POPSUighurs imprisoned in Guantanamo since 2002: China dictating policy to the US ? These poor men, Muslims from China - unjustly imprisoned - GW Bush acknowledged this in 2003 - and now exiled with nothing but the clothes they stand up in. This is going to be an increasing common price of US debt - their debt holders will be able to dictate US foreign policy, or threaten to dump their bonds or demand payment, effectively destroying the US economy. Ironically this is the same tactic used by the US against the UK and France over the Suez conflict. They intended to fight Egypt over control of the Suez Canal, but the US said `get your military out of there, or else` . All troops were withdrawn within 2 weeks ! I heard on the radio today, that this was the exact moment when the British Empire died. Not a bad thing, of course; but China, the Saudis and oil producers hold most of the US debt - so look out world, there could be interesting times ahead :)

POPSEnsign back in D.C.; group plans ethics complaint In yet another blow against ethics, Republican Sen. John Ensign returned to the capital today to handshakes from colleagues. What does this say of his colleagues? Do they condone his behavior? Senator John Ensign called for Bill Clinton and Larry Craig to resign over sexual misconduct, and then cheated on his wife with a married staffer. This "defender of marriage" should have the dignity to resign now. But dignity is in short supply in politics. Therefore, it is business as usual in the nations capital. Does his affair mean we cannot trust him to speak for his constituents? If nothing else, it lessens his authority on ethics issues but we already know that any talk of ethics reform from politicians is nothing more than hot air. If you cannot live up to the vows you make to your spouse in front of God then how can you be trusted to live up to your promises to the people who put you in office? The 'ole boys club' ethics wins again.

POPSMichelle Obama royal error downplayed Royal regulations significantly limit any touching of the British royal, only allowing for handshakes when the queen offers her hand. Time said a similar uproar occurred in 2000 when then Australian Prime Minister John Howard appeared to touch the queen while guiding her through a crowd.

POPS Red Alert: Redefining the Global System
The Americans, the British and the Japanese believe stimulus is the way to go to put the global economy back on track, while Germany, the economic heavyweight of Europe, prefers instead to export its way out of the recession. This is not a debate that will be resolved by the end of this summit (if at all), leaving G-20 members and the struggling economies watching from the outside with the impression that they have little choice but to fend for themselves in this severe economic environment. The Americans do not just disagree with the Europeans on economics — in spite of Europe’s enthusiasm for U.S. President Barack Obama, the EU members at the summit made clear their unwillingness to make any meaningful contributions to the U.S. war effort in Afghanistan beyond a few aid packages. With the Western coalition in Afghanistan looking more and more like a one-man show, the Americans are branching out of their post-World War II system of alliance in search of new strategic partners.

POPSBush’s Last Bullet: Why the US Attacked Syria
Equally important, is that Syria has been improving its relations with Europe, including its once greatest detractor, France. Not only is the relationship between Syria, its neighbors and the EU significantly improving, but also the type of language used to describe such relationships: endless accolades of Syria’s important regional role in bringing peace and stability to the Middle East and so forth. The European response to the US military raid also highlights the already existing rift between the US and the EU. “France calls for restraint and underlines its attachment to the strict respect of the territorial integrity of states,” read a statement by Sarkozy’s office. Foreign Minister Miguel Moratinos of Spain demanded an end to “such dangerous events.” The claims that US national security comes first, and that Al Qaeda terrorists are infiltrating the border into Iraq, hardly suffice. In recent weeks, US military officials admitted that “Syria has been more cooperative than in t
