POPSJustice of the Peace Bardwell is wrong that mixed-race children suffer because they are mixed-race
More: These desires and questions don't change just because your parents are from different racial backgrounds. And they certainly don't get easier if your parents are from different faiths, different parts of the world, different ... you name it. So Mr. Bardwell is just simply ridiculous if he thinks he's thinking about the children. Yes, children go through tough times, but we are resilient. Even more important, we learn from our challenges -- and I think we become better people. Because I am of mixed race, I cannot simply stick to stereotypes of how one racial or ethnic group behave. I must look at each individual independent of what I think -- and I think that assessment happens when people look at me and try to figure out what I'm all about. This process of not jumping to conclusions, of really viewing people on some deeper level, makes me a better person. And I think it could work for you, Mr. Bardwell.

POPSAutumn Leaves In Japan Colorful leaves (koyo) are to the Japanese autumn what cherry blossoms are to spring. The viewing of autumn leaves has been a popular activity in Japan for centuries and today draws large numbers of travelers to famous spots. Each year, starting in mid September, the "koyo front" slowly moves southwards from the northern island of Hokkaido until it reaches the lower elevations of central and southern Japan towards the end of November.

POPSThe 60-Year-Old Dispute Between Japan and Russia MOSCOW, April 14 - Japan pressed Russia on Monday to end a territorial dispute over a chain of Pacific islands which has prevented the two countries from formally ending World War II hostilities and strengthening ties. The dispute over the islands, known as the Southern Kuriles in Russia and the Northern Territories in Japan, has overshadowed Russian-Japanese relations for more than 60 years. Japan says a resolution of the dispute would attract a new wave of Japanese investors to Russia.

POPSInternal World Bank Study: Biofuel Caused Food Crisis The news comes at a critical point in the world's negotiations on biofuels policy. Leaders of the G8 industrialised countries meet next week in Hokkaido, Japan, where they will discuss the food crisis and come under intense lobbying from campaigners calling for a moratorium on the use of plant-derived fuels. It will also put pressure on the British government, which is due to release its own report on the impact of biofuels, the Gallagher Report. The Guardian has previously reported that the British study will state that plant fuels have played a "significant" part in pushing up food prices to record levels. Although it was expected last week, the report has still not been released. The leaked World Bank study disputes that: "Rapid income growth in developing countries has not led to large increases in global grain consumption and was not a major factor responsible for the large price increases."

POPS"Number Of People Facing Hunger Is Growing" PM Brown Elizabeth Stuart, a spokesman for the Oxfam anti-poverty group, hailed Mr. Zoellick's call to action and said the switch to biofuels in the U.S. and Europe has been a major cause of raising food prices. Rice prices have surged 75 percent over the past two months while wheat prices have more than doubled in the past year, Mr. Zoellick said. In Bangladesh, a 2-kilogram bag of rice costs about half of the daily income of a poor family. The high prices are not only increasing hunger and fueling food riots and social unrest in 33 countries, he said, they are stunting the physical and intellectual development of children. European Union Development Commissioner Louis Michel warned that Africa faces a new disaster if prices continue to rise. "A world food crisis is emerging, less visible than the oil crisis, but with the potential effect of real economic and humanitarian tsunami in Africa," he said.
