POPS Uncle Sam’s Collections Continue Their Steep Drop It is ironic to say the least that Congress and the Obama administration are glorifying the idea of a “public option” that would ultimately lead to government-run health care while Treasury receipts continue to shrink. If the private health insurance market disappears, so will its taxes. To name just one example, Aetna’s recorded income tax expense on its financial statements for 2005-2008 (including state and local taxes) averaged roughly $900 million per year. Put the company’s health insurance segment out of business, and a large portion of those taxes would stop coming in, digging the country’s and various states’ debt holes that much deeper. The establishment press has paid very little attention to fiscal 2009’s drop of 19.5% in receipts from economic activity, so I expect similar treatment of October’s continuation of the trend. It would appear that they don’t want any unsettling news getting in the way of the statist agenda.

POPSThankfulness Tree This is the second year we have had a Thankfulness Tree. I have some fake branches that I put in a big vase to hold the leaves. I went to a scrapbooking store and used their die cut machine to make many many leaves from paper. If you buy the paper there, you can use the machines for free. I punched holes in the leaves to hang on the branches without having to mess with string or glue or hangers of any sort. I place the leaves in a bowl with a pen so any guests that come during November can write something they are thankful for on a leaf and hang it up. On Thanksgiving we read the leaves and we give thanks for all the friends and family that have come to our house. Then I put the leaves in a bag and date it so we can read them in future years too. Yesterday, my daughter wrote that she was thankful for "being born" and for "being in this family." I am so thankful for those things too. Go, get your thankfulness on!

Indeed, Zeldovich and his colleagues identified one popular web application that sanitized data in more than 1,400 places (but still had about 60 security holes). They also, however, identified a feature that web application security checks usually had in common: "Namely," Zeldovich says, "it's that the same data is being handled in all these hundreds of places."

While the vulnerability is in an IE component, there is an attack vector for Firefox users as well. The reason is that .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installs a “Windows Presentation Foundation” plug-in in Firefox. Now, Microsoft’s security folks are actually recommending that Firefox users uninstall the buggy add-on: For Firefox users with .NET Framework 3.5 installed, you may use “Tools”-> “Add-ons” -> “Plugins”, select “Windows Presentation Foundation”, and click “Disable" This introduction of vulnerabilities in a competing browser is a colossal embarrassment for Microsoft. Kent Conrad (D., N.D.) deep-sixed by asking the CBO to tell the truth about its impact on health-care costs. To avoid the fate of the House bill and achieve a veneer of fiscal sensibility, the Senate did three things: It omitted inconvenient truths, it promised that future Congresses will make tough choices to slow entitlement spending, and it dropped the hammer on the middle class. One inconvenient truth is the fact that Congress will not allow doctors to suffer a 24% cut in their Medicare reimbursements. Senate Democrats chose to ignore this reality and rely on the promise of a cut to make their bill add up. Taking note of this fact pushes the total cost of the bill well over $1 trillion and destroys any pretense of budget balance.
