POPSWilliam Jefferson Sentenced to 13 Years in Prison
U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III delivered the sentence at a packed courtroom in the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Va. Prosecutors had asked for 27 to 33 years in prison, while Jefferson’s lawyers said the prison term should be less than 10 years. Ellis said that Jefferson, a New Orleans Democrat who served nine terms in Congress, must surrender at the federal correctional facility ultimately selected for his incarceration by the Bureau of Prisons. The judge said he will hold a hearing next week to set date for when Jefferson must report to prison. If the judge approves the prosecution’s request, the former congressman would have to report immediately. Jefferson’s attorneys have asked for Jan. 4 reporting date. Jefferson is expected to be assigned to a low-security prison in the federal system, possibly in Florida. Ellis has not yet ruled on whether Jefferson can remain free while he pursues his appeal, which will likely take months.

POPSFlorida Cereal Stealer Gets 15 Years in Prison The judge who sentenced Griffin seems to agree, but said he was bound by the law to give the reoffender the mandatory minimum. “Personally, I think the money could have been better spent in treatment rather than incarceration for 15 years, but that is not my decision,” Bartow Judge Donald Jacobsen said. “It seems to me that treatment would be a far better resolution of this.”

POPS Najibullah Zazi Indicted in Terror Plot
NYPD raids in Queens last week turned up nine backpacks and cell phones, raising fears of a potential attack in the city's sprawling subway system. Authorities withheld the targets of the plot. But sources had told the Daily News that Zazi did computer searches involving baseball stadiums - and carried maps of other New York venues on his computer. Whatever the target, "Zazi took substantial steps toward carrying out the plan," according to a government memorandum demanding his immediate incarceration. The feds painted the bearded Zazi, 24, as a mad bomber whipping up batches of lethal explosives over a stove inside an Aurora, Colo., hotel suite. While inside the suite on Sept. 6-7, Zazi tried several times to reach an unidentified individual "seeking \ correct mixture of ingredients to make explosives," a government memorandum said. "Each communication \ more urgent in tone than the last." Traces of bomb-making material were discovered in a vent .

POPSCalifornia wants to cut legal aid attorneys for the poor More: Adachi said his office would be devastated and would have to fire 15 to 20 attorneys, about 20 percent of his staff. Then, he said, ''The whole system would begin to fail.'' Defendants would sit in jail longer, increasing incarceration costs, Adachi said. Cases would be delayed while private attorneys get up to speed, creating bigger clogs in a legal pipeline that barely trickles now. Adachi's current budget is nearly $24 million -- ''less than half what the police and sheriff's departments spend in overtime,'' he notes. Slashing it would mean farming out 6,000 cases to private lawyers, ranging from misdemeanors to felonies. That would cost $3 million to $4 million, Adachi estimates, or up to twice as much as the cut itself. ''It's robbing Peter to pay Paul,'' he said, because, inevitably, it's the county general fund that has to pay the extra costs -- the same fund that pays for his office. ''It's really shortsighted.''

POPSFlorida City Caught Criminalizing the Homeless When I worked in downtown San Diego during a visit by then Pres. Clinton, the cops rounded up all the homeless in the downtown area and shuttled them up to LA. Presumably so the Pres would not have to see any of his ‘subjects’ living on the street. Sadly, this kind of cruelty towards people who are homeless is not restricted only to St. Petersburg. Take a glimpse at the list of the Top 20 Meanest Cities: http://www.nationalhomeless.org/publications/crimreport/meanest.html See if your town is on the list.
