run the car. Genepax, the company that invented the technology, aims to collaborate with Japanese manufacturers to mass produce it.

USA's Unhealthy Health Care Rating
sahara
by sahara  7-17-2008
**Up to 100,000 fewer people would die from causes that could have been prevented by good health care if the US achieved the lower mortality rates of leading countries **Thirty-seven million more adults would have an accessible primary care provider, and 70 million more adults would receive all recommended preventive care **The Medicare program could potentially save at least $12 billion a year by reducing hospital readmissions or by reducing hospitalizations for preventable conditions. **Reducing health insurance administrative costs to the average level of countries with mixed private/public insurance systems (Germany, Netherlands, and Switzerland) would free up $51 billion annually, or more than half the cost of providing comprehensive coverage to all the uninsured in the US. Reaching the lowest rate benchmarks (2 to 3 % of national health expenditures spent on adm. costs) set by the lowest countries Finland, Japan, and Australia—could save an estimated $102 billion per yea

US Slips Down Development Index
sahara
by sahara  7-17-2008
Among other findings: * Of the world's richest nations, the US has the most children (15%) living in poverty * Of the OECD nations, the US has the most people in prison - as a percentage and in absolute numbers * 25% of 15-year-old students performed at or below the lowest level in an international maths test - worse than Canada, France, Germany and Japan * If the US infant mortality rate were equal to first-ranked Sweden, more than 20,000 babies would survive beyond their first year of life It also provides a snapshot of the inequalities between the richest and the poorest Americans and between different ethnic groups. "The Measure of America reveals huge gaps among some groups in our country to access opportunity and reach their potential," said the report's author, Sarah Burd-Sharps. "Some Americans are living anywhere from 30 to 50 years behind others when it comes to issues we all care about: health, education and standard of living.
