Storing Wind Power as Ice?
Socratoad
by Socratoad  12-7-2009    1
Air conditioning in the summer consumes the lion’s share of a building’s energy cost. Calmac Booth is manufacturing a hybrid cooling system. This system exploits an ice bank thermal energy storage tank known as IceBank. IceBank makes and stores ice for use in air conditioning systems when the wind is blowing a bit faster or the sun isn’t shining, that is, at night.

A computer with the processing power of our brain would use 10 megawatts of power!
djkraz
by djkraz  11-16-2009
That is absolutely insane! Obviously this is just an estimate since there are no computers that even compare, but it's still pretty crazy to think about. That's as much power as what a small hydroelectric plant produces.

Water
kmcolo
by kmcolo  4-9-2009
Water, as well as energy, looks to be one of the driving issues of the 21st century. And in some ways they can be seen as the same issue given that with enough inexpensive energy we could purify and transport water. (Though perhaps energy will never be that inexpensive.)

China Dams Reveal Flaws in Climate-Change Weapon

"....That bottom line — some 450,000 tons of global-warming gases each year — would be added to RWE's permitted emissions if it buys the Xiaoxi credits, at a current annual cost of $8 million. And such calculations will be repeated at 37 other Chinese hydro projects where RWE will buy credits. All told, the 38 are expected to produce more than 16 million CDM credits by 2012, legitimizing 16 million tons of emissions in Germany, equivalent to more than 1 percent of annual German emissions. At today's low market prices, those credits would be worth some $300 million, paid to Chinese developers and presumably billed to German electricity customers, who by 2007 were already paying more than double the U.S. average rate per kilowatt-hour."

The Solar Plan
akipta
by akipta  10-19-2008
The most valuable resource of light and heat comes from the sun, and helps to create many other underused natural resources like wind generation and hydroelectric power. This solar energy can and should be harnessed in much greater ways than it is today. To reduce the burdens on the environment, mankind must learn to save energy and to use it more rationally, as well as to grasp and use the most important natural source of energy - the sun - as the source for our planet's energy supply. This site has been created to help you learn about solar planning, designing, and to offer you resources for finding alternative energy products that you can use in your solar planning.

"We The People" Have The Ingenuity & The Resources
merrie
by merrie  10-15-2008
WE HAVE THE POWER. Today, America is under assault from key oil producing states - some of which are radical regimes whose energy prices and policies are systematically undermining our economy, our national security, and the American way of life. We pay a hefty ransom - two billion dollars every day - to the likes of Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Venezuela, among other foreign powers. Americans are sick and tired of our broken energy policy. WE HAVE THE POWER highlights America's need to adopt our World War II mentality of "Do it all, Do it now" by tapping into all of our abundant energy resources . We owe it to future generations to explore the vast amount of oil and gas in the Outer Continental Shelf, Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR), as well as our other vital energy resources including Hydroelectric Power, Wind Power, Oil Shale, Natural Gas, Gas Hydrates, Hydrogen, BioFuels, Solar Power, Clean Coal and Nuclear Power.

Greenpeace founder now backs nuclear power
Antara
by Antara  4-26-2008
From article: The only viable solution is to build hundreds of nuclear power plants over the next century, Moore told the Boise Metro Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday. There isn't enough potential for wind, solar, hydroelectric, and geothermal or other renewable energy sources, he said. With development of coal-fired electric generation stopped cold over greenhouse gases, the only alternative to nuclear power for producing continuous energy at the levels needed is natural gas. But climate change isn't the only reason to move away from fossil fuels. Fossil fuels also are a major health threat. "Coal causes the worst health impacts of anything we are doing today," Moore said.

Hugo's Friend, former Bishop is New President in South America!
righthand
by righthand  4-21-2008
Lugo calls himself an independent and has steered clear of Latin America's more radical leftwing leaders, such as Venezuela's Hugo Chávez and Evo Morales in Bolivia. But he is seen as a likely ally of moderate leftist presidents in the region. Lugo, nicknamed the "bishop of the poor", was confident Paraguayans would elect him in the hope of seeing "a different country", likening himself to a David fighting a "monstrous Goliath". The Colorado party has stayed in power by means of democracy and dictatorship, ruling even longer than Cuba's Communist party. Eight months ago, Lugo welded unions, Indians and poor farmers into a coalition with the main opposition party to form the Patriotic Alliance for Change. Many ordinary Paraguayans had become fed up of what they saw as a corrupt establishment, that failed to safeguard the poorest in a country landlocked by wealthier neighbours Argentina and Brazil, and economically dependent on its agricultural and hydroelectric power exports.
