POPSParents Legally Abandon Their Children My initial reaction to this story was repulsion, first towards the parents for giving up all rights to their children. Fortunately they didn't just walk away and leave the children to fend for themselves. Secondly, the article states the original intention of the Safe Haven Law was to "protect newborn children, if a parent is overwhelmed." If this was the case, then why didn't lawmakers write the law to state exactly this? Lawmakers need to be held responsible for the way in which they write laws. When we elect officials to write laws we assume they are articulate enough and educated enough to actually write laws that spell out exactly what is intended instead of leaving it open to other interpretations. Now these children have become an additional burden on taxpayers and the parents are free to continue their irresponsible procreation which will produce even more of a drain on society. These people need to have vasectomies and tubal ligation.

POPSHow Fannie and Freddie Lost Their Groove If that bill had become law, then the world today would be different. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, a blizzard of terrible mortgage paper fluttered out of the Fannie and Freddie clouds, burying many of our oldest and most venerable institutions. But the bill didn't become law, for a simple reason: Democrats opposed it. Republicans, tied by Democratic opposition, couldn't even get the Senate to vote on the matter. That such a reckless political stand could have been taken by the Democrats was obscene even then. Wallison wrote at the time: ``It is a classic case of socializing the risk while privatizing the profit. The Democrats and the few Republicans who oppose portfolio limitations could not possibly do so if their constituents understood what they were doing.' Congressman Richard Baker (R-La.) has been concerned about the risks created by Fannie and Freddie since 2000, when he first introduced legislation to augment the powers of their regulator...

POPSNeurolinguistic Sorcery in the Media
Some responses: NLP is not occult paranoia Submitted by Bubblefish on Thu, 09/11/2008 - 11:47. I have some very serious reservations about some, but not all, of these accusations. One, I absolutely agree with the over arching theme, which is the bullying and manipulative linguistic tactics used by many in the media, and Sean Hannity most definitely. He's probably the worst in the mainstream and personally, I really detest the guy for that. We can agree there is extreme manipulation here and these manipulations can be modeled by lingistics, NLP or otherwise. However, the interpretation of the 666 as sorcery and the insertion of a 'magical war' I don't think is warranted by the evidence given, nor is the ok symbol argument convincing to imply such a reality. Sure, we can find dual meaning in communication, but's it more than just 'dual'. It's multilayered and potentially there are numerous interpretations of reality, all of which can used mutually shared language. The ok

POPSNonviolent Communication (NVC) The goal of NVC is to get one's own needs met while also meeting others' needs. A key principle of nonviolent communication that supports this is the capacity to express oneself without use of good/bad, right/wrong judgment, hence the emphasis on expressing feelings and needs, instead of criticisms or judgments.

POPSDo subatomic particles have free will? But physicists all the way back to Einstein have been unhappy with this idea. Einstein famously grumped, “God does not play dice.” And indeed, ever since the birth of quantum mechanics, some physicists have offered alternate interpretations of its equations that aim to get rid of this indeterminism. The most famous alternative is attributed to the physicist David Bohm, who argued in the 1950s that the behavior of subatomic particles is entirely determined by “hidden variables” that cannot be observed. Conway and Kochen say this search is hopeless, and they claim to have proven that indeterminacy is inherent in the world itself, rather than just in quantum theory. And to Bohmians and other like-minded physicists, the pair says: Give up determinism, or give up free will. Even the tiniest bit of free will.

POPSCulture versus Biology: the Darwin Legacy This is a very good article, succinctly describing the ideological structures underlying the uses and interpretations of science; also on the humanities-sciences dichotomies. I have highlighted a short section as there is a contemporary championing of technological innovations especially in neuroscience towards a utopian future eugenically designed to eliminate the 'inferior' : such dangerous rhetoric is severed from all human values, history and ideology.

POPSJury Nullification Nullified Young tried to assure the jury that the federal drug laws are constitutional because the Supreme Court has interpreted the commerce clause quite expansively. I'm glad someone is questioning the expansive interpretations some on the bench have about the constitution.

POPSPope Reasserts Catholic Supremacy Over Protestants His Unholiness reasserts the pre-Reformation, tyrannical and usurping tradition of Papal authority and Roman Catholic supremacy as if Jesus Christ himself taught or authorized his ceremonial priest-craft and Latin Mass ( which is idolatry ), where his Blasphemy, through waving his magic wand and reciting Latin formula ( hocus pocus ) is able to (if you believe this) transform (transubstantiation) mere wafers of bread ("heil presto"--poof!) into the "body of Christ"! Jesus and the apostles never taught such superstition (which hails from Roman paganism, mixed well in its holidays and ecclesiastical hierarchy). The Pope is following the false teaching of Simon Magus, the sorcerer, instead of Simon Peter the apostle. Ritual, ceremony, miters, crosses, candles, pilgrimages, liturgies, and shepherd staffs all make a show of religion (tracing back to Babylonian religions) contrary to the writings of the new testament.

POPSBrian Dettmer: Book Autopsies Finding this site was sheer chance. I tried to get as much of his artwork from the two main sites as I could and I think we have a very nice presentation of his work. More personal details of the artist and how he does such beautiful work are at the end of the clip... Enjoy. I did.

POPSStem Cells 2.0: Scientists Make Revolutionary Advance First paragraph. A while back scientists were making revolutionary breakthroughs in stem cell research. Unfortunately they fell foul of interpretations of thousand year old texts in foreign languages, and a government with the scientific understanding of a squashed grape said "Sorry, our kind and loving God requires that people continue to suffer from Parkinson's, anemia, and various other horrible ailments." Luckily, scientists are awesome and did the obvious thing - make ANOTHER revolutionary breakthrough to get around the problem.

POPSIsn't that Ironic?
Wow, how funny that a conservative Christian leader is chastising Obama saying he's distorting and mis-interpreting the bible. Isn't that what these conservative, radical Christian leaders do everyday? They treat some passages in the bible as law directly from god, and others as not being applicable in today's world. They also translate the original language of the bible differently to represent the views they want to present in the time. Translating some words to mean one thing, even though historically they may have meant something else. Again, it's fine if you want to believe your religious views - no problem with that. But when you start trying to use the law to enforce your rules on people who don't hold your same beliefs, that's where I have issues. I think Obama made a great point with his statements. And by the way for Mr Dobson - Jesus didn't discourage slavery in the New Testament, and actually referenced it several times. Or is that one of those passages you s
