Infectious disease authority (Johns Hopkins) outlines zostavax risks/benefits for HCPs. Specific benefits: *Prevention- vaccine needed to combat future higher incidence in older adults due to decline in natural varicella exposure (via childhood vaccination *Management- prevention of future disease by those already inflicted by zoster virus(i.e. reduction in PNP) Barriers: *Logistical/dispense- vaccine must be thawed 30 minutes to injection *Efficacy rate declines with age (while conversely prevelence of disease increases with age)- but those of higher age still benefit from lowered risk of PNP *Channel not conducive to greatest at-risk population (Medicare= older, lower income); Part 'B' instead of part D.

A New Strain of Flu Many Times More Lethal Than H1N1?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  11-10-2009    15
It is typically behaving like a hemorrhagic fever in the lungs turning them into ‘mush’ and killing the patient. Some reports from the Ukraine are indicating that figures may will be over 1000 deaths, but the numbers are not being released by the government until confirmations are made. Moreover, the virus could have the potential to recombine with those being vaccinated to create a plague that could potentially kill more than 1 million people globally per month. I don't know what to think. .

Should We Trust The Experts?
debbyski
by debbyski  11-4-2009
"None of this suggests the public should abandon a healthy skepticism toward even well-credentialed authorities. Pharmaceutical companies, with colossal missteps like the dangerous medication Vioxx, have earned suspicions about their motivations. Vaccinations foregone put not only those individual children at risk but clear the path for infectious disease to spread more easily. That's not a great outcome, whether we're collectively battling the measles or this season's H1N1 flu. "You can't minimize your individual risk," Wallace writes, "unless your herd, your friends and neighbors, also buy in." Our children most certainly deserve safe vaccines; that's a given. I don't blame people for not trusting special interest groups. I just thought this article brought out some interesting points regarding social media.

Evidence emerges that seasonal flu vaccine increases risk of H1N1 swine flu
The Infowarrior
by The Infowarrior  9-25-2009    2
The story doesn't cite the percentage increase in H1N1 virus risk, but it's apparently enough to give pause to many doctors and infectious disease experts. "We don't know with this year's flu shot how it interacts with the pandemic flu shot, so it's a worry," said Dr. Michael Gardam in the CBC News article quoted below. He's the director of infectious diseases prevention and control at the Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion. The upshot of all this is that Canadian health officials are now scratching their heads, wondering whether the seasonal flu vaccines will actually make the H1N1 pandemic worse! It's fascinating that this data is coming out of Canada, not the U.S. In the United States, the mainstream media has engaged in a virtual blackout of any information that questions the safety of vaccines, even while openly pushing outrageous lies about the swine flu vaccine (http://www.naturalnews.com/027055_s...).

Boston launches flu shot tracking
foxyarse
by foxyarse  9-21-2009    1
Infectious disease specialists in Boston and elsewhere predicted that the registry approach could prove even more useful if something more sinister strikes: a bioterrorism attack or the long-feared arrival of a global flu epidemic. In such crises, the registry could be used to track who received a special vaccine or antidote to a deadly germ. "Anything you can do to better pinpoint who's vaccinated and who's not, that's absolutely vital," said Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy at the University of Minnesota. "I wish more cities were doing this kind of thing." Boston is believed to be the first city to embrace this particular approach to tracking vaccinations against the seasonal flu, estimated to kill 36,000 people each year in the United States, principally the elderly. But when Boston bought the monitoring system from a Milwaukee company in 2006, emergency authorities had a far different use in mind: tracking people injured in

CDC Recommends Against Multi-Dose Vials, But Opts to Use Them for Swine Flu Vaccinations
merrie
by merrie  8-21-2009
"important to use single-dose vials rather than multi-dose vials whenever possible." The third result offered, among other things, state and local vaccination guidance that included the CDC answer to the question, "Will vaccine be in multi-dose vials?" The answer, which appears below, seems to completely contradict the CDC guidance offered in the first two results described above: The majority of vaccine will be in multi-dose vials, the remainder in single dose syringes or nasal sprayers. Confused, I thought about contacting officials at the CDC for an explanation for the contradiction between the agency's guidance and its practice. Then I reconsidered, thinking that would be a colossal waste of time. After all, I've had experience with the CDC before Related Post: Former Top Canadian Doctor Slams ‘ObamaCare’ August 21st, 2009 http://bobmccarty.com/2009/08/21/former-top-canadian-doctor-slams-obamacare/

Refusing Vaccination Labels You a “Criminal”, So Says WHO
merrie
by merrie  8-4-2009    5
Here are ten key points associated with MSEHPA: Under the Model State Emergency Health Powers Act, upon the declaration of a “public health emergency,” governors and public health officials would be empowered to: Force individuals suspected of harboring an “infectious disease” to undergo medical examinations. Track and share an individual’s personal health information, including genetic information. Force persons to be vaccinated, treated, or quarantined for infectious diseases. Mandate that all health care providers report all cases of persons who harbor any illness or health condition that may be caused by an epidemic or an infectious agent and might pose a “substantial risk” to a “significant number of people or cause a long-term disability.” (Note: Neither “substantial risk” nor “significant number” are defined in the draft.) Force pharmacists to report any unusual or any increased prescription rates that may be caused by epidemic disease.

Gonzo Gastronomy: How the Food Industry Has Made Bacon a Weapon of Mass Destruction
brightlight4

Rolling Stone paints a grim picture of what goes on inside a hog CAFO: "Sows are artificially inseminated and fed and delivered of their piglets in cages so small they cannot turn around. Forty fully grown 250-pound male hogs often occupy a pen the size of a tiny apartment. They trample each other to death. There is no sunlight, straw, fresh air or earth. The floors are slatted to allow excrement to fall into a catchment pit under the pens, but many things besides excrement can wind up in the pits: afterbirths, piglets accidentally crushed by their mothers, old batteries, broken bottles of insecticide, antibiotic syringes, stillborn pigs …" Manufacturing Pandemics Factory farms are a hot spot for new infectious diseases. According to a former chief of the Centers for Disease Control's Special Pathogens Branch, "Intensive agricultural methods often mean that a single, genetically homogeneous species is raised in a limited area, creating a perfect target for emerging diseases, whic

Should Unis avoid Freshers gatherings?
PatParslow
by PatParslow  7-23-2009
So, the RCGP don't think so - because if sick people follow the advice, they won't go to the gatherings. But there is a serious flaw in the logic here (as there seems to be with many of the RCGP views which I see on the BBC news site) - in this case it is ignoring the asymptomatic flu sufferers who, although less infectious, are still able to pass the disease on. So they won't know they have it, unless they are psychic, and so the large gatherings would appear to be rather foolish. Coupled with the point that Freshers events "are an important induction into university life" - and the chances are any border line cases will want to enjoy their first week of freedom just like the healthy ones. So - the RCGP advice is, as far as I can see "risk spreading the influenza". Nice one. Fortunately, it does appear to be remaining mild at the moment - let us hope it stays that way.
