Republiucan Health Bill
kareval
by kareval  11-4-2009    1
“As Leader Boehner has made clear, our proposal will focus on the No. 1 concern of the American people—reducing health care costs, and we do it at a price tag our nation can afford,” said spokeswoman Antonia Ferrier. “Our proposal will help struggling middle-class families and small businesses by increasing access to affordable, high-quality health care,” Ferrier said. It also includes a ban on any “federal funding for abortions except in cases of rape, incest or threat to the life of the mother.” Of course, in true Dem fashion, they responded to the Republican bill with this profound and poignant comment: It’s “insubstantial.” and…

U.S. Offshoring and Multinational Corporations
sahara
by sahara  11-2-2009    1
Perhaps the ultimate expression of capitalism results in the export of jobs to lowest-cost countries to enable what used to be “American companies”, now multinational corporations that have the sole goal of maximizing their corporate profits. The ultimate political expression has evolved to a sector of the world that is, in effect, ruled by multinational corporations. What is worse is that these multinationals fail to realize that ultimately they are undercutting their own profits and shrinking their own market by underminding their own profit center in formerly prosperous prime economies. The bonus from offshoring can only last so long and is highly subject to proper application and use within a given multinational corporation. Offshoring is not a cure-all for corporate profits, nor a real solution for long-term benefit to anyone. No government contracts should be given to multinational corporations, ever!

The Predator Insurance Company
reinhmr
by reinhmr  10-11-2009
The breathless tone of statements like the one below seem to suggest it is news that insurance companies want to make money. The reason we would rely on insurance companies whose business model is to "target coverage on the healthy and delay payments to the sick" is that the people buying insurance have the opposite incentives and we think that both parties in a free market will set the price at the most efficient level, the level that reflects the actual scarcity value of the goods and services being traded. It is like saying why let the prices of shares be set by stock brokers since they just want buy low and sell high? Because the people selling them have the opposite incentives and we think the price that results from their exchange will best reflect the underlying values of the goods involved.

More: Lawrence Katz, a labor economist at Harvard, sensibly points out that one could generate incentives to excel for less: “I don’t think the added incentive of earning $100 million over $50 million is very different than the incentive of making $10 million over $5 million,” he told me once.

Cuting the Ties Between Poverty and Obesity
zizzy
by zizzy  9-30-2009
I had to move to a completely different neighborhood in order to have regular access to fat-free milk. ... When we talk about obesity and the way it correlates is poverty, we spend most of our time talking about pushing low-income consumers into making healthier choices and probably not enough time discussing how we can get food retailers to sell healthy food them in the first place. more @ clip source

The Dollar: Like it Or Not Change is Coming

Last week we learned that the national debt is likely to grow by more than $9 trillion. That's not great news -- no one likes a big deficit -- but President Obama inherited an economic mess from the Bush administration, and the cleanup comes with an inevitably high price tag. We're paying it now.

New England Journal of Medicine: Contain health costs by removing profit incentives
masbury
by masbury  9-25-2009
As long as there is a profit incentive to add services, medical care will be first a business focused on increasing profits rather than a service improving health. "Furthermore, competition doesn’t lower prices in medical care as it does in other markets, because physicians usually choose the services to be provided and are paid largely by insurance " not by the consumers for whose business they would compete if this were an ordinary market."

Catalogue of Liberal Lies About National Healthcare Part IV
merrie
by merrie  9-13-2009    1
while mandating a list of services -- i.e. every "medical" service with a powerful lobby -- which is why Joe and Ruth Zelinsky, both 88, of Paterson, N.J., are both covered in case either one of them ever needs a boob job. The "public option" trigger is something other than a national takeover of health care. Why does the government get to decide when the "trigger" has been met, allowing it to do something terrible to us? Either the government is better at providing goods and services or the free market is -- and I believe the historical record is clear on that. Thinking more broadly, how about triggers for paying taxes? Under my "public option" plan, citizens would not have to pay taxes until a trigger kicks in. National health care will not cover abortions or illegal immigrants. This appeared in an earlier installment of "Liberal Lies About Health Care," but I keep seeing Democrats like Howard Dean and Rep. Jan Schakowsky on TV angrily shouting
