POPSPolanski, rape, and the myth of "Not Like Us" More: Rapists don’t tip the homeless guy, because they have some spare change from Starbucks. Rapists don’t survive the Holocaust. Rapists don’t sit in the cubicle across from us at work, and send us funny xkcd cartoons. Rapists don’t have uneventful, long-term relationships with their college girlfriends. Rapists don’t show up on set every day, directing a critically-acclaimed movie. Rapists don’t get married, nervous in a tux at the end of the aisle. Rapists don’t spend their weekends browsing at the farmer’s market, and then stop for brunch and do the NYT crossword. Rapists don’t co-write this screenplay with us. Rapists don’t hang out at the pub with their friends, watching football and drinking just half a pint of beer, because they’re driving.… We tell these myths to ourselves and each other often, but of course, they are lies. A rapist is nothing but a man who doesn’t listen when you say stop.

POPSA Shocked Woman's Home Was Auctioned To the Highest Bidder
"I have never seen anything like it," Taylor said. "They literally threw all her stuff on the front lawn. I didn't sleep that night and it wasn't even my house." Ramirez and her family had three hours to get out of the house, police ordered. They had to stash their belongings at multiple locations and shacked up with a friend for the night as cops chained the doors of their home. With Taylor's help, Ramirez appeared before a judge two days later to explain what happened. "I had all my stuff scattered everywhere," she said. "They did this in front all my neighbors. It was so embarassing." A mistake in the Miami-Dade Clerk's Office appears to be behind the mishap, which landed Ramirez homeless for more than 24 hours. The sale was eventually reversed by a Miami-Dade judge, allowing Ramirez to return to her old digs. Ramirez said she wants to sue for the damage to her furniture. Ramirez has lived in the house for three years and recently refinanced the home with the bank.

POPSIs It Now a Crime to Be Poor? "Maybe we can’t afford the measures that would begin to alleviate America’s growing poverty " affordable housing, good schools, reliable public transportation and so forth. I would argue otherwise, but for now I’d be content with a consensus that, if we can’t afford to truly help the poor, neither can we afford to go on tormenting them."

POPSStates Forced to Cut Services to the Bone: The Opportunity Cost of the Bank Bailout
These are massive numbers. But when you remember that we spent $180 billion to bail out AIG ($12.9 billion of which went straight to Goldman), you realize that that alone would be more than enough to close the 2010 budget gap in every state in the union. Toss in the $45 billion we gave to now-making-a-profit Bank of America and the $45 billion we gave to now-making-a-profit Citigroup and we are well on the way to ensuring that no state's vital service are cut through 2011. But instead that money has gone to the banks without any fundamental reform of the system, and without any strings attached about how much they had to turn around and lend to help the real economy recover. Or, indeed, without any strings attached about having to tell us what they did with our money. So all across the country the fiscal ax is falling. According to a report by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, at least 21 states have made cuts to public health programs, 22 states have cut programs for t

POPSAttn: US House of Representatives - Hunger Hurts
Do you want to know just how easy it is to turn your back on your fellow human being? If you are not acquainted with the HOW TO, here it is in a one word nutshell… RATIONALIZE! GW Bush: ‘The government doesn't have to help poor people -- because they are lazy.’ Far right radio talker Bill Cunningham ”People aren’t poor because they lack money,” People are poor because they lack values, morals, & ethics" Glenn Beck: Poor people are ‘lazy.’ And the other day, on the issue of the poor not having affordable health care, some dolt claimed on a blog of mine…“So you hold the successful to be the problem? Should we all strive to be unsuccessful and strive for the government to take care of us? … people do not have health care because they have not been successful” Ok Congress, let’s hear the latest (excuse) for why the “working (those ones who get up every day, go off to work so they will NOT make enough money to feed their families) poor” do not make a living wage in Amer

POPS"....This Is Not Your Mother's Democratic Party This pretty well sums it up for me. I went to the public library today. I was met, outside the facility, by a petitioner who wanted me to sign something. I asked him who he represented. He muttered the "ACLU" and asked if I'd heard of ACORN. I was disgusted and walked away. I love the Library, but I know who *hangs out* there for the most part. There are many homeless, young blacks who lotter because there's nothing else to do, college-age who are looking for support/grants, greenies with their peace-not-war bags.etc. I have nothing against any of these people. They are living their lives and trying to receive help or promote their ideology. It's still a free Country...but I don't think a 2-time Bush supporter, Conservative, Republican Woman would have been the least interested in signing his petition. However, he knew where to station himself.

POPSVeterans make up 1 in 4 homeless This is a shameful travesty. The mental health toll from war is enormous. With the spotlight on the plight of Iraq veterans, they hope more will be done to prevent homelessness and provide affordable housing to the younger veterans while there's a window of opportunity. "People get tired of it. It's not glitzy that these are young, honorable, patriotic Americans. They'll just be veterans, and that happens after every war." said John Keaveney, a Vietnam veteran and a founder of New Directions in Los Angeles, which provides substance abuse help, job training and shelter to veterans. A big problem is that military training does not translate to civilian jobs. What is combat specialist supposed to do? Honorable veterans should never face this situation.

POPSFemale Vets Struggling to Get Treatment for PTSD The veteran's service organization Swords to Plowshares says female Iraq war vets are the fastest growing population of homeless. "There numbers in terms of homelessness is growing exponentially. There are very few services for them because homeless veterans services, VA services have grown up serving a male cliental," said Swords to Plowshares Amy Fair-Weather. These vets are hoping sharing their stories through pictures and books will help make the road to recovery easier for the women currently serving in Iraq.

POPSAdmiral says war veterans will suffer for years The government better ante up on this and insure they take care of our Vets. This prediction from the Adm is nothing different from what our Vets faced in Vietnam. In both cases there was no reason to send our troops into harms way and it sounds like again our government is not going to help those who were sent there to fight. This is another example of the absurdity of how those in top power of the government use our military and just toss aside those who have erved their country. We all need to help these folks returning home.

POPSZimbabwe appeals for aid to help million homeless I wouldn't trust Mugabe's involvement in the fair distribution of aid. He has made the problem so he must go. He should be fronting the World Court for genocide. Seen his death camps. Political prisoners starving to death along side others who were driven to crime to feed families.

POPSNot Only In Texas....ALL ER's Abused "Frequent Fliers" They are why, when you or your family member is hurt or really sick, it seems to take forever to get some help. They overload an already overloaded system daily. If you were to check, you'd find that ambulance companies transport many of these people also...because they know that if they arrive via EMS, they get right in - a warm cot, maybe some food and lots of attention. Primary care docs don't want them - no money in it. Mental Health services are underfunded and overwhelmed. So the answer? How about instead of raising taxes, we get rid of a bloated HHS system and spend the money on actually helping these people?
