POPSThe Hole at the Heart of Our Strategy ~ Mark Steyn
...to the “noble” “heroism” of suicide bombers and, indeed, objectively supporting the other side in an active war is to be regarded as just some kind of alternative lifestyle that adds to the general vibrancy of the base. Since 9/11, we have, as the Twitterers recommend, judged people by their actions " flying planes into skyscrapers, blowing themselves up in Bali nightclubs or London Tube trains, planting IEDs by the roadside in Baghdad or Tikrit. And on the whole we’re effective at responding with action of our own " taking out training camps in Afghanistan, rolling up insurgency networks in Fallujah and Ramadi, intercepting terror plots in London and Toronto and Dearborn. But we’re scrupulously non-judgmental about the ideology that drives a man to fly into a building or self-detonate on the subway, and thus we have a hole at the heart of our strategy. We use rhetorical conveniences like “radical Islam” or, if that seems a wee bit Islamophobic .......

POPSWhat does "Fascism" look like? 14 Characteristics 10. Elitism is a typical aspect of any reactionary ideology, insofar as it is fundamentally aristocratic, and aristocratic and militaristic elitism cruelly implies contempt for the weak . 11. In such a perspective everybody is educated to become a hero. 12. Since both permanent war and heroism are difficult games to play, the Ur-Fascist transfers his will to power to sexual matters. 13. Ur-Fascism is based upon a selective populism , a qualitative populism, one might say. 14. Ur-Fascism speaks Newspeak.

POPSU.S. gives Flight 93 site landowners one week to sell
The hypocrisy here is that the government is forcing these land owners to give up their property for a monument to people who gave their lives protecting US freedoms. Why the heavy-handed action when most are willing to work out a deal? I am all for honoring these victims of fate who did more than just sit in their seats and take it. They are heroes of the highest degree. Monuments are a place of pride, a physical presence where family members can mourn, remember, and actually feel they are connecting with the spirits of their loved ones. But somehow a chunk of marble just doesn’t seem to be enough of a tribute. Before long fast food restaurants and stands selling trinkets will only trivialize their memory. And how many people will visit it? How long will anyone remember? Couldn’t that $58 million be better spent elsewhere, like maybe as settlement to the victims families for our ‘caring’ governments’ lack of motivation to prevent it from happening in the first place?

POPSDoes The O'Reilly Factor Create Killers? MORE: when crimes like the shooting of Dr. Tiller occur, Mr. O'Reilly bears a strong responsibility. He has used his great influence to create a climate of hatred in the parts of the American right, a hatred which is naturally likely to bubble over into extreme violence now and then. The Tiller and Tennessee shootings are the logical consequences of buying into O'Reilly's dehumanizing rhetoric. If those that disagree with us politically become monsters and murderers, shooting them can seem an act of great heroism. And it is O'Reilly, more than any other conservative host, who crafts the images of liberals and "abortionists" as monsters.

POPSA Hero’s More Than a Sandwich FTA: The point to all this is that you do not turn anyone into a hero simply by calling him one. All you really accomplish is to so totally cheapen the word as to make it meaningless when the real thing comes along.

POPS Time For A History Lesson What better day to teach the foreign exchange student in the White House a lesson about American exceptionalism, heroism, and greatness? It is virtually unthinkable that Obama could give a speech in Dresden and not allude to the bombing of the city. Most of the city’s historical monuments — which Obama’s advance team were apparently inspecting — were severely damaged or destroyed in the bombing and had to be rebuilt. Moreover, for Obama to visit both Dresden and Buchenwald would suggest precisely the sort of outrageous parallels that have become commonplace in Germany at least since the publication of Friedrich’s The Fire.

POPS If Pelosi Could Tell The Truth, She'd Say . . .
Now, if Granny Rictus Botox were to tell the truth, I think it would go something like this: Reporter: Madame Speaker, your explanation of your knowledge of waterboarding is like a sale on sh-t flavored popsicles… nobody’s buying it. So, why not tell us the truth. Pelosi: OK, here’s the truth. Yes, we were all fully briefed on the enhanced interrogation techniques being used on a small number of high-valued prisoners. We realize that the Bush administration only resorted to these measures to protect American lives, and we gave our tacit approval. That was in 2002-2003. But then in 2005-2006, we realized there had been a shift in public opinion and we could get a lot of political mileage if we teamed up with Move-On and George Soros and started screaming about torture and depicting Bush as the Greatest Monster since Vlad the Impaler. We knew the mainstream media could be relied upon to repeat and promote the narrative most favorable to us Democrats ----

POPSNew book exposes the myths of Columbine More: Read Columbine for the stunning reportage. Admire the heroism of students and teachers. Forgive, if you can, the police ineptitude and, later, their predictable cover-up. But pay particular attention to the back story: the evolution of two would-be mass murderers. And then, instead of feeling blessed that this nightmare didn't happen in your town, you might do better to ask yourself a variation of the line you hear on television at ten o'clock: Do you know who your children are?

POPSExperts: Plane that crashed had prior engine problem Why we haven't heard much about bird strikes with such disastrous effect before? It looks like birds sucking into the engines regularly, nobody raised any concern. I think, jet engine can burn freely tons of them. Without big problems. I mean, good engines. But this time engines of this particular aircraft were not able to withstand additional burden of incoming poultry. So here we have two rather discouraging conclusions: 1) Nobody care about birds and, mainly, 2) Apparently not much care was exercised about condition of aircrafts. Striking similarity with fallen bridge in Minnesota and "sound condition" of US economy on the whole. Visible sign of ongoing recession. Sporadic heroism could not be a solution for system crisis.:(
