Change you can believe in - change for the worse
pkronfield
by pkronfield  Yesterday 8:33 AM    7
Do you like paying taxes, then watch government become bigger and more incompetent? Do you like discovering your family doesn't have enough income and start looking for a second job, only to find there are none? Do you really want a health care system like Canada's (ask any Canadian what they think of their health care - they wait over a year for an MRI, for example..) Did you like Carter's sky high inflation with a downward spiraling productivity? Then you will LOVE the change Obama brings you.

Well-Paid Teachers? I’m on Board
rmowery
by rmowery  Yesterday 1:16 AM    4
I agree. We should be paying our teachers, police, fireman, EMT/Medics, etc. more money. These are the people who make a difference in our communities and countries. The money these greedy CEO's make should be used toward teachers. Granted - there needs to be metrics and performance criteria put on the teachers, but they def. do not get paid what they should.

Oil Outlook Clouds Russia’s Economic Future
merrie
by merrie  10-8-2008    3
That could trigger a vicious circle of falling income and investment, as production gets more expensive in Russia's aging fields. The era of record profits from oil and gas is over - that's according to Russia's Finance Minister Alexey Kudrin. 2008 is likely to be the year of peak oil and gas production in the country. The big oil companies are cutting investment in new projects. Russia has received up to $1 Billion a day in oil revenues in recent years, and the country's budget and economy remain highly dependent on hydrocarbon earnings. The world financial crisis and recession has triggered big falls in the world's oil price. That will significantly affect the Russian budget, according to Mikhail Kroutikhin, partner at Rusenergy.

U.S. Budget Deficit: $438 Billion
Andrew Gillies
by Andrew Gillies  10-8-2008
AP clip, via our Washington feed http://www.forbes.com/breakingnews/AP_Washington_full.html, also points to the current administration's poor track record in fiscal matters. "A later promise to cut the deficit in half by the time Bush leaves office is in tatters," story says, "and virtually no one takes seriously his proposed path to a balanced budget by 2012."

The Health Care Issue
monstersmom
by monstersmom  10-7-2008    1
So what would happen? The good news, such as it is, is that more people would buy individual insurance. Indeed, the total number of uninsured Americans might decline marginally under the McCain plan — although many more Americans would be without insurance than under the Obama plan. But the people gaining insurance would be those who need it least: relatively healthy Americans with high incomes. Why? Because insurance companies want to cover only healthy people, and even among the healthy only those able to pay a lot in addition to their tax credit would be able to afford coverage (remember, it’s a $5,000 credit, but the average family policy actually costs more than $12,000). Meanwhile, the people losing insurance would be those who need it most: lower-income workers who wouldn’t be able to afford individual insurance even with the tax credit, and Americans with health problems whom insurance companies won’t cover.

Movement To Create A New State
ColoradoRight
by ColoradoRight  10-7-2008
Who would have thought that there were people left in Kaleefornia and NOregon who were wanting to work timber and fishing: Locals complain that federal and state regulators have hampered the fishing and timber industries to protect forestlands and endangered species such as sucker fish and the spotted owl. Jobs are so scarce that the median income in the area is only two-thirds that of the rest of the state. Most water from the rainy Shasta region is shipped south, with little economic benefit to the area. Even the California sales tax draws sneers.
