POPSCoworkers Find They're Long Lost Brothers more: Randy, the older brother, was the one who first had a hunch they may have been related. "People are saying we look like brothers, and we go on deliveries together for the last month and a half and we keep getting it" Randy said. He had recently dug up some information about his adoption and discovered that he had a brother who was born on June 10, 1974 -- Gary's birthday. For two weeks the two kept the news to themselves, but last week they shared their story withco-workers. Owner Lisa Dow says she cried when one of the brothers told her, "I would have never found him if you didn't hire me to work here." Gary and Randy are still in disbelief. "I've been riding around with this guy for a month and a half and he's my full blooded brother," Randy said shaking his head.

POPSMount Bosavi - Habitat for 40 Newly Discovered Species "The villagers first encountered westerners in the 1950s but were still cut off from television and the cash economy; elders could recall a childhood of stone tools and the arrival of the first metal axe in the village. With the help of a translator (the local language, Kasua, is spoken by fewer than 1,000 people),"

POPSDow Jones in the past 5 years Is the most recent bounce a "dead cat bounce", or have investors simply bought up all of the cheap stocks in hopes of a better day? Time will tell. My hunch- it may be OK for the super-rich, but Wal St. and Main St. are stil miles away.

POPSHunch, they think we'll love it It's a cruel world out there. Coin-flipping, I Ching consultation, closing your eyes and jumping, postponing the inevitable, Rock-Paper-Scissors, and asking your sister are all time-honored means of coming to a decision -- and yet we think there's room for one more: Hunch.

POPSHow to Improve Your Self-Control Some people seem to find it easy to resist temptation while others can be relied on to always yield to self-gratification. To a certain extent we have to accept our starting point on the self-control sliding scale and do the best we can with it. 3. How to improve your self-control: Global processing. This means trying to focus on the wood rather than the trees. Abstract reasoning. This means trying to avoid considering the specific details of the situation at hand in favour of thinking about how actions fit into an overall framework - being philosophical. High-level categorisation. This means thinking about high-level concepts rather than specific instances. Any long-term project, whether in business, academia or elsewhere can easily get bogged down by focusing too much on the minutiae of everyday processes and forgetting the ultimate goal.

POPSOn the US search for Bin Laden and Pakistan Pashtuns suffered heavy casualties in the bombing campaign of 2001. They resent the recent Predator attacks that are resulting in civilian casualties. As a result, the $25 million reward on Osama’s head has failed to elicit cooperation leading to the capture of the Al Qaeda leader.

POPSIs a 'Dark Force' Pushing the Universe Apart? Astronomers now recognize that the eventual fate of the universe is inextricably tied to the presence of dark energy and dark matter. The current standard model for cosmology describes a universe that is 70 percent dark energy, 25 percent dark matter, and only 5 percent normal matter.

POPSThe Middle Swings Left this Year I was discussing this with Kmcolo, and this seems to bear out some of my hunch. It would appear that the Republican Party is polarizing in the primaries, rather than gaining strength as it did in the past. It would appear that only the core party faithfull are turning out for the primaries. This is especially striking in Michigan, because there was no functional Democratic primary. (Their delegates got suspended) This should bring up independent numbers voting GOP since it was pretty much that or stay home. Given this, it looks like the independents in Michigan are pretty squarely waiting to vote for the ultimate Democrat nominee. Romney, Huckabee and Ron Paul are all riding high on a wave of pessimism that drives away normal voters and leaves only extremists.

POPS Too Much Romney-Bashing UPDATED A quick thought on the GOP debate: During an immigration back-and-forth, McCain said (something like): "You can spend your entire fortune mischaracterizing my immigration position but that still won't make what you say true." After Romney complained about getting misquoted by the AP, McCain chimed in with: "If you keep changing your positions you're going to get misquoted every now and then." At one point he said, seemingly apropos of nothing: "I just want to say: Governor Romney--we disagree on many things, but you are the candidate of change." He had trouble suppressing his laughter as he said this. I could see the pundits proclaiming Mitt the loser since he took so much incoming fire. But my hunch is that it won't play that way among voters.

POPSDems place their faith in Mike Huckabee I'm particularly amused by the fact that he wants to make all pornography illegal - but is absolutely opposed to the slightest sanction against hate speech. For a person of the slightest intellectual capacity, that level of cognitive dissonance could cause serious damage.

POPSNobel Peace Prize Al Gore-5/2 Burmese Sangha-5/1? Award Burmese Monks Nobel Peace Prize online petition http://www.petitiononline.com/nobel007/petition.html "What has Algore done for world peace? My "vote" goes for the Burmese Sangha" The dignified spirituality, the refusal of alms, the passive submission to torture and even death at the hands of a jackbooted military—those wily sangha are pulling every cheap stunt in the Peace Prize playbook. The smart money still says Gore will win, but what chance does a former vice president of the United States—one who, while more or less running environmental policy for President Clinton, yapped endlessly about the problem and sacrificed not a penny of political capital to help solve it—have against thousands of bald-headed guys waving empty bowls over their heads?

POPSFed’s efforts to calm markets not over basically, what they are saying is that as the market wakes up to the poor lending of the last 10 years, the fed can basically only provide short-term liquidity, but cannot do anything about fundamental insolvency of the counterparties involved in the large-scale mortgage-bond markets.
