POPSOne hundred and fifty years ago on Aug. 27 “When the discovery happened, the few people who were there and not involved in the war, went around and bought all the property they could and had outside investors come in,” Black said. “But the real heyday of the development happened from 1864-1870. It’s that 11-year period when the little river valley was the world’s leading supplier of oil. ”The “little river valley” in western Pennsylvania earned the nickname Petrolia. “I would see this as less of an anniversary to note for celebration and more of an anniversary to note how far we’ve come and the serious moment that we’re at right now,” said Brian Black, an energy historian at Pennsylvania State University and author of the book Petrolia. “Energy transitions happen and I argue that we’re in one right now and that we need to aggressively look to the future to what’s going to happen after petroleum.”

POPSWoman teaches dog to read more: Willow was also the second witness at the couple's wedding at New York City Hall in March - signing the marriage certificate with an inky paw print. Ms Rosenberg even takes the 10lb English terrier mix on business trips because Willow is more than happy to share her carrying case with other animals. "I once had to fly from California back to New York with a rabbit and two guinea pigs. Going through airport security was hilarious because first I pulled out the rabbit from the bag, followed by the guinea pigs and then the dog."

POPSSimple Living, Trucker Style Go to the source for the list of this guy's material possessions, including his two "luxury items". I am trying to imagine living this way but am fairly certain that I could not do it and be happy. No room for, or way of life for, dogs or cats or other creatures that I care for. No room for photo albums or artwork or plants or quilts or memorabilia.... :(

POPSEveryone is a book of blood
...until he realizes that there are greater forces at work than he had ever thought. And there, I think, is a story with a perfect happy ending - he goes through hell and he comes through on the other side, utterly changed, utterly transformed.... At the end of 'In The Hills, The Cities', both protagonists die, but they gain meaning, extraordinary meaning. Perhaps not a meaning that one would want to celebrate... It's ambiguous. But when they see the beasts in the hills, some new vision is presented to them which hitherto they wouldn't even have been capable of imagining.... I very much like the ambiguity or the ambivalence of a moment which can be terrible and significant simultaneously, the way that many of the pivotal moments in our lives are very often rites of passage moments in which things are lost which can never be claimed again. Yet the territory ahead is, by virtue of the fact that it is new, also exciting and extraordinary." Clive Barker on the books of blood
