POPSFight the Right-Wing Smears Sad to say, I know and receive email from people (including relatives) who have no problem forwarding right-wing lies and racist propaganda about Obama. I went to this site to have a good source of information to refute the hate emails and replied to all who received, and sent, the smear emails I have received. I encourage you to do the same if you have the misfortune to be sent trashy lies about Barack Obama. To say nothing is to condone the sending and receiving of such emails.

POPSLet's junk the myths and celebrate what we've got Moreover, we need to become responsible versus petty humans; in the words of the article "When you see nothing but junk, create quality. Where quality is hard to find, curate it, adding your own seal of approval with a link. When you read inaccuracies and misunderstandings, add facts, corrections, context and journalism. If people on the internet get things wrong, educate them. When you hear the noise of people talking online, listen." Thumbs up.

POPSEthical considerations for biologically uplifting nonhuman animals Through the application of Rawlsian moral frameworks, and in consideration of the acknowledgement of legally recognized nonhuman persons, it can be shown that the presence of uplift biotechnologies will represent a new primary good and will thus necessitate the inclusion of highly sapient nonhumans into what has traditionally been regarded as human society.

POPSCouric Hides Embarrassing Palin Tape CBS is getting a little too cozy with Republican candidates in exchange for exclusivity. This goes against journalistic ethics and just plain good common sense. There have been several other signs of favoritism by Couric and CBS towards the McCain campaign which smacks of CBS becoming a media machine for the Republican party. Palin is reported to be unable to name another Supreme Court ruling aside from Roe v Wade; and she floundered on simple American political history questions taught to middle school students. The fact that Palin somehow graduated from University of Idaho with a minor in political science makes these flounderings and blunders unacceptable as a Vice Presidential candidate. The Republican Party should hang its head in shame. I wonder how she would do on the TV show "Are you smarter than a 5th grader?"

POPSUS Army Invests in 'Thought Helmet' Technology for Voiceless Communication For people concerned about the ethics of the technology, Elmar Schmeisser, the Army neuroscientist overseeing the program, reassures that the technology will not allow mind-reading. As he explains, since every user has to be trained with the system, it would be impossible to use the technology against an individual´s will and without their cooperation.

POPSI'n a sex worker-don't take away my livelihood This article is written by a woman in the sex trade. She presents a side of this issue that is quite different than what is commonly assumed. Her reasons are valid, and I am not going to pass judgment on her career choice, as short as it may be. She does present a strong case for making prostitution legal.

POPSLesson of the Day: How Our Country Should Live More Like the Amish “In Amish life: principles of compassion, empathy, generosity and selflessness are central. When they run their community this way, it is admirable. When we try to solve our country's problems in much the same way, it is degraded and thought despicable.” “As children we are taught to take turns, to share & to treat others as we would want to be treated. These are basic principles that few people would deny are essential to being a kind, compassionate, moral person, whether a child or adult.” “We apply these principles to our personal lives, but when it comes to our country, our government and our communities, we start hearing things about "no free rides" and about how we mustn't become a welfare state.” "What we teach our children, what we challenge ourselves with spiritually, what we know is right in any other context...it all suddenly no longer applies.”

POPSMinority Report is being materialized "The inventors of the technology claim the system can distinguish between people’s memories of events they witnessed and between deeds they committed" “As we enter more fully into the era of mapping and understanding the brain, society will face an increasing number of important ethical, legal and social issues raised by these new technologies,” Mr. Greely, the Stanford bioethicist, and his colleague Judy Illes wrote last year in the American Journal of Law & Medicine." Interesting article. Raises many questions; a) the easiest one is is it valid? why easiest because it can be one day answered, at least i assume so. b) if it is valid, should we use it? where is the line of privacy? should there be a line as such? i find it fundamentally challenging the human conceptual descriptions of what is self, identity, society and its relation. Fascinating. what do you think?

POPSThe Governor Palin 'scoop du jour' leads to other questions about elitism, ethics, public health and the insufferable phoniness that plagues politics and politicians. Can you believe the latest scandal over Sarah Palin? She installed a tanning bed in the governor's mansion and -- what's worse -- she paid for the contraption with her own money! The latest scandal over Sarah Palin was first reported by a couple of left-wing nuts at Narco News, an online publicaton that in the past I've seen putting out pro-Hugo Chavez propaganda. Here's the spin on the tanning bed scandal from Narco News: "A politician emerges, we are told, from humble roots and pledges to restore America’s small town family values and represent the common man and woman." And yet all along, the story continues, she's using a tanning bed! It's all on par, according to NarcoNews, with John Edward's $400 haircut!

POPSPressure On Charles Rangel To Step Down "Not Even On The Table" The congressman and his aides have taken pains to be transparent as they discover more and more errors on his tax and financial disclosure forms. Mr. Rangel will hire a leading forensic accountant to investigate his finances for the last 20 years and issue a report to the House ethics committee, Mr. Davis said, emphasizing that neither Mr. Rangel nor his representatives will see the report before it is delivered.

POPSPalin's Lawyer: Monegan Fired for 'Rogue Mentality'
The filing includes a July 17, 2007, e-mail Palin sent to Monegan in which Palin complains that a proposal to restrict gun sales to people who make death threats would still allow her former brother-in-law, Trooper Mike Wooten, to carry a gun, despite the Palin family allegation that Wooten once threatened to kill the governor's father. "Amazing," the e-mail says. "And he's still a trooper, and he still carries a gun, and he still tells anyone who will listen that he will 'never work for that b----' (me) because he has such anger and distain towards my family." The papers add that even if Palin had asked the public safety commissioner to fire a state trooper "based on documented acts of violence and other improper conduct," that wouldn't violate the state Ethics Act "because the public generally shares a common interest in public order and safety." Monegan's attorney didn't immediately return a call for comment. September 15th, 2008 06:40 PM
