I've argued for a long time that evil isn't some aberrant individual, that evil is common and everyday and exists within all of us. We'd like to believe that somehow evil is the boogeyman under the bed -- but in reality -- there is a mirror there and we are only seeing ourselves. Normal, every day people commit acts of evil. If we're lucky, we'll either have enough power or enough same-minded individuals to justify to ourselves that we're doing the right thing. We might even convince ourselves that we're saving the world. In groups, we are blind. We chatter along, secure in the belief that our views reflect the general population - we are belligerent and even cruel in our commentaries. Many responses on various internet sites are an excellent example. But such cruelty is the root of the "evil" mentality, we can say or do whatever we like because we feel it is our right regardless of the damage we do and have done.
