Sure, the last Beer Summit was an empty political gesture, something Obama was forced into after he stepped in it.* This one could actually be meaningful, if everyone behaves, sincerely tries to become a better person … which is asking a lot, I know. Likelihood of it happening? Zip. But maybe the White House Press Corps, which initiated the last Beer Summit, could try to prompt this one. By asking the president about it, like they did last time. Checking Google news, not seeing that has happened. * Boston Herald, take a bow. Fired the twin rockets of Sgt. Crowley’s distinctly unracist past and his position as a police academy racial profiling instructor that blew up that race thing in Gates’ and Obama’s faces. I remember watching Gates on CNN that afternoon, and the president at his press conference that night, thinking, “Have a good time, guys. Rockets impact in the a.m.” If Skip had just returned our calls …

The only real solution is education and broad experience. It seems to me that God creates individuals one at a time, and it is the human mind that insists on grouping and classifying them. We should resist that temptation.

10 Mediveval Torture Devices
ljsdesign
by ljsdesign  10-9-2009    3
More from the article: Some courts used torture to determine if someone accused of a crime was truly guilty. This torture would take strange forms: Someone's arm would be forced into boiling water, and the verdict would be based on how well the arm healed days later. Other courts simply tortured people to get them to confess to the crime. The courts themselves even recognized, in their twisted way, that a confession given under torture held no legal meaning. Such a confession had to be confirmed by the victims while not being tortured within 24 hours. If they refused, however, they were simply tortured until they confessed again People were often tortured to force religious conversions. They also faced torture because they may have committed heresy against the established church. Thousands were tortured during the Inquisition on the pretext of religious heresy or conversion, although Inquisitors in general were often motivated by more earthly concerns - they took over the estates

I clipped the most intriguing phrases. Go to clip source to read entire message. The closing paragraph: His message seems to be Europe, you still have a chance. Don't go down with the American ship. Happy is whoever learns a lesson from the mistakes committed by others. Modest precautions are better than expensive follow-up care. Returning to truth is better than insisting on falsehood. And peace be upon those who follow the path of righteousness.

Buried at Wounded Knee - Fasting for Leonard
nedhamson1
by nedhamson1  9-18-2009
Leonard who? Leonard Peltier was a mover and shaker in the American Indian Movement. He was THE SCAPEGOAT for a government operation designed to discredit AIM as a quasi-terrorist, criminal group, in the same way they suppressed black consciousness by criminalizing the Black Panthers and killing Huey Newton. Leltier was not killed but has been in prison for years for supposedly shooting and killing an FBI agent with a broken rifle and the lies (now admitted) of someone who was there. What would it feel like to be invisible? Read this and find out.

The Best Reason Ever for Health Care Reform.
thinkingblue
by thinkingblue  9-14-2009    8
Excerpt: (It's a heroic story... How is it possible that Pronovost needed to beg hospitals to adopt an essentially cost-free idea that saved so many lives? Here’s an industry that loudly protests the high cost of liability ins. and the injustice of our tort system and yet needs extensive lobbying to embrace a simple technique to save up to 100,000 people.) An alarming article; in my own experience I can count family and friends who have died or almost died due to hospital irresponsibility and negligence. My father developed the clot that killed him while in a hospital. My mother died of the mastectomy before she could die from the cancer. My father-in-law died after hospital staff yanked out his lung and put him in regular care instead of an ICU. A friend died in child birth because the hospital anaesthesiologist did not realize she was regurgitating and put her under while she was drowning in her own vomit. I wonder, is this sad enough to make the townhallers come to their senses? NO

Africa MPs Cheer Lockerbie Bomber
merrie
by merrie  9-9-2009    2
September 9, 2009 Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi has made his first public appearance since receiving a hero’s welcome on his return to Libya. The BBC’s Rana Jawad, in Tripoli, says a nurse wheeled Megrahi to a small stage in the lecture hall at the city’s medical centre. He appeared to be frail, wearing a surgeon’s mask that covered most of his face and a colourful, sequined traditional skullcap, she says. After he started coughing, he was immediately wheeled off the stage. Our reporter says it seemed a carefully orchestrated event intended to send a signal to the Scottish, British and US governments. Hey, let’s send a few more hundred billion taxpayer dollars to Africa.

Suicide of the West? by Thomas Sowell
merrie
by merrie  9-1-2009    2
the idea of a "war on terror"-- as if that will stop the terrorists' war on us. The ostensible reason for releasing al-Megrahi was compassion for a man terminally ill. It is ironic that this was said in Scotland, for exactly 250 years ago another Scotsman-- Adam Smith-- said, "Mercy to the guilty is cruelty to the innocent." Tragically, those with this strange inversion of values include the Attorney General of the United States, Eric Holder. Although President Obama has said that he does not want to revisit the past, this is only the latest example of how his administration's actions are the direct opposite of his lofty words. It is not just a question of looking backward. The decision to second-guess CIA agents who extracted information to save American lives is even worse when you look forward. This is not simply an injustice to those who have tried to keep this country safe, it is a danger recklessly imposed on future Americans whose safety cannot always be guaranteed

Hastings Court Prevents Defendant from Obeying the Ruling.
CostaDelSolUnmuzzled
by CostaDelSolUnmuzzled  8-23-2009
This raises quite a few questions for the court and the press to research; 1. One could ask whether Hastings Court actually have any jurisdiction over a property placed in Spain? 2. If Hasting Court rules differently to the Spanish court…Which court order takes priority? 3. Why doesn’t DeCotta McKenna & Santafè not want to “waste the courts time” with a hearing? Could it be that the same law firm is more concerned with the fact that the Court in Spain have denied DeCotta, McKenna & Santafè`s Client any costs from 2004 and up till now, than they are about wasting court-time? 4. Could it be that the big law firm and especially Jon Sutton are not really keen on discussing the circumstances that have been going on in Spain and certainly do not want any questions asked about how the company could act on a mistranslated Court Order before it was even translated?

Top 50 USA War Criminals
citizenbfk
by citizenbfk  8-22-2009    12
This is a pretty good list. If you don't know, btw, the idea comes from the USA having a Top 50 (Top 52) list of Iraqi alleged war criminals and putting their faces on a deck of cards (like this article does). Of course, these are just accusations. They should be arrested first, held in secret prisons for a few years, tortured and then maybe...maybe we have a trial for a few of them. That would be Bush League Justice (i.e., injustice). Maybe a few on the list are innocent or dupes...but we should let that get in the way. I note the clip calls not only for activist, U.S. appropriate officials but also for foreign courts and the International Criminal Court to get involved. That would be a good thing to lobby for, esp. for those who live outside the country, could put lobby effort there...because you can't expect a guilty nation to hold guilty people as accountable as they should...it's sort of like expecting a fox to guard the hen house.
