POPSBack to the lunar future? When US astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts first met in the space back in 70th it was great relief from permanent terror of nuclear war and giant leap toward the end of insane arm race. Now we have permanent ISS as assurance of global peace. Besides all science. Sure, we still have a lot to do on Earth, stopping wars and disparity of nations first of all, but that JFK's space decision was crucial in following peaceful defeat of Evil. Space exploration, as any exploration if fact, is great engine for overall human progress and establishment of global justice and peace.

POPS[Astronomy Ireland] U2, Talking Live With ISS Astronauts From Astronomy Ireland: At the opening concert of their world tour on June 30, U2 had a very special surprise for concert goers in Barcelona. After the 4th song of the show, a live satellite link with the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS), appeared on the screens in the stadium, with one of the astronauts telling the audience "right now the most beautiful sight in our cosmos is the blue planet Earth". ISS will be visible in Irish skies again from July 6 - 23.

POPSSpace Station Room With a View The crew of the International Space Station (ISS) is about to get a new "eye-pod." The Tranquility node headed for the space station early in 2010 will feature a viewing dome unlike any other window ever flown in space. The dome, called the Cupola, is literally studded with windows for observing Earth, space, and the marvelous expanse of the ISS itself.

POPSVolcano Could Create Dramatic Sunsets On June 22nd, photographer Brian Whittaker was flying 35,000 feet above Nunavut, Canada, when he witnessed "the most spectacular sunset that I have ever seen," he says. "The giant volcanic cloud from Russia's Sarychev Peak was illuminated by the arctic sun--and this completely transformed the landscape. For a moment, I thought I was on Mars." "All the curtains were drawn so that people could sleep which is very normal," notes Whittaker. "It is possible that very few people have seen this despite all the potential observers!" Whittaker's airplane traveled all the way from British Columbia to Europe, so he got a good long look at the cloud. "It stretched for more than 4000 kilometers.

POPSISS To Be Scrapped By 2015 I had no idea this thing would be shutdown this early....I can bet this will be the last major effort in our lifetimes. With Obama probably dismissing our efforts for a moon shot, we are going to be stuck on the ground at the mercy of Russia and China. Just like after Apollo, we had to wait years before we went back into space with the Shuttle...

POPSSpace Station Flare Captured On Film Of course, this isn’t a wooden ocean-going ship, it’s the space station, in orbit. And the video was taken with a modern digital camera through a 16-inch Dobsonian telescope by a highly skilled amateur astronomer called Nicolas Biver from Versailles, France. The reason why the station appears to “turn” is because the perspective of the observer changes as the station flies overhead, he did a great job of tracking it.

POPSBBC: "'Toilet row' lowers space morale" Russian commander Before he lifted off to join the ISS crew on Thursday, Mr Padalka had asked whether he could use a US gym to stay fit. "They told me: 'Yes, you can.' Then they said no," Novaya Gazeta quoted him as saying. "Then they hold consultations and they approve it again. And now, right before the flight, it turns out again that the answer is negative." Worse still, the regulations now required US and Russian cosmonauts to eat their own rations, he added. "They also recommend us to only use national toilets," the newspaper quoted him as saying. "Cosmonauts are above the ongoing squabble, no matter what officials decide,"
