Shool Children Threatened By Water Quality Contamination
mavathlete
by mavathlete  9-25-2009
The true quality of municipal water supplies nationwide is coming under continually focused scrutiny. Many so called experts see revision of the entire water treatment systems as the sole solution; costing billions of dollars and years to accomplish. Aqua Star International has a much simpler, cost effective and immediate solution. Contact us for for details at 1-800-688-1858

Gunmen kill 17 people at a drug rehab in Mexico
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  9-3-2009
What an act of insane massacre. And this is just one chapter in a multi-volume murderous campaign. And while the USA is 12,000 miles away burning opium fields in Afghanistan -- (while the opium crop in Turkey is used for medicines) -- this goes on in our backyard and inner cities. If leaders DID learn from history you'd think they should know that the policy of Prohibition (against booze) led to gang wars and murderous violence, out-of-control, non-stoppable. But the Drug Wars are a nice excuse for covert wars or sounding like you're "doing good," -- and a handy way to put lots of citizens in jail, esp. those who are more 'non-conformist." The U.S. has a myth/story of the 'Valentine's Day Massacre.' but this is far worse...yet we continue to rerun our old B&W charade stories while vivid reality is exploding all around. IMO: Legalize it. Tax it. Get out of debt. Use the Afghan opium crop for medicines. Stop the covert drug wars. Free the prisoners. Stop waving our flag f

Have you found your soul place?
Aribeth
by Aribeth  6-25-2009    11
Richard Ford, Pulitzer Prize winning author, was born and raised in Jackson, MS. His wife’s job as a city planner took them to many cities but when they moved to New Orleans, Ford said he had “an instantaneous recognition.”Even now, living in Maine, he considers New Orleans home. Often we are inspired to build monuments on these sacred grounds: pyramids, cities, stone circles, churches, mosques. Whatever caused our ancestors to pilgrimage to these spots, it is still drawing us as well. Perhaps the earthy taste of freshly squeezed olive oil, never before experienced, causes you to feel as one with the rocky landscape of a Greek island. No matter the reason, we are inexplicably attracted to locations and feel a connection that we cannot readily explain. In their special issue on Sacred Places, U.S. News and World Report states that that these spots are “as varied as the human sense of the sacred and as various as the world’s spiritual traditions.”

Military Academies See Surge of Applications During Recession
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  6-16-2009
The Naval Academy has increased outreach efforts in parts of the country that are underrepresented at the school, particularly inner cities. Minorities will make up 35% of the class of 2013 -- the highest in academy history. (I find it interesting that they are focusing on inner city areas and minorities.) Becoming a military grunt for money. Of course, its nothing new, but to sell your soul for the government to put a rifle in your hands and money in your pocket when you wouldn’t do it yesterday just seems sadly hypocritical. People join the military because they believe in that way of life, at least they are honest about it. But please think about what you are really signing up for.

Urban BART riders are subsidizing suburbanites
Lexica
by Lexica  4-3-2009
More: As the system expanded throughout the 80s and 90s, far-flung suburbs received high-intensity transit service far out of proportion to their size and density, and the residents of central cities found themselves subsidizing suburban transportation at an ever-increasing rate. Despite failing to meet ridership projections, a uniquely costly construction type, and decades-long problems with escalators and elevators, BART remains the most politically popular transit service, receiving a share of regional transportation dollars far out of proportion to its ridership. Today, BART’s legacy is an ever-expanding regional development footprint and fantastically wasteful expansion plans that starve the much more efficient and larger bus agencies of needed operating funds. This is not just an issue of priorities, it is an issue of social and environmental justice.

How the city hurts your brain
spirithiker
by spirithiker  1-13-2009
With all the distractions of busy city streets our brains are constantly being redirected to focus on what we need to pay attention to. This constant redirecting takes energy and effort. Natural settings don’t require this same amount of effort. That’s why when we get out into nature we feel like a weight has been lifted off our shoulders and we begin to relax. So, the next time someone tells you to “take a hike”, they are actually looking out for your best interests.

Inside Obama’s Acorn
merrie
by merrie  9-30-2008    2
....with a “1960’s-bred agenda of anti-capitalism” to match. Acorn, says Stern, grew out of “one of the New Left’s silliest and most destructive groups, the National Welfare Rights Organization.” The theory, explains Stern, was that an impossibly overburdened welfare system would force “a radical reconstruction of America’s unjust capitalist economy.” Instead of a socialist utopia, however, we got the culture of dependency and family breakdown that ate away at America’s inner cities — until welfare reform began to turn the tide. he targets and strategy have changed. Acorn prefers to fly under the national radar, organizing locally in liberal urban areas — where, local legislators and reporters are often “slow to grasp how radical Acorn’s positions really are.” In Your Face Just think of Code Pink’s well-known operations (threatening to occupy congressional offices, interrupting the testimony of General David Petraeus) and you’ll get the idea.

ACORN's Radical Anti-Capitalism Agenda
merrie
by merrie  9-30-2008    1
......millions of low-income residents of cities pay excessively high prices for consumer goods in part because of a lack of competition. The report noted that in Chicago "higher priced, small grocery stores" are concentrated in the city's poorer neighborhoods—exactly the kind of place where big-box stores now want to open. Far from rejecting these stores, inner-city residents have embraced them. Thousands of local residents showed up to apply for jobs when Wal-Mart announced it was opening a new store in an abandoned former Macy's outlet in the Baldwin Hills section of Los Angeles. After the store opened in 2003, sales soared at the mall were the Wal-Mart was located and other national retailers moved into the predominantly black neighborhood, vastly improving the range of products offered to residents.

For all the hard work of our good teachers, our system is failing to keep pace with the demands of a new century. Entrepreneurial charter schools such as KIPP, Uncommon Schools, Aspire, the Inner-City Education Foundation, the Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools and Green Dot demonstrate what a single-minded focus on excellence can achieve with low-income students" Try investing in we the people. Bush and Blacks
merrie
by merrie  8-17-2008    1
The message—both in words and action—is clear, consistent, and stirring . This year he joined forces with Washington D.C.’s black Democratic mayor, Anthony Williams, to win passage of the first federally funded voucher program, which will provide $7,500 each to poor minority children in the nation’s capital, giving them some of the same educational options that their wealthier neighbors enjoy. The Bush administration has also tried hard to help lift Africa out of its deepening misery. Last year, the president pledged $15 billion—a twenty-fold increase from Clinton-era funding levels—to help stem the AIDS pandemic sweeping the continent, and he has sent troops and diplomatic envoys to try to quell violence in Liberia and Sudan. African-relief activist Bob Geldof recently acknowledged, “The Bush administration is the most radical—in a positive sense—in its approach to Africa since Kennedy.”

Missing Kids Come in all Colors
dulios
by dulios  8-15-2008    5
Everything from runaway brides to vacationing coeds to murdered military moms to snatched up toddlers and housewives. Be they rich, poor, rural, suburban or city, missing white women and white teens are valued. They are cherished. When violence befalls them it is “news”. It is a surprise that it happened to them—where they live. Theirs are the tragedies that must be covered. They are the victimized who must be championed. Their families are the ones deserving of justice and closure. Their families cannot be left to cope alone. They are the lost that must be found. Nancy Grace doesn’t have an aneurysm on camera when LaToya goes missing. Dan Abrams doesn’t get outraged when Marcus or Jamar vanishes. Katie Couric and Barabara Walters don’t break down in tears when kids from South Central are murdered.

Jane Jacobs - Urban planning hero
egsnyder
by egsnyder  5-4-2008    2
Jacobs had no professional training in the field of city planning, nor did she hold the title of planner. She instead relied on her observations and common sense to illustrate why certain places work, and what can be done to improve those that do not. Together with William H. Whyte, Jacobs led the way in advocating for a place-based, community-centered approach to urban planning, decades before such approaches were considered sensible.
