POPSTerminally ill grandmother 'left to starve' by doctors Under NHS guidance introduced in England, medical staff can withdraw fluid and drugs from dying patents and many are put on continuous sedation until they pass away. But this approach can also mask signs of improvement, it has been argued. Miss Ball, who had been looking after her mother before she was admitted to the Conquest hospital, Hastings, East Sussex, on Jan 11, said she had to fight hospital staff for weeks before her mother was taken off the plan and given artificial feeding. Miss Ball, 42, a carer, from Robertsbridge, East Sussex, said: “My mother was going to be left to starve and dehydrate to death. It really is a subterfuge for legalised euthanasia of the elderly on the NHS. ”

POPSJack LaLanne puts a reporter through her paces More: "I don't care if people are 80 or 85 when they start," he said. "They can double their strength and double their endurance in six weeks. You won't be able to do what you could when you were 20, but do the best you can with the equipment you have." LaLanne has slowed down in recent years, but suffers no joint pain and only occasional muscle aches. He's had two knee replacements - from football and car crash injuries, not exercise. He's never taken steroids, but did develop his own line of vitamins and of course, his juicer, made famous on late-night infomercials.… "Working out three or four times a week is plenty for most people, but it's an ego thing with me," he said of his regimen. "I'd like to see how long I can keep it up." In his prime, he could lift two 150-pound dumbbells doing chest presses and set a record of 1,033 pushups in 23 minutes at age 42.

POPSRespondents question H1N1 vaccine: apathy, fear or common sense?
In the case of the H1N1 vaccine, the adjuvants used are AS03 & MF59, both containing squalene. Squalene is a naturally occurring substance present in human and animal brain tissue. By it’s self, squalene is a “safe” substance, but in it’s role as an adjuvant it can trigger an autoimmune response, where by the body actually attacks itself. In individuals with weakened immune systems this can have devastating consequences. The use of squalene in an adjuvant vaccine in the 1990’s has been linked to Gulf War syndrome and other diseases. Further, concerns are raised by the presence of Thiomersal, a preservative used in the vaccine to prolong shelf life. Thiomersal contains 47-58% mercury which many believe maybe linked to autism and a host of other neurological disorders. Although it has been suggested that there is no definitive scientific link to the onset of autism it has become a very controversial issue and has raised significant concern.

POPSTo Err is Human: Institute of Medicine report on reducing preventable medical errors Sadly, it's now 10 years after its release, and most of its recommendations have not been heeded. More: To Err Is Human asserts that the problem is not bad people in health care--it is that good people are working in bad systems that need to be made safer. Comprehensive and straightforward, this book offers a clear prescription for raising the level of patient safety in American health care. It also explains how patients themselves can influence the quality of care that they receive once they check into the hospital. This book will be vitally important to federal, state, and local health policy makers and regulators, health professional licensing officials, hospital administrators, medical educators and students, health caregivers, health journalists, patient advocates--as well as patients themselves.

POPSWilsonnnn! Who foots the bill for Mr. Wilsons' (and family) healthcare? Anyone know?

POPSExposed: GOP Congressman Who Yelled "You Lie" at Obama Speech Received $240,000 from Health Care Ind It was not the first time Wilson — attorney, U.S. Army vet and former aide to U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond — has raised eyebrows by shouting at political opponents. Seven years ago this month, the then-freshman Wilson appeared on C-SPAN’s “Washington Journal” with five-term Congressman Bob Filner (D-Calif.) to discuss whether to go to war in Iraq, action that Filner opposed but Wilson supported. In the course of the discussion, Filner noted that the U.S. supplied weapons to Saddam Hussein’s regime during the Iran-Iraq War — a fact revealed by the investigation into the Iran-Contra Affair, which discovered the Reagan administration secretly sold weapons to Iran, then under an arms embargo, to win support for freeing U.S. hostages in Lebanon and to fund the Nicaraguan contras, a counterrevolutionary rebel force that was fighting the country’s government.

POPSMD's Say: Our Patients Are Not Cattle On A Govt. Range Obamacare's bottom line--medical profits are immoral Examiner.comBridgette Wallis There is a basic principle behind the Left’s push to nationalize health insurance"making profit from health care is immoral. Since health care is a right according to the Left, it should not be treated like any other commodity. There is no room for profit in a service that is for the common good of society. No health care related services should be motivated by profit including health insurance, doctor care, hospitals, and pharmaceuticals. The government needs to take the profit motive out of health care by taking it out of the hands of those who seek profits, like corporations and stockholders. Nancy Pelosi said of the insurance companies, "They are the villains. They have been part of the problem in a major way. They are doing everything in their power to stop a public option from happening."

POPSMarines Fight Taliban With Little Aid From Afghans In a region the Taliban have lorded over for six years, and where they remain a menacing presence, American officers say their troops alone are not enough to reassure Afghans. Something is missing that has left even the recently appointed district governor feeling dismayed. "I don't get any support from the government," said the governor, Massoud Ahmad Rassouli Balouch.

POPSOpponents of U.S. healthcare reform take on... the U.K.'s National Health Service This is a good example of what happens when a political culture develops in which true facts no longer matter. In order to discredit the current plans for health-care reform, opponents are trying to tar it with the National Health Service's failures. Only problem is, most of the failures they describe are made up. I kind of like the super-glue story, though. I mean, hell, I pay for a group dental plan through my job, and my wife needs an implant, and I'm seriously considering a second mortgage to pay for it. And I have insurance. Somehow, these supposed British horror stories haven't convinced yet me that our current system is so wonderful that we shouldn't change it. Remember: the U.K. has the 18th-ranked healthcare system in the world; the U.S. has the 37th; and we spend plenty more than they do.

POPSThe What And The Why Of Hypochondria that most people who develop hypochondria tend to be neurotic, self-critical, and/or narcissistic. Some perfectionists may also suffer from hypochondria - believing that being healthy means never, ever feeling any pain or discomfort. An underlying medical condition might be a trigger for hypochondria. Some health care professionals say that people with hypochondria have a low threshold for pain. They notice internal sensations earlier than other people do.

POPSMore Lies and Fearmongering from the Right Once again, the Right-Wing Nutbars jump out from behind a rock and scream, "Booga-Booga!", trying to make Americans make an irrational choice. Single-Payer Health Care is not about the government interfering with your treatment. It's about government-appointed Medical Professionals determining what is need, rather than bloodsucking accountants and execs at Health Insurance companies who are stealing your money and contributing nothing whatsoever to people's care. It's about having the option to go to whatever doctor you want, and the freedom to get second opinions. It's about instant approval, instead of waiting for greedy people weighing whether to screw you over or not on your healthcare. It's about everyone having adequate healthcare for a reasonable price, rather than just a small minority for 150% of what it needs to cost. Right-Wing group-speak benefits no one but Big Health Insurance, and the Republicans they have in their pockets.
