Climategate: You should be steamed
dl211
by dl211  1-5-2010    1
Third, and most important, skeptics believe that climate models are grossly overpredicting future warming from rising concentrations of carbon dioxide. We are being told that numerical models that cannot make accurate 5- to 10-day forecasts can be simplified and run forward for 100 years with results so reliable you can impose an economic disaster on the U.S. and the world. The revelation of Climategate occurs at a time when the accuracy of the climate models is being seriously questioned. Over the last decade Earth's temperature has not warmed, yet every model (there are many) predicted a significant increase in global temperatures for that time period. If the climate models cannot get it right for the past 10 years, why should we trust them for the next century?

Facts for Predicting Global Cooling for the Next Three Decades
amgumen
by amgumen  1-3-2010
Global warming (i.e, the warming since 1977) is over. The minute increase of anthropogenic CO2 in the atmosphere (0.008%) was not the cause of the warming—it was a continuation of natural cycles that occurred over the past 500 years. The PDO cool mode has replaced the warm mode in the Pacific Ocean, virtually assuring us of about 30 years of global cooling, perhaps much deeper than the global cooling from about 1945 to 1977. Just how much cooler the global climate will be during this cool cycle is uncertain. Recent solar changes suggest that it could be fairly severe, perhaps more like the 1880 to 1915 cool cycle than the more moderate 1945-1977 cool cycle. A more drastic cooling, similar to that during the Dalton and Maunder minimums, could plunge the Earth into another Little Ice Age, but only time will tell if that is likely.

the hockey stick graph. This icon showed temperatures in the last 1,000 years to have been stable — no Medieval Warm Period, not even the Little Ice Age of a few centuries ago. Connolley took control of all things climate in the most used information source the world has ever known – Wikipedia. On Feb. 14, he began to erase the Little Ice Age; on Aug.11, the Medieval Warm Period. In October, he turned his attention to the hockey stick graph. Connolley created or rewrote 5,428 unique Wikipedia articles. His control over Wikipedia was greater still, however, through the role he obtained at Wikipedia as a website administrator, which allowed him to act with virtual impunity. When Connolley didn’t like the subject of a certain article, he removed it — more than 500 articles of various descriptions disappeared at his hand. over 2,000 Wikipedia contributors who ran afoul of him found themselves blocked from making further contributions.

unprecedented and dangerous warm period. As we now know from the Climategate Emails, this band saw the Medieval Warm Period as an enormous obstacle in their mission of spreading the word about global warming. If temperatures were warmer 1,000 years ago than today, the Climategate Emails explain in detail, their message that we now live in the warmest of all possible times would be undermined. As put by one band member, a Briton named Folland at the Hadley Centre, a Medieval Warm Period “dilutes the message rather significantly.” Even before the Climategate Emails came to light, the problem posed by the Medieval Warm Period to this band was known. “We have to get rid of the Medieval Warm Period” read a pre-Climategate email, circa 1995, as attested to at hearings of the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment & Public Works. But the Climategate transcripts were more extensive and more illuminating —

The Coming Ice Age
CrazyRedHead
by CrazyRedHead  12-10-2009
"Earth’s climate is controlled by the Sun. In comparison, every other factor is trivial. The coldest part of the Little Ice Age during the latter half of the seventeenth century was marked by the nearly complete absence of sunspots. And the Sun now appears to be entering a new period of quiescence. August of 2008 was the first month since the year 1913 that no sunspots were observed. As I write, the sun remains quiet. We are in a cooling trend."

ClimateGate: the raw data

"We have five different records covering Darwin from 1941 on. They all agree almost exactly. Why adjust them at all? They’ve just added a huge artificial totally imaginary trend to the last half of the raw data!....One thing is clear from this. People who say that “Climategate was only about scientists behaving badly, but the data is OK” are wrong. At least one part of the data is bad, too. The Smoking Gun for that statement is at Darwin Zero."

with the expectations of the sponsors. Like the royal favourites of mediaeval times, they soar in the air on a zephyr of preferment, only to get too close to the sun and plunge to earth. Which brings us to: Secrecy In the security of powerful patronage some of the new brigade began to think that they were above not only the procedures of science, but of all other academic disciplines as well. In the case of the notorious Hockey Stick, for example, they claimed that knowledge from history, art, literature, archaeology etc. was all wrong and that their computer manipulation of such tenuous data as tree rings established that the Little Ice Age and the Mediaeval Warm Period never happened. The most powerful patrons of all, the UN, seized on the results and made them the main feature of one of their apocalyptic IPCC reports on the coming climate disaster. One of the first tests of any scientific work is to pose the question “Can the results be reproduced?”

"In 1998, Stanley Ambrose, an anthropology professor at the University of Illinois, proposed in the Journal of Human Evolution that the effects of the Toba eruption and the Ice Age that followed could explain the apparent bottleneck in human populations that geneticists believe occurred between 50,000 and 100,000 years ago. The lack of genetic diversity among humans alive today suggests that during this time period humans came very close to becoming extinct..."

For all the history of the Earth, a few decades is a small blip on the grand scale, and what these alarmists are doing is equivalent to tracking the temperature from winter to spring (it hotter!) to summer (it's really, really hotter!) and claiming that the Earth will melt down by December and, natch, the solution is always the same: statism. theblogprof.blogspot.com/ Read post and view Videos (part2 and part3) http://bit.ly/5fuwQK Also: In Search Of...  Holdren can’t help it, of course; he wants power, our money, and lots of authority to do us down socialist-style to satisfy his ego. What do you say? That he really believes in that nonsense? Now. Come friends. Don’t get him wrong. It is true that he doesn’t really believe in green issues, but only wants what they can give him personally – cars, cash and kudos; but hey, what else should a specious and fallacious expert do? Like other Obama-ites, he is gaining ground on us lesser mortals simply by saying ridiculous things. I’m sure that if we clued-up we could be just as stupid. Remember (TCSDaily interview, 2003) Holdren famously betrayed his lack of scientific credibility by saying that the scientific ‘burden of proof’ changes with time (you know, like global ice-age freezing changes to global warming changes to climate change, and so on, all without proof or explanation. Seems he might be right!).

BREAKING: NZ’s NIWA Accused of CRU-Style Temperature Faking
merrie
by merrie  11-25-2009    1
Gone is the relentless rising temperature trend, and instead there appears to have been a much smaller growth in warming, consistent with the warming up of the planet after the end of the Little Ice Age in 1850. The revelations are published today in a news alert from The Climate Science Coalition of NZ Straight away you can see there's no slope"either up or down. The temperatures are remarkably constant way back to the 1850s. Of course, the temperature still varies from year to year, but the trend stays level"statistically insignificant at 0.06 C per century since 1850. Putting these two graphs side by side, you can see huge differences. What is going on? Why does NIWA's graph show strong warming, but graphing their own raw data looks completely different? Their graph shows warming, but the actual temperature readings show none whatsoever! Have the readings in the official NIWA graph been adjusted? TBR.cc briefingroom.typepad.com http://bit.ly/5CixGL

Appalachian Mountains Rock Ice Age, 460 Million Years Ago
merrie
by merrie  11-24-2009    3
By the time humans first walked their slopes, the Appalachian mountains had worn down from prehistoric peaks over 16,000 ft (5,000 m) high to 6,500 ft (2,000 m) today. Today, the plant and animal life of the Northern Appalachians is still recovering from the last glacial period, which ended 10,000 years ago. The Southern Appalachians were never buried beneath the great ice-sheets of that frigid time, providing refuge for native species. Often spreading a couple hundred miles wide, the chain's north-south alignment allowed easy migration of animals fleeing the glaciers. Had these mountains been aligned east-west, like the European Alps, they would have presented a barrier to migration, a trap that would have ensured mass extinctions. The Appalachian Mountains are a long system of mountains, stretching from Newfoundland in Canada all the way to Alabama in the southern United States. (the full trail in the United States is 2,174 miles long)

How Global warming Leads To The Ice Age
mcsmithblack
by mcsmithblack  11-14-2009    3
Short and sweet. Makes for some interesting reading. More from the article follows: "Patterson says that sudden climate switches like the Big Freeze are far from unusual in the geological record. The Younger Dryas was brought about when a glacial lake covering most of north-west Canada burst its banks and poured into the North Atlantic and Arctic OceansMovie Camera. The huge flood diluted the salinity-driven North Atlantic Ocean mega-currents, including the Gulf Stream, and stalled it. Two studies published in 2006 show that the same thing happened again 8200 years ago, when the Northern hemisphere went through another cold spell."

The Crisis of Global Land Use

by celestialdancer  10-11-2009    2
Meeting these huge new agricultural demands will be one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. At present, it is completely unclear how (and if) we can do it. If this wasn't enough, we must also address the massive environmental impacts of our current agricultural practices, which new evidence indicates rival the impacts of climate change. Consider the following. Already, we have cleared or converted more than 35 percent of the earth's ice-free land surface for agriculture, whether for croplands, pastures or rangelands. In fact, the area used for agriculture is nearly 60 times larger than the area of all of the world's cities and suburbs. Since the last ice age, nothing has been more disruptive to the planet's ecosystems than agriculture. What will happen to our remaining ecosystems, including tropical rainforests, if we need to double or triple world agricultural production, while simultaneously coping with climate change? Yes, it is an inconvenient truth as the origi

WH Science Czar John Holdren: Ice Age Will Kill 1 Billion
merrie
by merrie  10-11-2009    1
Holdren and Ehrlich had previously articulated the theory in their 1973 textbook "Human Ecology: Problems and Solutions" in which they argued on page 198 that the main effect of carbon-dioxide-induced global warming "might be to speed up circulation patterns and to bring arctic cold farther south and Antarctic cold farther north." On page 377, the authors returned to their constant theme: The only way to control a foreseen increasing global food crisis was to control population. Noting that a 1967 presidential science advisory commission had concluded that the solution to the "world food problem" likely after 1985 "demands that programs of population control be initiated now." (Emphasis in original text.) Commenting on the conclusions of the 1967 presidential advisory report, the authors wrote, "We emphatically agreed then, and the situation is even more urgent today." A controversial report released earlier this month by the Congressional Budget Office, or CBO,
