POPSNew York’s Largest Mosque to Be Built Next To –- Ground Zero The building has no sign that hints at its use as a Muslim prayer space, but these modest beginnings point to a far grander vision: an Islamic center near the city’s most hallowed piece of land that would stand as one of ground zero’s more unexpected and striking neighbors. Unreal. Lest We Forget I’m a history buff. There’s a constant struggle at our house over the remote control and whether we watch what my wife and kids want, or the Discovery, TLC, or the History Channel. I won’t go into who usually wins (ask Pam), but suffice it to say we’ve added several televisions in the house. My mom instilled in me my fascination with history long ago. I think it was her way of passing onto a son, growing up ten thousand miles away from his country and family, his heritage. Around the dinner table in the Philippines her stories of my grandparents and life on the farm during the Depression and World War 2 .....

POPSKids to Meet Marx in School
These two books have now become the basis for a new documentary, entitled The People Speak, to be aired December 13th at 8pm on the History Channel. The trailer portrays the documentary as a collage of compelling one-person readings, told through the words of “ordinary” people who have struggled throughout American history against oppression. Produced by Zinn, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and Chris Moore, the documentary appears to be cloaked, ironically (given Zinn’s admitted socialist agenda), in many of the traditional ideas that were behind our founding. The verdict is still out on the doc, but it is not for the books that inspired the film as well as the educational initiative associated with it. Perhaps due to their one-sided perspective of America’s past, Zinn’s history books have largely been limited to colleges and universities, until now. In the press release announcing the broadcast, HISTORY introduced a partnership with VOICES Of A People’s History Of The United States, a no

POPSGlenn "Chicken Little" Beck, the lowest of the low. The animosity between Beck and Kelly continued to deepen. When Beck and Hattrick produced a local version of Orson Welles' "War of the Worlds" for Halloween -- a recurring motif in Beck's life and career -- Kelly told a local reporter that the bit was a stupid rip-off of a syndicated gag. The slight outraged Beck, who got his revenge with what may rank as one of the cruelest bits in the history of morning radio. "A couple days after Kelly's wife, Terry, had a miscarriage, Beck called her live on the air and says, 'We hear you had a miscarriage,' " remembers Brad Miller, a former Y95 DJ and Clear Channel programmer. "When Terry said, 'Yes,' Beck proceeded to joke about how Bruce apparently can't do anything right -- about he can't even have a baby."

POPSA Living History of the Human Spirit Coping With Disaster and archived at the US Library of Congress. In the coming months and years we will continue working to ensure that as much of the physical re-building is captured before this history is lost forever, and to tell as fully as possible our subjects’ stories " so that audiences will better understand and appreciate how people cope with the trauma of disasters. More than six years after the attacks, activity at the WTC site is increasing day by day as construction of the Freedom Tower and its sister buildings move into full swing " and our work over this time at the site has made us aware of how easy it is to miss critical events. We need your financial support to keep our cameras rolling and to expand the filming of the rebuilding of Ground Zero. POPSSwim Faster than Phelps with this Sweet Dolphin / Whale Fin I have always had a fascination with scuba diving and snorkeling. And, more recently, our 10 year old has shown some interest in masks, fins, and snorkels. And her swimming skills right now, are getting pretty close to mine already. She definitely likes being out in the water and checking things out. But, not too long ago, we saw an AMAZING new invention that can allow you to swim as fast (or faster) than Michael Phelps. And that caught our attention. Not to mention - it is a freaking cool idea. I FINALLY found it last night when scouring the web. And I had to share it with you. Happy trails!

POPSWorld's First PoW Camp? more: Ben Robinson, an archaeologist at Peterborough Museum, has been working with the Channel 4 Time Team programme to uncover the site’s history. He said: “This is a fascinating and unique site because the concept of a ‘prisoner of war camp’ did not exist before Norman Cross was built in 1797. It was an inspired experiment in taking huge numbers of enemy troops out of action, but also keeping them in as humane conditions as possible.” Although the prisoners were generally treated well, more than 1,000 inmates died from typhoid in 1800 and 1801 and a total of 1,770 died during the camp’s 17-year history. The buildings were dismantled and the site cleared after Napoleon’s defeat at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.
