POPSTrains Accident Statistics Train accidents happen for many reasons. Railroad crossings may be littered with debris, rail lines may be obstructed, mechanism failure, or simple human error can be at fault when a train derails or slams into a car. Whenever there is a train wreck, serious personal injuries can occur due to the massive bulk and weight of trains. The extensive damage caused by train and railroad accidents can cause great losses of property and human life. In a statistical study released by the Department of Transportation’s (DOT) Federal Railroad Administration (FRA), the administration found that there are 2,547 train accidents annually.

POPSTo Err is Human: Institute of Medicine report on reducing preventable medical errors Sadly, it's now 10 years after its release, and most of its recommendations have not been heeded. More: To Err Is Human asserts that the problem is not bad people in health care--it is that good people are working in bad systems that need to be made safer. Comprehensive and straightforward, this book offers a clear prescription for raising the level of patient safety in American health care. It also explains how patients themselves can influence the quality of care that they receive once they check into the hospital. This book will be vitally important to federal, state, and local health policy makers and regulators, health professional licensing officials, hospital administrators, medical educators and students, health caregivers, health journalists, patient advocates--as well as patients themselves.

POPSNew Supreme Court Justice Sotomayor questions corporate personhood Wow. What a fantastic thing it would be to have the whole "corporate personhood" thing reexamined. Especially since "corporate personhood" arose via dictum in Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad — it was never argued as a legal matter before the court, it was merely asserted as an "oh, by the way".

POPSRobot Teaches Itself to Smile To begin teaching the robot, the researchers stuck Einstein in front of a mirror and instructed the robot to “body babble” by contorting its face into random positions. A video camera connected to facial recognition software gave the robot feedback: When it made a movement that resembled a “real” expression, it received a reward signal.

The Hurt Locker is a riveting, suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s most unrecognized heroes: the technicians of the bomb squad, who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places. Three members of the Army’s elite Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) squad battle insurgents and each other as they seek out and disarm a wave of roadside bombs on the streets of Baghdad -- in order to try and make the city a safer place for Iraqis and Americans alike. Their mission is clear - protect and save - but it’s anything but easy, for the margin of error on a war-zone bomb is zero. A thrilling and heart-thumping look at the effects of combat and danger on the human psyche,

POPSMissouri lawmaker on child hunger: ‘Hunger can be a positive motivator’ She’s got it figured out! Hunger brings families closer together! How fortunate I was in my youth to go hungry, and I didn’t even appreciate it. Evidently, if I had never gone to bed hungry I may not have ever experienced the loving family that I was a part of. But, now I see the error of my ways. One commenter pointed out that she is wearing a cross around her neck as living proof that Christianity died on the cross. “Advocates of capitalism are very apt to appeal to the sacred principles of liberty which are embodied in one maxim: the fortunate must not be restrained in the exercise of tyranny over the unfortunate” - - Bertrand Russell.

POPSCriminals traced by text message grammar More: Scientists are now building up a database of text messages donated by volunteers to look at distinctive differences in style and language between individuals, which can be used to analyse anonymous messages from potential suspects. The researchers have collected around 8,000 text messages from almost 1,000 members of the public… "Pairs of text messages by the same author are going to be more alike. And where you get groups of people who text one another a lot, or pairs of people, their language becomes more similar. We're moving away from human-based expertise and opinion to a method which will make it easier to discuss things like error rates."

POPSSwine Flu may be human error The World Health Organization received the study last weekend and is reviewing it. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta has received the report and has decided there is no evidence to support Gibbs’s conclusion. See how quickly and decisively the CDC squashes the possibility? For a virus that has killed 61 and infected 5,251 people in 30 countries, without the origin being determined, I think maybe they should not be so quick to dismiss.

POPSScientist to WHO: Swine Flu Was Man-Made in Lab It was man-made, says leading viral scientist. This is not a conspiracy theory anymore, nor can putting "human error" in the title cloak that it also could have been a stealth experimental release by some persons or entity (to justify more global governance, which is exactly what the CFR is now applauding about the Swine Flu ). If it is "human error", then prove it, and hold the one's legally responsible and imprisoned for causing international panic, some deaths under the laws negligence. If it was deliberate, then its "terrorism". The precautions and admissions of mis-shipped pathogens in the news last year do not suggest mere "error" but deliberate design and the creation of alibis simultaneously.

POPSUsing pot as a teen may affect thinking The researcher said he believes illicit use of THC during adolescence produces persistent changes in the brain that sensitize females to the negative effects of THC later in life. A group of 12 female rats, 35 days old -- an age equivalent to that of human teenagers about to undergo puberty -- began to be exposed to THC chronically for 40 days. Half had had their ovaries removed when they were 30 days old, half retained their ovaries. The day after the 12 females finished the period of exposure, they underwent an extensive training process consisting of pressing colored keys in a specific sequence in order to obtain food pellets. The female rats went from a 25 percent error rate to 50 percent error rate, Winsauer told United Press International. The study was presented at Experimental Biology 2009 as part of the scientific program of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics in New Orleans.
