Immortal Invaders Infect World's Oceans
Mohir
by Mohir  12-8-2008    1
We aren't in any immediate danger of knock-on effects either, as the jetsetting jellyfish-ettes seem to be integrating quite harmlessly into their new homes (though some shrimp might disagree). The rather damp phoenix-stylings of the hydrozoan have obviously made them a hot topic in genetics, but don't expect to buy your immortality pills just yet - this is one life extension option that isn't even remotely applicable to humans.

A Diamond Bigger than Earth Discovered
Mohir
by Mohir  11-19-2008    3
The diamond is actually the crystallized interior of a white dwarf – or the hot core of a star that is left over after the star uses up its nuclear fuel and dies. It is made mostly of carbon and is coated by a thin layer of hydrogen and helium gases.

Sun May Be Galactic Hitchhiker...
mugofcoffee
by mugofcoffee  9-22-2008    1
Stars could travel from deep within the interior of a galaxy to its outer edges, and might even get passed around in a "spiral arm relay," Roskar told SPACE.com. Our sun currently has an orbit near the outer edge of the galaxy. New simulation runs confirmed earlier work that showed how star orbits can remain circular despite expanding or shrinking. That counters assumptions that the gravitational tug-of-war would push and pull orbits into wilder elliptical shapes.

How to Hitchhike Across the Globe Without Leaving Your Living Room
Mohir
by Mohir  8-18-2008
The 360° World Atlas DVD lets anyone with a computer become a virtual hitchhiker, no packing or neck-craning required. Creator Everen Brown does all the hard work for you. He jets around the globe, lugging a 40-pound bag full of 600 rolls of film past airport security, and picks a picture-worthy spot. Then he takes one of the world’s last Globuscope rotational cameras (no longer in production), holds it over his head (sometimes he lies on his stomach), and waits (sometimes for hours) for the right shot. When he sees it, snapping the picture takes only a second. The lens rotates full circle, so you get to see what’s across from the Taj Mahal’s minarets too. Once Brown develops the film, he embeds the images into an interactive atlas ($69.95, www.360atlas.com) that shows off head-turning views, panorama style.

'Babelfish' to translate alien tongues could be built
Mohir
by Mohir  4-20-2008    1
But Deacon argues that all languages arise from the common goal of describing the physical world. That limits the way a language could be constructed, he concludes. An alien race could use a strange medium like scents as their language, Deacon says, but the scents would still describe objects in their world. An odour that communicates "rock" or "tree" would be analogous to our words for the same objects. So there must be an underlying universal code that can be deciphered, as in mathematics.
