POPSA Win For the Good Guys The SPLC was victorious in their civil trial against the IKA. Good news in light of all the negativity with the economy, racial threats after the election and the stripping of rights in California. Where there are people of conscience there is hope.

POPSWho was Walter Annenberg? Obama and Ayers served on a board funded by Annenberg. Was Annenberg a terrorist sympathizer, rejected by the Right? Hardly!

POPSbuddha baby flicks "much of Buddhist practice is about the refrain from excess - it is, after all, called "the Middle Path" - that is, it consists of stepping back from the entanglements of emotional attachment and aggressive desire, and understanding how to free oneself from these things by being more mindful and aware of them. Its teachings attempt to make us more human by questioning our usual human reactions."

POPSCan the Martian arctic support extreme life? While the possibility for ET seems to grow with new extremophile discoveries on Earth, the truth is there's no evidence that life ever evolved on Mars or if it even exists today. But if there were past or present life on the red planet - a big if - scientists speculate it would likely be similar to some extreme life on Earth - microscopic and hardy, capable of withstanding colder-than-Antarctica temperatures and low pressures.

POPSYellowstone virus intrigues researchers The virus eats the bacteria in the hot springs. Known as a bacteriophage, or 'phage' from a group of viruses that eats only bacteria, researchers, are intrigued as to how they evolved to be able to survive in the hot springs. They can travel in steam. Bacteriophages are considered to be the most widely distributed and diverse entities in the biosphere. It is also believed they infect up to 70% of marine bacteria. They have been used as an alternative to antibiotics in what was the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, and have been seen as a hope against some drug resistant bacteria. So far tests with MRSA have not been promising, as the virus that attacks MRSA, also contains the same toxin.

POPSPascal's Wager - "Jesus said to him, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind."--Matthew 22:37 MKJV Faith isn't blind acceptance of tradition. True Christian faith is an act of the intellect and of the will, as well as the heart. It springs from realizing that human intellect can never explain everything, and can never know everything. There are always facts of existence that are beyond our grasp, and that is where God is. To believe otherwise strikes me as the height of arrogance. For far better thoughts on this than mine, start here: http://www.apologetics.org/articles/pascal.html

POPSOh Come On! This is outrageous! One of the reasons I am balking at buying a house is because nowadays you also have to shop around for neighborhoods that are not so g-d authoritarian in trying to dictate what kind of symbols and where neighbors may express themselves on what is actually their own property. I guess if they can outlaw smoking in private homes, this is the next logical step. At least in an apartment I know that I am limited, but on my own property I hope to be able to express myself any danged way I please! Someone please tell me how anyone can claim that the symbol for "peace" is a "symbol of satan"? This is ludicrous!

POPSChristian Gay Sex Scandal: Leader Haggard Steps Down Amid Affair Inquiry "They want to protect the sanctity of marriage and I am trying to figure out what that means because they are not doing a good job," Jones said of anti-gay marriage proponents. "To have someone in such a high profile position preaching against them and doing opposite behind other people's backs is hypocritical."

POPSThe Open Society and Its Enemies - Karl Popper Click the sources for the extracts (a lot!). "If in this book harsh words are spoken about some of the greatest among the intellectual leaders of mankind, my motive is not, I hope, the wish to belittle them. It springs rather from my conviction that, if our civilization is to survive, we much break with the habit of deference to great men. Great men may make great mistakes; and as the book tries to show, some of the greatest leaders of the past supported the perennial attack on freedom and reason. Their influence, too rarely challenged, continues to mislead those on whose defence civilization depends, and to divide them. The responsibility of this tragic and possibly fatal division becomes ours if we hesitate to be outspoken in our criticism of what admittedly is a part of our intellectual heritage. By reluctance to criticize some of it, we may help to destroy it all."
