The bill does limit eligibility to individuals who are "lawfully present in a State in the United States," but that language would be ineffective to prevent handouts to illegal aliens. (Sec. 242(a)(1)). Under U.S. immigration law, someone's status as an illegal alien is not determined by lawful presence in a State. As a result, this language will have no effect in preventing illegal aliens from receiving the credit. Critics suggest that if the intent of the bill is to preclude illegal aliens from receiving this subsidy, the current language is woefully inadequate and would have to be dramatically revised. At the same time as Congress is considering burdening taxpayers with the cost of health care . . .

POPSWe 'Hope' Spending Will Lift Us Out Of Debt If Barack Obama was truly serious about helping the economy, he would push across-the-board cuts for all federal agencies not directly involved basic safety and security, impose a government hiring freeze so that the size of the government would shrink through natural attrition, and lower various taxes so that companies would be encouraged to grow their businesses. Such a plan isn't too far off from what I've heard some conservative Democrats and Republicans are promoting. But I don't think Barack Obama really cares all that much about getting America out of this recession. He seems far more interested in using the economy as a weapon of fear to impose an ideological agenda. I hope he enjoys the euphoria of his brief popularity while it lasts. It is melting rapidly, and unlikely to last the coming spring thaw.

Shame on them! says the President! From the WSJ: A few quick facts about Wall Street bonuses. The pretext for the political outrage was the New York comptroller’s report this week on the aggregate data for bonuses in 2008. That “irresponsible” bonus pool of $18 billion was for every worker in the New York financial industry, from top dogs to secretaries. This bonus pool fell 44% in 2008, the largest percentage decline in 30 years. The average bonus was $112,000; bonuses typically make up most of an employee’s salary on Wall Street. The comptroller estimates that this decline will cost New York State $1 billion in lost tax revenue and New York City $275 million.
