POPSHillary Clinton: US Wants Israel To Stop Building West Bank Settlements 'Forever' But Clinton has had to do a lot of explaining since last Saturday, when she stood with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem and praised his offer to limit settlement construction without halting it. Clinton has since tried to clarify the remarks, saying that the Israeli offer does not got far enough. Still, she has indicated that the Palestinians should resume negotiations with Israel without a full settlement halt as they demand.

POPSModern Epic Tales: Unintended Consequence
Kill 300,000 pigs in Egypt used to help eat garbage and kept in "herds" generally fewer than ten pigs to "control" swine flu and what do you get? The good possibility of some other disease breaking out because of piling up garbage and an ensuing growth in rodent and fly populations. Swine flu developed within industrially grown herds of thousands of pigs in unsanitary conditions, which is a formula for creating the chance of a disease breakout. The unintended consequence of the use of pigs kept in small numbers by families who collected and recycled garbage for income? A safer Cairo? Why'd they really do it? They have had 30+ deaths from avian flu arising from "farming" too many chickens in unsanitary conditions for the world poultry market. Had to look good at something but not threaten the income of poultry traders. Add to this that the garbage pickers are minority Coptic Christians and the government probably thought no one would care. But now the garbage is piling up

POPSGermany 'not silent' on stabbing
Ms Sherbini's husband was attacked by the assailant as he tried to defend his wife and was also accidentally shot by German police. He is in hospital in critical condition. This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked Thomas Steg German government spokesman The Egyptian media have expressed outrage, asking how the incident was allowed to happen and dubbing Ms Sherbini "the martyr of the Hijab", in reference to her Islamic headscarf. The German government was criticised for what was seen to be a muted reaction. On Tuesday, spokesman Thomas Steg defended the government's reaction, saying Germany had "not been silent", and that early details about the case had not been sufficiently clear for a "spontaneous reaction". "This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked," he said. He added that Chancellor Merkel would discuss the incident with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at this week's Group of Eight summit in It

POPS Obama To Speak To Muslim World - Again Those sources were unable to explain why the president felt impelled to address the Muslim people again, or why Egypt was chosen, when US relations with President Hosni Mubarak are strained over the latter's resentment of Washington's rapprochement with Tehran and its criticism of Egypt's human rights conduct. The White House spokesman said: "I think in many ways, this is the heart of the Arab world." The address is intended for the entire Muslim world, not simply Arab Muslims. It is part of Mr. Obama's continuing effort to reach out to Muslims, as he did in a speech he gave in Turkey last month. Two high-ranking US delegations which visited Cairo in the last ten days failed to convince Mubarak that the US president's plans to engage Iran in diplomacy was not at the expense of Arab interests. After Germany, Obama will then join commemorations marking the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy as guest of President Nicolas Sarkozy.

POPSEgypt's Swineocide largely due to their superstition about eating pork, now the swine flu provides their pretext and justification (even though it is entirely irrational and unrelated to swine flu). Pig farmers will suffer the loss of their entire business from this government tyranny.

POPSFisk: "So I asked the UN secretary general . . " continues (full at source): After killing hundreds of women and children, Israel was the good guy again, by declaring a unilateral ceasefire that Hamas was certain to break. But Obama will be smiling on Tuesday. Was not this the reason, after all, why Israel suddenly wanted a truce? Egypt's objections may be theatre – the US spent £18m last year training Egyptian security men to stop arms smuggling into Gaza and since the US bails out Egypt's economy, ignores the corruption of its regime and goes on backing Hosni Mubarak, there's sure to be a "compromise" very soon.

POPSGaza: The Wider War It is welcome news for al-Qaida. Indeed, Osama bin Laden has frequently characterised the alliance between the United States and Israel in ideological terms as a "crusader-Zionist" assault on Islam. In this light, the great advantage of the Gaza war of 2008-09 to Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri and their associates is that it revalidates and reinvigorates the Zionist dimension of their worldview before a global audience. The implications of that are both complex and uncertain, but it is certain that the Gaza war will be used repeatedly in the years to come to implant and reinforce the al-Qaida message.

POPS Iran Urges Assassinations Worldwide In the editorial, Shariatmadari recounted a story from a 13 year old teenager who had gone to the front lines during the Iran-Iraq war with the permission of the mullahs’ current Supreme Leader, Ali Khamanei, and was later killed. Shariatmadari compared him and other teenagers who were sent to mine fields by the regime, to “Ghassem,” a young man who fought alongside the revered Shiite Imam Hussein in 680 and died. Today, this war is in Gaza. As the Imam used to say, with the revitalization of true Islam of Prophet Muhammad, the Great Satan roared and issued a call to all the other big and small devils. … Now that the war in Gaza is the point of conflict for all of Islam against all infidels, why should the act of confronting the Zionists only be limited to the borders of occupied Palestine? Are the people of Gaza not representing the entire Muslim world in their fight with the Zionists?

POPSProtests, Anger Over Israeli Assault Spread Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak's office released a statement condemning the Israeli ground offensive, and foreign minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said some of the blame belongs at the feet of the U.N. Security Council, which failed to approve a statement overnight calling for an immediate cease-fire. Abul Gheit said the Security Council's silence "was interpreted by Israel as a green light." U.N. delegates said it was the United States that had blocked the statement from being approved. "We need an immediate cease-fire. The blame game can continue later afterwards, but this dangerous moment I think requires us to act," said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. Israeli and U.S. officials, however, insist that any cease-fire must be "durable." And military analysts say that suggests that Israel intends to weaken Hamas further before seriously pursuing a cessation of hostilities.

POPS"The Persians Are Trying To Devour The Arab States" Recent strain between Cairo and Teheran has grown as several demonstrations in Iran called for the hanging of the Egyptian leader. The Iranian FARS news service reported that participants in recent student demonstrations outside the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Teheran also chanted "Death to Israel" and "Death to America" and burned an Israeli flag.

POPSOlmert Rules Out Truce Talks With Hamas The Israeli military has struck hard in recent weeks against Hamas and other armed groups in Gaza. With troops appearing to make substantial gains, Olmert told his Cabinet there were no plans to slow down. "Operations against terrorists will continue as they have been conducted for many months," Olmert said. "There is no other way to describe what is happening in the Gaza Strip except as a true war between the Israeli army and terror groups." He said Israel would continue to allow humanitarian aid into Gaza to protect the area's civilians. Israel sealed its borders with Gaza immediately after Hamas violently wrested control of the territory in June. Israel, which considers Hamas a terrorist group, has cut off most trade and reduced fuel shipments to the area. Palestinians claim east Jerusalem and the West Bank, areas captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war, as part of their future state. Some 450,000 Israelis live in these areas.
