Microsoft Exposes Firefox Users to Drive-By Malware Downloads
merrie
by merrie  10-17-2009    8
Here, the affected process is the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) hosting process, PresentationHost.exe. While the vulnerability is in an IE component, there is an attack vector for Firefox users as well. The reason is that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installs a “Windows Presentation Foundation” plug-in in Firefox. Now, Microsoft’s security folks are actually recommending that Firefox users uninstall the buggy add-on: For Firefox users with .NET Framework 3.5 installed, you may use “Tools”-> “Add-ons” -> “Plugins”, select “Windows Presentation Foundation”, and click “Disable" This introduction of vulnerabilities in a competing browser is a colossal embarrassment for Microsoft. At the time of the surreptitious installs, there were prescient warnings from many in the community about the security implications of introducing new code into browsers without the knowledge " and consent " of end users. http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=4614&tag=nl.e589

6 Reasons Why Mozilla Firefox Is Safe Compared To Internet Explorer
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  8-26-2009    8
While statistics put Internet Explorer clearly ahead as the most widely used web browser, it’s clear to many people that it is not due to the excellent programming. the practice of ‘bundling’ the infamous browser with the every copy of the operating system represents the primary reason behind its crushing dominance. ~~~ 4. Conscious users can install NoScript, an add-on that takes care of vulnerabilities that are not yet patched, either in Firefox or other plug-ins such as Java, JavaScript and Adobe’s Flash. It achieves this goal by allowing the user to selectively enable interactive objects that the user decides to trust, automatically blocking the rest. 5. Security through obscurity; malicious programmers will always target the browser with the largest user base, especially if that user base is less tech savvy. 6. Firefox uses a service provided by Google that notifies the user before entering a potentially malicious web site. These websites ask for your financial data und

Gas prices: The key to fuel economy
jatfla
by jatfla  5-19-2009    1
There will be a market for these smaller cars, but how many families can fit theirs into one? They are going to be super dangerous on our highways; ie. collisions and in the long run cost people more. This is nothing but pure blackmail. All the while, those in power will continue to sport about in whatever, usually at taxpayers expense, and the really, really good plan for energy independence is going down the drain. Control us by increasing the price of gasoline so that we can't afford the vehicles we want, are appropriate for our households, offer a reasonable amount of physical security, etc... There is not enough space to say everything about why I hate this. We have become serfs to this Administration.

Report Finds Major U.S. Companies Have Offshore Tax Havens
paleblue
by paleblue  1-16-2009
Hmmm I'd say something is WRONG here.. our so called hired/elected officials get away with all sorts of crimes up to and including either not having to pay certain taxes (ie.. social security) or somehow forget to pay taxes AT ALL and get away with it.. Maidoff rips all sorts of folks off of BILLIONS of dollars and ignores a ruling and still sends out even more millions in so called gifts and gets a stay out of jail card while living it up in a multi million $ penthouse.. Companies aren't paying taxes or shelter it some sort of way.. Meanwhile we work our azzes off don't get away with owing $2.50 on something without getting a warning that ' our legal dept. will be contacting you ASSHOLE' in the mail or harassing phone calls all day long.. WTF.. We are such suckers our county has been stolen they've managed to take all of our money away and give us CRAP.. and we run around like lil F'g trained monkeys.. Whats going on here!! !!!! They even spend our cash anyway they deem fit!!!

Talking Torture With the casts of 24, Lie to Me
jatfla

What stupidity! Does the world (ie. the US) actually believe that 'Torture' began with the Bush Administration?? Whatever...I still enjoy "24". I keep looking for someone who will make the security of US citizens their priority...considering their sworn oath to the Constitution. Torture? I'm not so naive or PC.

Serious security flaw found in Internet Explorer
spirithiker
by spirithiker  12-16-2008
Another good reason to switch to another browser, like Firefox (hint, hint) :) Of course, Microsoft won't recomend this course of action. "I cannot recommend people switch due to this one flaw," said John Curran, head of Microsoft UK's Windows group. Richard Cox, chief information officer of anti-spam body The Spamhaus Project and an expert on privacy and cyber security, echoed Trend Micro's warning. "It won't be long before someone reverse engineers this exploit for more fraudulent purposes. Trend Mico's advice is very sensible," he said.

I was looking for Lua skills and Python skills stuff to compare the adoption and ease of getting into these two scripting languages. It puzzles me that Lua doesn't appear to have any kind of thriving community, despite the advantage of being open source, and even used to script World of Warcraft. But that's kinda beside the point. I'm clipping this site because I like the use of slate greys and distressed text with ornaments. It's a refreshing compromise between the hacker aesthetic and style ie. not another yawn-black-and-green-The-Matrix-style site.
