POPSIraqis Terrorised by Child Kidnaps The authorities say they cannot provide figures for exactly how many kidnappings have taken place since the beginning of the year, but some estimates suggest the number could be as high as one per day. Brig Gen Faisal Mohsin, a senior police commander in Baghdad, told the BBC he believed at least some of the ransom money was funding insurgent activity. "Iraqi forces have become more professional now, and they are on high alert," he said, "pursuing all kinds of crime, and cutting off the sources that fund terrorism. So some of the terrorists have started financing their activities by kidnapping children." The situation has become so acute in Baghdad that the ministry of education has instructed schools to take special precautions.

POPSAl Qaeda Takes Credit for Last Week's Baghdad Bombings Since the attack, Maliki has ordered the concrete blast walls to be put back up around sensitive sites, and the military has arrested 11 officers for negligence or aiding in the attack. The Iraqi government has accused both al Qaeda in Iraq and former Ba'athists operating from Syria of conducting the attack. On Aug. 23, state-run television aired the confession of a senior member of the Ba'ath party who is accused of masterminding the attacks. The suspect claimed he was a former policeman in Miqdadiyah in eastern Diyala province, a region that has served as a bastion for al Qaeda in Iraq. He said the attackers paid $10,000 in bribes to ensure that their trucks would pass through checkpoints into Baghdad. The attack was ordered by a senior Ba'ath official based in Syria. Today, the Iraqi government asked Syria to turn over senior Ba'athists Sattam Farhan and Mohammad Younis al Ahmed for their involvement in last week's bombings.

POPSU.N. Asks for Investigation of U.S. Mercenaries The use of so-called "private security contractors," -- i.e. mercenaries by the USA for extraordinary rendition (and torture) is now a U.N. issue. Such private armies, btw, are a real and very dnagerous sign of growing fascism. The founder of Blackwater, one of the largest, has just been implicated in court of murder, murder of some folks who were going to expose some of Blackwater's war crimes. Blackwater, btw, was forbidden to be in Iraq anymore...so they changed their name and now do their thing in Afghanistan. It's all sick and ugly. If you count the mercenaries the USA actually has about TWICE as many forces in Iraq, 300,000 or more. Plus, since they are not "official army," it's easier for them to get away with murder...being beyond direct military or Iraqi control.

POPSU.S. frees 5 Iranian diplomats held since 2007 Two and a half years in prison without any charges being filed, without any evidence being presented, without any rights to a lawyer, no chance to defend yourself from accusations, all contact with family, friends, your own government or agencies like the Red Cross cut off No clearing of their name. This is classic injustice, another example of USA hypocrisy and cruelty, phony face and double-standards. Why all the concern on the media about Iranian election results and almost zero coverage about USA violations of its own principles? The answer, of course, is strong forces of neocon conservatives, warmongering Republicans and Zionist extremist are once against pushing for war against Iran.

POPSNational Sovereignty Day For such a historic day, the scribblers seem to be ignoring a lot of history. It’s like no one wants to talk about it anymore. Too bad. A great accomplishment, at tremendous sacrifice by both Americans, Iraqis and their British, Australian, European and Asian allies. Congratulations, Iraq. All yours now. Until and unless you need a little more help. Hopefully we’ll have an American president who is willing to help.

POPSBye, Bye Babylon Looking back over six years of good intentions, tragic errors, generosity, arrogance, partisan vituperation, painful deaths and ultimate vindication, two things strike me: the ever-resisted lesson that human affairs are more complex than academic theories claim, and the simple truth that most human beings prefer a measure of freedom to immeasurable repression. Now the symbolism of our troops withdrawing from Iraq's cities is richer than Washington grasps. Mesopotamia created urban culture: Ur, Babylon, Nineveh and countless lesser-known sites are where humans first worked out ways to live together in close quarters in large numbers. The coming wave of terror will strike cities that make Baghdad seem a youngster. The "cradle of civilization" is rising from the grave again. Yes, sectarianism, old grievances and the greed for power may deliver future crises -- even an eventual civil war.

POPSScarlet Pimpernel of Iraq: Dead and Alive, AGAIN?! Fools rush in where angels fear to thread! With all the LIES that the Bushites willingly accepted, would they never learn and hold their judgement. Wishing does NOT make it true, even if you believe that god is on your side. Just remember that George also spoke with god, or vice versa, but he was always wrong. Is this guy alive? Who care. Does he exist might be the question? "In July 2007 a US military spokesman said Baghdadi was a fictional character designed to put an Iraqi face on a terror group" Maybe this time they are right. God knows they created enough boogiemen to know. What's the point of the clip then? Don't rush to judgement, especially when your judgement is totally suspect based on your past clips!!!

POPSIraq insists on US leaving cities by June 30 Iraq's government Monday ruled out allowing U.S. combat troops to remain in Iraqi cities after the June 30 deadline for their withdrawal, despite concern that Iraqi forces cannot cope with the security challenge following a resurgence of bombings in recent weeks.

POPS Dahr Jamail: And So It Goes Meanwhile, violence most likely related to the growing battle between government forces and the Sahwa, who are stepping up attacks against government and US forces, continues. In the last three days, clashes erupted at a police checkpoint in Fallujah, three men were killed while planting an improvised explosive device (IED) in Khanaqin, three Sahwa fighters were arrested north of Babel while planting an IED, an IED targeting Sahwa members in Udhaim killed three members and wounded three others, gunmen killed a member of the Sahwa in Mussayab, a car bomb was defused in Fallujah and two Sahwa members were wounded in a blast in Iskandariya. And, by the way, at least five US soldiers have been killed in the last five days.

POPS Taliban's "Suicide Nurseries" ~ Hundreds Brainwashed Ghazi moved to the neighbouring district of Tank in the North West Frontier Province (NWFP), to save his second teenage son from the influence of his fellow tribesman and local warlord Baitullah Mehsud, who he blames for Haneef’s recruitment and death. But hundreds more children are still undergoing brainwashing at dozens of ‘suicide nurseries’ run by the ethnic Pashtun Taliban commander. Mehsud, in his 30s, has emerged as the most dangerous Taliban commander in Pakistan in recent years. He heads Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, an umbrella group for around a dozen Taliban outfits and has close links with Al Qaeda. The notorious commander is believed to have been behind several dozen suicide bombings across the country, including the one that killed former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in late 2007.

POPSDEJA VU Once again America screws it up. Before we all know it there will be another civil war in Iraq. Both sides are American allies armed and trained by US forces. It is almost like a bad Hollywood comedy. The US forces occupy a country and then don't know what to do, killing and destruction they do know, peace they have no idea.

POPSIraq Is Thriving Despite What the Media Won't Tell You Telephone land line subscribers are also up, from a prewar total of 833,000 to 1.3 million today, according to statistics collected by the Associated Press. The number of Iraqis who have access to drinkable water and to sewerage has nearly doubled. Where households once had to make do with four to eight hours of electricity a day, the national average is over 14 hours a day. The Internet was virtually unknown in the Saddam Hussein era. Only an estimated 4,500 Iraqi users existed in 2003, according to the Brookings Institution. But that soared to 230,000 in January 2007 and to 688,410 in the most recent figures. Casualties among Iraqi civilians and security forces last month dropped to their second-lowest level in nearly four years with 283 deaths linked to war-related violence. The deadliest month for Iraqi civilians and security forces, according to the AP count, was December 2006 with 2,309 killed. posted by Gateway Pundit

POPSIraq: Good News is No News He points out that this was a real setback for Iran and it's influence there. I hope he is correct. And I hope that Pres. Obama does nothing (as Krauthammer adds) to undermine or reverse the progress that has been made there. Iraq can be a strategic ally and an economic boom-country in the region providing prosperity for its citizens and the world.

POPSPlea by Blackwater Guard Helps Indict Others Echoing the findings of previous investigations by Iraqi and US authorities, prosecutors said that they found no evidence that any of the Iraqis killed posed a threat to the guards. Instead, prosecutors accused the guards of acting with blatant disregard for human life and the rule of law. “We honor the brave service of the many US contractors who are employed to support the mission of our armed forces in extremely difficult circumstances,” said Jeffrey A. Taylor, the US attorney for the District of Columbia. “Today, we honor that service by holding accountable the very few individuals who abused that employment by committing some very serious crimes against dozens of innocent civilians.” According to indictments, the Blackwater guards disobeyed orders by leaving their base to respond to reports of a car bomb. Upon arriving at Nisour Square, the guards moved into the circle against the flow of traffic and, without warning, began firing.

POPSShoe-Thrower was Reacting to US Aerial Bombings In related news, al-Zaidi has apparently been abused by Iraqi forces while under arrest, suffering "a broken arm and ribs," along with internal bleeding. Yeah, George. Iraq's a real goddam paradise now. You must be so proud.
