S.African Indian Muslim women come out in support of 'Hijab'
quran
by quran  9-7-2009
S.African Indian Muslim women come out in support of 'Hijab' PTI 7 September 2009, 07:43am IST JOHANNESBURG: Hundreds of Indian Muslim women here have come out in support of Muslim women's right to wear 'Hijab,' a traditional headgear, worldwide. Over 500 women visitors pledged their support for an international campaign asserting Islamic tradition of wearing Hijab during a live broadcast by the Johannesburg-based radio service Channel Islam International (CII) in the mainly Indian area of Lenasia over the weekend. Muslims across the world are protesting against a ban on 'Hijab' in France. The CII gave a free scarf to every woman who voiced her support to the campaign. "Although we are fortunate to have strong constitutional support for the rights of Muslim women in South Africa to wear the Hijab, it is surprising that countries with supposedly far longer democracies are now denying this right to the extent that innocent Muslim women are now coming under attack," CII Direct

Germany 'not silent' on stabbing
foxyarse

Ms Sherbini's husband was attacked by the assailant as he tried to defend his wife and was also accidentally shot by German police. He is in hospital in critical condition. This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked Thomas Steg German government spokesman The Egyptian media have expressed outrage, asking how the incident was allowed to happen and dubbing Ms Sherbini "the martyr of the Hijab", in reference to her Islamic headscarf. The German government was criticised for what was seen to be a muted reaction. On Tuesday, spokesman Thomas Steg defended the government's reaction, saying Germany had "not been silent", and that early details about the case had not been sufficiently clear for a "spontaneous reaction". "This is an abhorrent deed, one that has left us all dismayed and shocked," he said. He added that Chancellor Merkel would discuss the incident with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak at this week's Group of Eight summit in It

Rabbi Takes Obama to School
Eaglewings
by Eaglewings  6-12-2009    2
In his almost hour-long speech, there is not a single word about Islam’s well known and checkered past. Ironically, the American president offered plenty of references to what he sees are America’s evils, such as its “colonialism” and history of slavery. “For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation,” Obama told his audience, citing a litany of American shortcomings. He failed to mention that Arab Muslims were the greatest slave traders in the history of humanity. Mr. Obama even has the unbelievable gall, when talking about the treatment of Muslim women, to condemn Western countries for attempting to stop Muslim women from using the full facial cover, or hijab. This is a symbol of Muslim subjugation of women. Obama said: “Likewise, it is important for Western countries to avoid impeding Muslim citizens from practicing religion as they see fit - for instance, by dictating what clothes a Muslim woman should

Hijab is a personal choice not state law in Turkey
Rasmus
by Rasmus  2-16-2008
In the early eighties, Iran imposed the hijab on its female citizens, while Syria banned it from schools during the same period. Syria gradually came to terms with the hijab, as the number of Syrian women who chose to wear it increased drastically during the nineties. The hijab is enforced today in Iran and Saudi Arabia, and banned in Tunisia . France banned the hijab in 2004, and far right politicians and pundits are calling for similar bans in other European countries . The Turkish parliament passed a constitutional amendment that practically repealed early constitutional provisions that allowed the Turkish government to ban the hijab from government buildings, universities, and schools. Although the lifting of the ban is not in force yet, the confrontation over this issue with secularists who control the military and the courts has already started. Secularist Turks are up in arms, protesting the new amendment .

Sharia law - British style
mickfinn
by mickfinn  1-20-2008    1
Dr Hasan, who is also a spokesman for the Muslim Council of Britain on issues of sharia law, says there is great misunderstanding of the issue in the West. He makes the distinction between the aspects of law that sharia covers: worship, penal law, and personal law. Muslim leaders in Britain are interested only in integrating personal law, he says. "Penal law is the duty of the Muslim state - it is not in the hands of any public institution like us to handle it. Only a Muslim government that believes in Islam is going to implement it. So there is no question of asking for penal law to be introduced here in the UK - that is out of the question." Despite this, Dr Hasan is open in supporting the severe punishments meted out in countries where sharia law governs the country. "Even though cutting off the hands and feet, or flogging the drunkard and fornicator, seem to be very abhorrent, once they are implemented, they become a deterrent for the whole society. "Once, just only once, if an
