How to Use First Names
Kore7
by Kore7  4-7-2007    2
In the world of influence, names are money. Schoolteachers know it. Bartenders know it. Salesmen know it. Very polite children know it. These people have figured it out. A name well used makes any person feel seen. When someone uses my name, I know that he has at least considered me in some fashion, that my presence has registered. It conveys a substratum of intimacy, a level of connection, a sense that life does not have to be lived in a torpid fog of anonymous comings and goings.

How to Brood
Kore7
by Kore7  12-29-2007    6
Tom Chiarella might be my favorite author to clip, not only because of the originality of his topics but because of his pithy, honest terseness and his wry approach to modern life. Now pardon me while I mull over what all this implies about me, Clipmarks, and the entire history of humanity alone in a corner somewhere.... Some people are smart. They stay away. You might call this respect. Others are pathological in their worry. "Why so glum?" they ask. Or "How you doing, big guy?" And just because they won't honor my need to be alone in public, to stretch around inside the muscle of my worry, or respect the fact that a smile is sometimes just a tiresome, mawkish mask, I flat-out lie. I tell them I'm doing fine. Jim Dandy. Then I smile and wait for a good moment to turn back to my troubles -- which now include the fact that some jackass thinks it's okay to call me "big guy."

Why Eye Contact Matters
Kore7
by Kore7  4-10-2007    5
And for the one who's being looked at, eye contact sends a message, signaling acknowledgment, connection, and attention, signaling something, I suppose, like empathy. Being seen is, on some level, being felt. It's nice to be acknowledged.

Tips from Thomas Edison on Living Optimistically
Djiezes
by Djiezes  7-16-2008    3
Dr. Martin Seligman, the director of the University of Pennsylvania’s Positive Psychology Center, and author of Learned Optimism, has studied optimists and pessimists for 25 years. His research has found: Optimists * Less depression than pessimists * Better results than pessimists in most areas of life * Longer lifespan * Healthier than pessimists * Better than pessimists at work and in school * More friends and better social lives Pessimists * More depression than optimists * Inertia rather than activity in the face of setbacks * Feels bad subjectively–blue, down worried, anxious * Poor physical health * Self-fulfilling; pessimists don’t persist in the face of challenges and thus fail more frequently, even when success is attainable * Even when pessimists turn out to be right, they still feel worse than deluded optimists

Add a Clipmarks (or Google Reader) sidebar
Djiezes
by Djiezes  5-27-2008    4
And this also works for clipmarks. Just bookmark http://m.clipmarks.com/ and check the box "Load this bookmark in the sidebar". Upon clicking the bookmark, it will open clipmarks mobile in your firefox sidebar, which fits perfectly. You can also add other clipmarks-mobile sidebars like users / tags / search / folders(clipcasts) / ... . You just have to browse to the page you want to use in your sidebar & bookmark it using the described procedure. A little example (replace my name with your user name to personalize): (my) Personal page http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/ (my) Clippers Mix http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/clippers/mix/ Folders / Clipcasts: http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/clipcast/Literature http://m.clipmarks.com/clipper/Djiezes/clipcast/Scientology Tags: http://m.clipmarks.com/tag/linux Search: http://m.clipmarks.com/search/linux ... How to Listen
Kore7
by Kore7  6-15-2007    5
Push this listening thing. Even for a day. When asked for your opinion, say, "I don't know." You'll baffle people, sure, but maybe that's a good thing. You can be the Quiet Man. Let them try to figure you out. I'll add: at the same time, don't be mysterious to the point of inscrutability. Share your thoughts when appropriate. If you've practiced listening to others, you'll have reserves of knowledge and experience to draw upon, which tends to compel people to listen to you in turn.

How To Think
Kore7
by Kore7  3-22-2008    5
With the internet saturating ever deeper into our busy lives, humans are navigating uncharted informational and attentional waters these days. MIT neuroengineer, Ed Boyden, put together these rules of thumb to managing brain resources in an age of complexity. 7. Make your mistakes quickly. You may mess things up on the first try, but do it fast, and then move on. Document what led to the error so that you learn what to recognize, and then move on. Get the mistakes out of the way. As Shakespeare put it, "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt." (Via Kottke.)
