POPSFour things about the Hofstra rape/recant story More: 4) Honestly, this case just makes me so sad. I think it's highly likely that something bad happened that night, whether or not she literally consented. It's hard to imagine something like this happening if all the parties had engaged in direct sexual communication and sought enthusiastic, affirmative consent - not just lack of protest. For me, this whole mess just demonstrates how badly we need a real sea-change in how we talk about and view sex in our culture. Here's where a conclusion should go, but this column has none. Because this case has none. And this crisis has none. At least none so far. But we're working on it. Right?

POPS "Obama's 95% Illusion" Given that he wasn't clear on the actual rate changes involved, I asked, "but which type of tax would go down?" He insisted that under Obama's plan, income taxes would be lower, as well as capital gains taxes on start up businesses and small entrepreneurs (though the capital gains tax would otherwise increase). SHORTLY AFTER my exchange with Plouffe, I was listening to David Axelrod, Obama's senior strategist, and I decided to put the question to him slightly differently: "Let's say you're making $50,000 a year," I posited. "What taxes would you see go lower under the Obama plan?" I queried as to whether that money would come in the form of a check, or a lower rate. "You would see a reduction in your taxes, in the taxes that you pay," he insisted. After further questioning, he added, "The mechanism for it has to do with deferring part of the withholding taxes, but you should talk to our budget folks on that."

POPSPresidential Debate Moderators Announced The Commission on Presidential Debates announced the moderators for the three 2008 presidential and vice presidential debates Tuesday morning. Each of the debates, except the second presidential debate, will be divided into eight, 10 minute segments devoted to a single topic. During that time the candidates will be able to engage each other in direct exchanges. Each of the debates will be 90 minutes long.

POPSEmanuel To Negotiate Three Presidential, One Vice President Debate With McCain Obama campaign manager David Plouffe on Saturday tapped close Obama friend Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) to negotiate debate details with the McCain team and the Commission on Presidential Debates. The bi-partisan commission has had debates on the drawing board for quite some time. While there is nothing to preclude the campaigns from having more, sponsored by others, Plouffe in his letter said that was unlikely.

POPSLetting the President Say What the legislation is likely to do even sooner is put the CIA's secret-prison program back online. That's right: back online. Although when he revealed its existence, the President left the impression he had suspended the program in response to a June Supreme Court ruling, that's not so. What neither he nor Congress nor the CIA has publicly acknowledged is that the agency halted the "special interrogations" in its secret prisons more than nine months ago.
