Ross Perot Jr Haggling to Finish Off the Rhino He Shot That Got Away
celestialdancer
by celestialdancer  11-8-2009
"White rhino (Ceratotherum simum) are considered a conservation-dependent species and are classified as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Intense efforts have increased the population from fewer than 100 in 1895 to approximately 17,500 today. Supporters of trophy hunting claim it is a viable method for “managing” the white rhino population. The practice also brings in tourism dollars and helps fund conservation efforts. Many others oppose the notion of trophy hunting, pointing out that killing an animal to get a thrill - and acquire a stuffed head for one’s wall - is not an acceptable “sport”." Apparently his son Hill Perot got his trophy, "white rhino head".

by celestialdancer  11-8-2009    1
"Andrew Hearn and Joanna Ross, researchers from the United Kingdom’s Global Canopy Programme’s Bornean Wild Cat & Clouded Leopard Project, have been surveying five species of wild cats of Borneo for several years. Their work has uncovered some remarkable findings. Besides capturing the world’s first ever video of the rare cat, the two are also credited for snapping the first photograph of a live bay cat. Based in the Tabin Wildlife Reserve in Sabah, camera trapping and radio-tracking methods are utilized in their research. The program also provides educational materials, community surveys and training courses as well. " (from the article)

 E. O. Wilson says we must do more than save the plants and animals. 99% of earth's organisms are tiny but extremely important in the functioning of all the larger organisms. If we don't save the minute, we lose it all.

Pew Brings Survivors to Congress to Advocate Protections for Sharks
merrie
by merrie  7-15-2009    1
This wasteful practice is banned in the U.S., but loopholes in the law hamper its effectiveness, and many other countries still allow finning. "You are more likely to be killed by lightning than a shark. Up to 73 million sharks are killed around the world annually. In contrast, only a handful of people die every year from the 50-70 shark attacks worldwide." A recent report from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classified 35 out of 64 known pelagic (open ocean) shark and related ray species around the world as Threatened or Near Threatened with extinction. According to the report, overfishing is the primary reason for the threatened status of a number of shark species in U.S. waters, including great whites, three species of thresher sharks, makos, porbeagles, oceanic whitetips, and three species of hammerheads. In advocating for the Shark Conservation Act, introduced by Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) in April and passed by the House of Representatives

The newest report also includes assessments of 845 species of corals. Already more than a quarter are considered threatened, with climate change added to the list of threats they face. Still, IUCN cautions that the health of marine life could be worse than expected, as relatively little is known about biodiversity in the oceans. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIJHaQ8EGn0

Most widely spread sea turtles (Pacific, Indian, Atlantic oceans). Deepest diving sea turtle (1.2km & counting). Warmer weather hatches more females. Swim for thousands of miles for jellyfish they prey on.
