His former imam from the Falls Church, Virginia mosque where he once worshipped has said so, and indeed has said that, as a Muslim, Major Hasan could do nothing else other than what he did. Note this phrase from the title: “US Terrorist Army Base.” Major Hasan is a psychiatrist, so he should know that projection–literally, “throwing off on the other person”–is one of the most common defenses that people employ when they think, or especially do, things of which they should, at the very least, be ashamed. But the most damning piece of evidence was Hasan’s infamous “Grand Rounds” that he delivered back in 2007 while at Walter Reed Hospital, titled “The Koranic World View As It Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military.” In that presentation, which any reader can view in its entirety at the above link, Hasan repeatedly cited and often quoted surah and ayah (i.e., chapter and verse) from the Koran to justify some very forthright, even brazen commentary on the relationships

POPSCBS and NBC Skip Hasan's Ominous 'We Love Death More Than You Love Life' Brian Ross reported: The Washington Post reported today that Hasan presented this PowerPoint presentation at Walter Reed hospital in 2007, saying: “It's getting harder and harder for Muslims in the service to morally justify being in a military that seems constantly engaged against fellow Muslims.” Under comments, he wrote: “We love death more than you love life.” And his conclusion was that Muslim soldiers be given the option of being released from the military, as conscientious objectors, to decrease what he called “adverse events.” Bob Orr, on the CBS Evening News: There were reasons to worry. Hasan received poor performance reviews at Walter Reed, frequently criticized the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and in June, 2007, Hasan gave a shocking presentation to colleagues. Using slides, Hasan argued forcing Muslim soldiers to fight wars in Muslim countries puts them “at risk to hurting/killing believers unjustly” and he ominously warned of “adverse events." .....

POPSNidal Hasan Terrorist Threat 'Not That Big a Deal'....Matthew Yglesias I think a pretty good case can be made that this kind of situation actually is the main face of the terrorist threat. Not a big well-thought-out plot centrally directed from a “safe haven” in South Asia and undertaken by brilliant covert operatives, but the desperate violent act of a clearly disturbed individual. It’s going to be very hard to prevent this sort of thing. As long as the United States remains a country in which firearms are widely available"for the foreseeable future, in other words"we’re going to be unusually vulnerable to mentally ill spree killers of various kinds, including spree killers who nod in the direction of Islamist thinking. But the larger point is that while these incidents are serious crimes and major tragedies for the victims, they hardly rise to the level of a major macro-level social crisis. They’re certainly not a first-order national security threat. And even put in the lower-stakes context of violent crime in America

POPSNidal Hasan Bought A Para-Military Automatic Pistol With Armor-Piercing Capabilities The FBI dispatched agents from Austin, San Antonio and Waco to the scene, and pressed into service a 15-member forensic unit to help military police collect evidence. Agents from the bureau's Washington field office interviewed relatives, neighbors and friends who knew Hasan during his years in the Washington area. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also are on hand to help with weapons analysis. Investigators also focused on Guns Galore, a firearms store just down the highway from the mosque. Store owner David Cheadle said federal agents interviewed him about the sale of a FN Herstal Five-Seven pistol that was used in the shootings. "It is a popular choice for personal defense," Cheadle said, pulling one from his case, "but it's expensive" -- more than $1,100 at his store. POPSFt. Hood Shooting, 'This is a Domestic Terrorist Attack' Gen. Barry McCafferty (CNN) -- An owner of a 7-Eleven convenience store in Fort Hood, Texas, said Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan came in for coffee and hashbrowns most mornings, including the morning he allegedly shot dozens of soldiers. Surveillance video from the store obtained by CNN shows a man who, according to the store owner, is Hasan at the cashier's counter at about 6:20 a.m. Thursday (7:20 a.m. ET) -- about seven hours before the mass shooting -- carrying a beverage and dressed in traditional Arab garb.
