POPSUnexploded landmines? Call the HeroRats! More: The cheapness of breeding and maintaining them is further helped by their ability to adapt to a number of environments. Once they are trained the rats seem to actively enjoy performing repetitive tasks and they do not get stressed if their trainers are changed in the way that dogs will. Plus of course – one serious advantage over dogs – they are too light to detonate a mine by themselves if they step on it. A living rat is better than a canine cadaver… The HeroRATS are currently deployed in Mozambique where they have enabled over one thousand families to reclaim their land. They have also helped with clearing areas so that power lines can be passed through – so bringing electricity which would not otherwise have been possible to over ten thousand local citizens. It is hoped that they will soon be deployed to Zambia, Congo and Angola as well, but negotiations are still underway.

POPSCompost Pile Friends they may not look nice but they are big helpers (most of the time). However, if you are concerned about the food web in your compost pile "breaking out," try the following tips: 1. Create a barrier by spreading a line of wood ash (not barbecue ash because of fat residues) or crushed egg shells around your compost pile. This will keep the activity contained within the pile. 2. A similar, but more lethal technique, is to sink small margarine containers full of stale beer, molasses and water, or yeast and water in the ground around the compost pile. Unsuspecting slugs, sow bugs, and earwigs will be attracted to the liquid, crawl inside, and drown. Earwigs can be sprayed with a solution of one tablespoon of liquid soap detergent combined with one quart of water. This will kill the earwigs that are doing damage and spare the helpful bugs that are eating dead organic material. (information from California Integrated Waste Management Board)

POPSMan searches for his 4th-grade teacher to thank her More: Though never clinically diagnosed with dyslexia, he's convinced he has a mild form of it. After the fourth grade, he returned to the same teacher for a half-year in the fifth and sixth grades. She became, essentially, his tutor. "I thrived there," he said of their extended classroom relationship. "She took a personal interest in me. She felt I was bright because of some things I excelled at, and so she found different ways to teach me. She didn't require me to read in class. And I was able to write in block letters because I had trouble with cursive and small-case letters. It really built a foundation for me."… Perhaps somebody out there might have a lead, if it's not too late, for Bugbee to express his gratitude face-to-face. That way, when he does purchase that home from Habitat for Humanity — he's on the board of directors — and before he dedicates it to his favorite teacher, he can spell her name correctly.

POPS"Yes" and "thank you" More: To the body itself: I marvel at your extraordinary ability to adapt and heal. I will do what I can to contribute to the cause.… To you, reading this: Thank you for your kindness and presence. If you need healing, please ask for help. If someone asks you for help, please say yes. For whatever reason, receiving is something many of us find difficult. We don’t want to put anyone out, be a burden. Finally, a request: Think about someone in your world who could use some help. Offer it. Think about something you need help with. Ask for it. Say yes . Say thank you .

POPS Three Accomplices in Terror Plot Identified Prosecutors have said the three others who shopped with him in Aurora, Colo., for the beauty products also accompanied him on an August 2008 flight to Pakistan for terrorism training. By that time, he had already come to authorities' attention. A criminal complaint has suggested that police acting without the FBI's knowledge might have compromised the investigation and helped blow the surveillance of Zazi by questioning a Muslim religious leader about him. The imam and Zazi's father face charges of lying to terrorism investigators; they deny the allegations. As authorities have continued to search for additional suspects, they've issued a flurry of terrorism warnings for sports complexes, hotels and transit systems based on their investigation. POPSA good Samaritan at the Atlanta airport
More: The United Methodist minister models his ministry on the parable of the good Samaritan — a stranger who helps a traveler in crisis and practices kindness, often without mentioning religion. Cook says he gets a lot of practice in these days of inflexible airline rules. He often pays a traveler's $150 change fee from his chaplain's budget or his own wallet.… These are the easy fixes, Cook says. The harder ones involve the runaways, the abused women and the people who end up at the airport with nowhere else to go. "It's literally the last stop," he says. "And then they end up in the atrium, which is right out front of our chapel. And they don't really know what to do next. They don't know where to turn."… "Your heart goes out, and sometimes you can't do anything," he says, adding that it's tough leaving people at the end of the day, knowing their problems will still be there tomorrow. "It's not always a quick fix. It's not always a little solution."

POPSI-Report Leaks Ahmadinejad Requesting Council Implement "Pure Islamic State" It’s impossible to tell if this is Dinnerjacket’s standard nutty boilerplate about the Islamic paradise eventually conquering the world or if he’s talking about a more specific “plan” for hardliners to assert themselves in Iran.... Update II: The video was also uploaded to Youtube in two parts five days ago. Update III: Jawa Reader Garduneh Mehr is also able to understand the video. Here's his take on it. 4. Throughout he makes intentionally ambiguous references to their "Goals and fondest wishes". 5. He says: "Fighting corruption and meting out justice is the source of much joy; but the greater joy is when our Primary Goal is achieved. 7. "Revolution has found its own way and a new phase has begun." 8. "A difficult period has ended; yet an even more difficult period has begun."
