Thomas Sowell: Random Thoughts
merrie
by merrie  11-10-2009    1
But what this means is that even the record-breaking federal deficit understates the government's real financial liabilities, because agencies like FDIC and the Federal Housing Authority are likely to need increased amounts of money to keep going. An e-mail from a reader says that liberals like to take the moral high ground, even though their own moral relativism means that there is no moral high ground. I doubt whether the man responsible for the massacre at Fort Hood will pay with his life for the lives that he took. He may well be free again someday. We can only hope that he does not get a hero's welcome when he arrives in some terror-sponsoring country, the way the Lockerbie bomber did. A recent study by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights showed that, after the housing boom and bust, blacks, whites, Hispanics, Asian Americans and American Indians all reduced their subprime mortgage loans. Only politicians seem not to have learned anything from the economic disaster ...

No surprise really. Just more evidence that Obama cares not a twit for our military and is happy to enjoy the perks of being President in name only. Besides, it makes him uncomfortable to be around REAL men and women.

Socialism Kills: The Human Cost of Delayed Economic Reform in India
merrie
by merrie  11-7-2009    1
What would the impact on social indicators have been had India commenced economic reform one decade earlier, and enjoyed correspondingly faster economic growth and improvements in human development indicators? This paper seeks to estimate the number of "missing children," "missing literates," and "missing non-poor" resulting from delayed reform, slower economic growth, and hence, slower improvement of social indicators. It finds that with earlier reform, 14.5 million more children would have survived, 261 million more Indians would have become literate, and 109 million more people would have risen above the poverty line. The delay in economic reform represents an enormous social tragedy. It drives home the point that India's socialist era, which claimed it would deliver growth with social justice, delivered neither. by Swaminathan S. Indian Removal Act: "Trail of Tears."
katsteevns
by katsteevns  11-2-2009    4
Hollywood has left the impression that the great Indian wars came in the Old West during the late 1800's, a period that many think of simplistically as the "cowboy and Indian" days. But in fact that was a "mopping up" effort. By that time the Indians were nearly finished, their subjugation complete, their numbers decimated. The killing, enslavement, and land theft had begun with the arrival of the Europeans. But it may have reached its nadir when it became federal policy under President (Andrew) Jackson.

United Nations of America to meet in Nov. 7th

Huh? You say - smile. Well not entirely accurate, I guess but what else would you call a meeting between the President and all the recognized Native American Tribes (Nations) on November 7th. At the very least, it's a good step forward in making up for 230 years plus of broken promises between our national government and the daughters and sons of the first inhabitants of this land. Now that I think of it, we are all immigrants right?

The roving runner goes barefoot
Lexica
by Lexica  10-9-2009
More: Web sites on barefoot running recommend starting slowly to acclimate your feet, and they are right. Although I wasn’t feeling any pain during the run, my feet were indeed hurting a bit the next day on the top and outside. But it felt more like the soreness of underused muscles rather than an injury. As for the soles of my feet, they were fine… My facial muscles felt a bit tired, but that was from smiling most of the way. I’m not sure if it was the liberating feeling of running barefoot, or chatting with an author whose book I had just devoured, or if I was just enjoying other runners’ reactions to two guys running barefoot in Central Park, but this was fun, just as running should be. Near the end of our run, as we passed Tavern on the Green, a runner sidled up alongside us. “You guys enjoying your barefoot run?” he asked. Sure are, we responded. “Well listen, there’s this book you have to check out,” he said. “It’s called ‘Born to Run.’”

Remember When?
thisnamecantbetaken
by thisnamecantbetaken  9-30-2009    10
When being sent to the principal's office was nothing compared to the fate that awaited a misbehaving student at home. Basically, we were in fear for our lives but it wasn't because of drive-by shootings, drugs, gangs, etc. Our parents and grandparents were a much bigger threat! The worst thing you could catch from the opposite sex was cooties. It was unbelievable that dodgeball wasn't an Olympic event. Having a weapon in school meant being caught with a slingshot. Scrapes and bruises were kissed and made better. Taking drugs meant orange-flavored chewable aspirin. Abilities were discovered because of a "double-dog-dare." If you can remember most or all of these, then you have LIVED!!! Didn't that feel good? Just to go back and say, "Yeah, I remember that!" Here's another blast from the past. Do you remember? .:) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3CR8DMFfFs8

Indian Battlefield Tactics
foxyarse
by foxyarse  9-18-2009    1
At the Battle of the Little Bighorn, the Sioux and Cheyenne war chiefs used a variety of methods to command their men. John Siverston noted the Indians' use of eagle horns: "We could not see the Indians, but they were signaling all the time to each other with their little bone whistles." The Indians used other audible signals as well. Charles DeRudio recalled, "we heard the powerful voice of a savage crying out, making the same sound four times, and after these two signals, we saw 200 or more savages leave the bluffs and ford the river, evidently leaving the ground."
