POPSLast Safe Haven for Savings Threatened!
Manny Levine, CEO and founder of "Snooze, Inc", the nation's largest mattress manufacturing company, said the move was "nothing more than a power play by the current administration to get in bed with our customers and control how they handle their money!" White House Spokesman Robert Gibbs said the move was an emergency measure to combat "hoarding" on behalf of American Taxpayers, "who are not doing their part to bring back the sagging economy!" Gibbs said people, as well as corporations, were holding on to a large portion of recent stimulus checks, and not putting the handouts back into the economy. "The only people spending money," he said forcefully, " is the government! This is un american, and detrimental to this administration's long term goal of control and reshaping of the economy and our economic system." Bennie Emanuel, one of the 5 Emanuel brothers advising Obama said," our radical changeover of the American Way will fail unless every single taxpayer goes broke! Onl

POPSArtist exposes his soul...and his mother's stuff This artist comes at his work from a very interesting place. I love readymades and in general, works that contain commercial products like the toothpaste tubes in the photo. The exhibit on the surface seems curious and somewhat whimsical like a Duchamp but from what the review says its far more intense. I'm looking forward to seeing it but at the same time I wonder if I will feel uncomfortable peering so deeply into his (and his mother's) life, soul, pain, etc...even though they've invited me to do so.

Pulling the TARP over taxpayers' eyes By: Michael Barone Last fall, former Treasury Secretary Hank Paulson told shocked Americans that the $700 billion TARP had to be passed immediately but not to worry because taxpayers would eventually make money on the investments as banks and other institutions getting bailout money paid it back. To the contrary, Barofsky said, not only are banks hoarding TARP funds, it is "very unlikely" that most of the TARP money will ever be repaid, let alone turn a profit. The hastily passed bill included minimal reporting requirements, so a third of all TARP recipients admit they used the money to repay loans, merge with other banks, and even purchase more mortgage-backed securities from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac - the two institutions at the heart of the housing market collapse. Some companies are even using TARP to pay off other government loans in what auditors call "bailout arbitrage." And it's all perfectly legal.

POPSPeople Power! SILENCE is complicity. Our president’s refusal to take a forthright moral stand on the side of the Iranian freedom marchers is read in Tehran as a blank check for the current regime. The fundamentalist junta has begun arresting opposition figures, with regime mouthpieces raising the prospect of the death penalty. Inevitably, there are claims that dissidents have been “hoarding weapons and explosives.” Foreign media reps are under house arrest. Cellphone frequencies are jammed. Students are killed and the killings disavowed. And our president is “troubled,” but doesn’t believe we should “meddle” in Iran’s internal affairs. (Meddling in Israel’s domestic affairs is just fine, though.) We just turned our backs on freedom. Again. … For decades, Washington policymakers from both parties have prodded Iranians to throw off their shackles. Last Friday, millions of Iranians stood up. And we’re standing down. That isn’t diplomacy. It’s treachery

POPSPsychology behind Hoarding in Gamers
More: "In collecting these digital gems, are we just filling ourselves with an empty sense of accomplishment when, in fact, we’ve accomplished nothing? Not necessarily, says Dr. Cheryl K. Olson, co-director at the Center for Mental Health and Media at Massachusetts General Hospital Department of Psychiatry, and author of the 2007 book, Grand Theft Childhood. “People work for intangible rewards all the time,” she says. “Money and love, for example. A paycheck may seem ‘solid,’ but it represents an abstraction. And what’s more abstract than earning an ‘A’ in philosophy?... Small things can be quite rewarding. A smile from a cute girl may be a small thing, but it can make a teenage boy’s week.” And the months (for some, maybe weeks) it took you to earn the Seriously 2.0 Achievement in Gears of War 2? “Delayed rewards are often more valued. Over years of formal schooling, we learn to delay gratification,” Olson says. If you really need more encouragement or justification for your

POPSGathering storm The acquiring of and failure to discard seemingly useless possessions, causing significant clutter, distress, and impairment to basic living activities. That's the definition mental health researchers have basically agreed on for compulsive hoarding and cluttering. They also agree that hoarding behaviors cut across ethnicity, gender, and socioeconomic status, and although the elderly tend to hoard more than the young, they certainly don't have a monopoly. Hoarders can often be identified in suburban areas by the possessions spilling out of their homes, while in cities like San Francisco, they are often concentrated in smaller, concealed dwellings. According to a just-released citywide task force report on hoarding, there are an estimated 12,000 to 25,000 hoarders living in San Francisco.

POPSObama Spurs Anxiety On Societal Collapse And as you already well know, both firearm and ammunition sales have skyrocketed, and more popular guns and the ammunition for them cannot be had in many locations, at any price, due to scarcity and hoarding. Individual families are preparing, but they also know many people aren't, and so they are stocking up quietly. They do not want to become targets for those who either can't afford to prepare, or who refuse to out of some variation of "it can't happen here" groupthink. Incidentally, Atlas Shrugged, which was written by an author who saw communism take over her country and the damage it wrought, is also once again selling well on Amazon, at #37.

POPSOil Speculation: It's Back: And This Time, It Really Is Making Oil More Expensive ($12 a barrel higher, to be precise) than the spot price - a scenario futures traders call a "contango" market. (The opposite scenario - spot prices higher than futures prices - is known as "backwardation.") "The steepening of the contango has opened up carry-trade arbitrage opportunities that are slow to be closed due to constrained credit conditions," Goldman Sachs wrote in a recent research report. Translation: this is a great time for investors to be hoarding oil. Today's market is giving Goldman clients and other well-heeled investors an opportunity to buy oil in the spot market for $50 a barrel, sell it forward in the futures market for $62, and then pocket the $12-a-barrel difference, less storage costs.

POPSScience and Technology is our Future not the Auto Industry Mr. Lyons brings up an interesting point. We are throwing away a lot of money at banking and the automotive industry, neither of which shows much interest in changing the methods that got America into this mess. That money could and should be better spent on the one industry sector that has repeatedly brought the world to our doorsteps. The market will either make or break the automotive industry depending on how they adapt to what Americans want. The financial industry will find a way to survive and hoarding their share of the bailout money is not the way to do it. America’s brainpower is where our future lies. Science and technology needs a greater influx of scientists and engineers and that can only come from a better system of education. Once again America is getting its priorities wrong.
