Islamic Supremacist Group Holds First U.S. Conference

director of the Future of Terrorism Project at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies, told FOXNews.com. Phares said that Hizb ut-Tahrir, rather than training members to carry out terrorist acts like Al Qaeda, focuses instead on indoctrinating youths between ages of 9 and 18 to absorb the ideology that calls for the formation of an empire " or "khilafah" " that will rule according to Islamic law and condones any means to achieve it, including militant jihad. Hizb ut-Tahrir often says that its indoctrination "prepares the infantry" that groups like Al Qaeda take into battle, Phares said. "It's like a middle school that prepares them to be recruited by the high school, which is Al Qaeda," he said. "One would compare them to Hitler youth. ... It's an extremely dangerous organization." Phares said Hizb ut-Tahrir has strongholds in Western countries, including Britain, France and Spain, and clearly is looking to strengthen its base in the U.S.

Please ask Berlusconi to keep his promise and help Africa fight hunger
brightlight4
by brightlight4  7-6-2009
On Wednesday, Italian Prime Minister Berlusconi is hosting the G8 and other world leaders in l'Aquila, Italy. Although some countries are showing leadership, the G8 as a whole are behind on their promises, and Mr. Berlusconi is easily the worst of the group. He has no credibility to lead this meeting. To date, has delivered only 3% of his 2005 promise to Africa. While other countries are making aid increases in an effort to keep their word, he has cut aid. To some of us this is just par for the course, but to some it could mean the difference between life or death. With this summit, he has a last chance to earn back some of his credibility. Prime Minister Berlusconi must act decisively in the next three days to start turning his miserable failure on development into something we can take seriously. He must restore the aid cut, find additional money for agriculture as he has promised, and budget for a serious plan to get back on track for delivering the commitment he made at the

BBC: "'Reduction' seen in abuse sites"
ratcatcher2
by ratcatcher2  4-30-2009
"These websites, although reducing in number, represent an extremely serious problem," said Peter Robbins, chief executive of the IWF. In its report, the IWF said: "1,536 domains represent a problem of a scale which can be seriously targeted and significantly disrupted through international efforts." It said that about 69% of the children depicted in the images it saw were between zero and 10. About 24% involved children aged six or under. About 58% of the images seen showed the most serious sorts of abuse - involving rape or torture" ... BBC

"I Know, Let's Cut Missile Defense If . . . Blah,Blah,Blah"
merrie
by merrie  4-5-2009    6
Iran would face “isolation, international pressure, and a potential nuclear arms race in the region that will increase insecurity for all.” And Obama said he would continue to pursue a missile-defense system in Europe as long as the Iranian nuclear threat existed – but suggested he would abandon it if Iran abandoned its nuclear pursuits. Though there is bipartisan support for many of the steps, Obama may face resistance from Republicans in the Senate on ratification of the Test Ban Treaty and other moves. Speaking to Iran, the other nation widely thought to be pursuing nuclear weapons, Obama reiterated his campaign pledge to engage the Tehran regime, winning applause for saying, “We believe in dialogue.” In his speech Obama laid out shorter-term steps, like beginning international talks on banning production of fissile material, could revive momentum on international arms control, despite potential resistance from Republicans in Congress.

China Using Olympics As ‘Pretext’ For Crackdown: Amnesty
papananook
by papananook  7-30-2008
“Authorities have used the Olympic Games as a pretext to continue and in some respects, intensify existing policies and practices that have led to serious and widespread violations of human rights,” the report added. It listed a series of recommendations urging China to: * release all prisoners of conscience; * stop police arbitrarily detaining activists and dissenters; * impose a moratorium on the death penalty; * allow complete media freedom; and * account for those killed or detained in Tibet. “It is very disturbing that Chinese authorities have indulged in such a big crackdown on the activists,” Mark Allison, China researcher for Amnesty, told AFP. “These are people who represent many many more people in China.” Officials were also extending the use of punitive administrative detention, notably of activists and petitioners as well as beggars and peddlers, Amnesty said. In January, Beijing police launched a campaign against “illegal activ

Cultural Dubai
sahara
by sahara  7-29-2008
Friday is the holy day in Islam, but it’s the day of drunk partying and sexual debauchery for Westerners. And there is almost no cultural integration between the locals and the foreigners. Compounded by all this is the fact that Dubai is a hereditary monarchy with no parliament. Ordinary people have no way for their voice to be heard except in the streets and mosques were fury is reportedly growing. A terrorist attack could be carried out by a disgruntled local—but not necessarily. Dubai’s high regional profile makes it a likely target for Al Qaeda, which now seems incapable of launching an attack in the West, and who could see Dubai as an easy chance to kill some infidels. Moreover, since Dubai is the Middle East’s cosmopolitan melting pot, and its experiment with Islamic capitalism could become the blueprint for surrounding Arab states, its failure would have dire consequences for the entire region.

U.N. Chief Meets With Ahmadinejad

particularly the demand that it suspend its uranium enrichment. "We expect to hear that the secretary-general told the Iranian president that he was in violation of three Security Council resolutions, that he should comply with international demands to stop enriching uranium, and to stop the crazy talk," a spokesman for the American mission to the United Nations, Richard Grenell, said. Iranian officials increasingly are emphasizing Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's prophecy that Israel will be erased from the map of the region, but the Western response has been muted. The U.N.-affiliated Food and Agriculture Organization is hosting the three-day food conference in Rome, where yesterday Mr. Ahmadinejad blamed the "bullying powers" for creating a food crisis and called for the formation of "an independent and powerful body" that would "justly regulate" food distribution. Mr. Mugabe, who critics say has single-handedly transformed his country from a food exporter into a starving n

Small Claims Court for Countries
ouyangwulong
by ouyangwulong  5-23-2008    1
It's interesting how well the international system works when people aren't busy sabotaging it. Malaysia and Singapore just settled this international dispute in court, and everyone seems happy. I think the main reason that countries such as the US or China don't support international courts and authorities is because they don't want to be held responsible for the transgressions they know they've committed. You have to admit, America has come to demand a certain kind of exceptionalism, placing ourselves above the law by virtue of our own self-aggrandizement. Restoring America's international reputation will begin with ending this repugnant double standard that we hold for ourselves and the rest of the world.

Unpolitical sports? - A memento of the Olympic Games of Berlin, 1936
Rasmus
by Rasmus  4-1-2008
Having rejected a proposed boycott of the 1936 Olympics, the United States and other western democracies missed the opportunity to take a stand that — some observers at the time claimed — might have given Hitler pause and bolstered international resistance to Nazi tyranny. With the conclusion of the Games, Germany's expansionist policies and the persecution of Jews and other “enemies of the state” accelerated, culminating in World War II and the Holocaust.
