A concern that is not publicly expressed is the affect McCain's imprisonment had on his psyche. Why this is not better examined scares me.

McCain's Double Standard
spirithiker
by spirithiker  10-8-2008
If McCain wants to bash Obama for his occasional appearances on the same board with Ayers, a 1970's political activist who Obama disclaims friendship with, then he needs to examine his admitted long-time friendship to a government operative who was in the thick of the biggest political scandal in American history - and one of the greatest threats to the rule of law, G. Gordon Liddy. Both Ayers and Liddy say they have no regrets for what they did. Both served prison terms for their actions. Liddy, a radio talk show host, gives the advice: "if the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms comes to disarm you, resist them with arms. Go for a head shot, they're going to be wearing bulletproof vests. Kill the sons of bitches." Ayers, since imprisonment, has spent his time helping the poor and disadvantaged. McCain thinks Obama should apologize for associating with a criminal extremist. To which Obama might reply: After you.

Death Row Realism
debbyski
by debbyski  10-2-2008    2
"Why should we pay to keep him locked up for life? I hear that question constantly. Few people know the answer: It's cheaper -- much, much cheaper than execution. If we condemn the worst offenders, like Massie, to permanent imprisonment, resources now spent on the death penalty could be used to investigate unsolved homicides, modernize crime labs and expand effective violence prevention programs, especially in at-risk communities. The money also could be used to intervene in the lives of children at risk and to invest in their education -- to stop future victimization. To take a life in order to prove how much we value another life does not strengthen our society. It is a public policy that devalues our very being and detracts crucial resources from programs that could truly make our communities safe."

SCOTUS Admits Blunder on UCMJ, But Says "Nevermind"
merrie
by merrie  10-1-2008
and shows again, how Obama's model judges pull constitutional law from thin air. That was spectacularly clueless, and one of the many occasions on which Obama has demonstrated that for all his fine degrees from Columbia and Harvard Law, he's ignorant of world history. First, no one at Nuremberg was permitted to file a habeas corpus petition in the American courts. Second, the Military Commissions Act provides substantially greater procedural and substantive protection than what any of the Nuremberg defendants had. Rights for foreigners accused of being terrorists that even our own service personnel don't get. A "living, breathing" Constitution whose answers, are blowin' in the wind. You do get an indirect vote on whether that's what you want — but you have to cast it through your choices for POTUS/VPOTUS and (even less directly) U.S. Senators. Judicial appointments are just one more issue on which this year's presidential election presents you with a stark, vivid choice.

U.S. Perpetuates Mass Killings In Iraq
thisnamecantbetaken

I couldn't care less who wins the elections. Looking at both candidates, it seems America isn't the least bit interested in real change. Is anyone asking the candidates about what they are going to do about the US' slow but steady slide into fascism? Or about limiting presidential power? Or about banning torture? Or about the return of Habeus Corpus? Or about extraordinary renditions and secret prisons? Or about preemptive aggression? Or about making your war criminals pay for their crimes? Hmm? Anyone? No. No. Let's just keep it entertaining, low key and unsubstantial. Let's talk about lipstick! Yeah! Blacks vs whites, Democrats vs Republicans, pro-life vs pro-choice, Christians vs atheists blah blah blah... "Divide and conquer!". The power elite working behind the scenes have that pat down and the US citizenry is blissfully (perhaps willingly) oblivious... *shaking my head in disbelief* Oops! No time to comment any more! The O'Reilly Factor's on! No spin! Really!

Down with Republicans!
Maxwell_Smart
by Maxwell_Smart  9-26-2008
The Republican Party is quickly morphing into what every person hates. They get away with this stuff because they can. Watch the 60-minute video for a good overview. We are the only ones that can put pressure on such tactics to stop it from destroying us all. This is just another example that shows why people need to get involved once again in helping America (SELF-government). With the Third Parties combining, now is the time for everyone on the sidelines to start jumping in and helping. Learn more about that here... www.thirdpartyticket.com Spread the word! That is about all you have to do.

Strange Laws
sahara
by sahara  8-22-2008    1
In Phoenix, Arizona, you can't walk through a hotel lobby with spurs on. In California, a law created in 1925 makes it illegal to wiggle while dancing. In Utah, daylight must be visible between dancing couples. In Michigan, it is against the law for a lady to lift her skirt more than 6 inches while walking through a mud puddle. In North Carolina, it is against the law for a rabbit to race down the street. In Georgia, it's against the law to spread a false rumor. In West Virginia, one can't cook sauerkraut or cabbage due to the odors and the offence is subject to imprisonment. In Missouri, a man must have a permit to shave. The law states that more than 3000 sheep cannot be herded down Hollywood Blvd. at any one time. In Texas, it is still a "hanging offense" to steal cattle. In Virginia, the Code of 1930 has a statute which prohibits corrupt practices or bribery by any person other than political candidates.

Protecting Them Protects Us
debbyski

"This case is about our unequivocal treaty obligation to comply with an International Court of Justice judgment and the Vienna Convention, which has allowed diplomats such as myself to save hundreds if not thousands of American lives. Were the tables turned -- American citizens arrested abroad and denied consular access, with an ICJ judgment requiring review of those cases for prejudice, and another nation refusing to comply -- our leaders would rightly demand that compliance be forthcoming."

Russian Dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn Dead
blueridge
by blueridge  8-4-2008
How symbolic as America has also forgotten the warning of this experienced anti-communist who railed against Stalin while the US was preoccupied with Hitler (which Pat Buchanan laments in his new book The Unnecessary War): "The Gulag Archipelago" is a non-fictional account ...great holocaust of our century-- the imprisonment, brutalization and very often murder of tens of millions of innocent Soviet citizens by their own Government, mostly during Stalin's rule from 1929 to 1953. The present generation has hardly heard of this man who warned of the Russian tyranny of his time coming to America: A state of war only serves as an excuse for domestic tyranny. The next war... may well bury Western civilization forever. Hastiness and superficiality are the psychic diseases of the 20th century, and more than anywhere else this disease is reflected in the press. Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

The Unlikely Role of Patriot Pirates
merrie
by merrie  7-3-2008    1
in bloody mismatches of firepower and seamanship. But the payday was deemed worth the risk. One success, shrugged the Philadelphia financier Robert Morris, an avid investor, "will pay for two, three, or four losses." The crews themselves were no less bullish. One New Hampshire seaman, just 14 years old, collected a ton of sugar, 40 gallons of rum, and $100 in gold from the proceeds of one captured ship. Although a six-week privateering jaunt turned into two years of combat and harsh imprisonment for a Connecticut teenager, he astonished his family by hopping another privateer two days after staggering home. He ended the war a wealthy man. Benjamin Franklin, America's first emissary to France and a strong supporter of privateering, had no illusions about defeating the Royal Navy, but he aimed to prolong the sea war in order to weaken British resolve. "We expect to make their merchants sick of a contest in which so much is risked and nothing gained."
