"I am outraged because they're the ones who should know the law," said Rob. "They are the ones who help lock up criminals who violate the law, and yet they don't obey the law they're trying to enforce." "I think what those people should think about are the people who really struggle with the challenges they have as disabled people and who are trying really hard to participate in society and imagine what it would be like to trade places with them for just one day," said Kapreilian Disability placard abuse is a criminal offense. It also carries a $500 fine and your license can be suspended.

Save Some Money When Buying Wheelchairs
iregress
by iregress  9-13-2009
The reality cannot be ignored that wheelchairs can cause a person a big sum of money, especially if the patient is going to utilize the specialized ones. Some of these patients are those that are completely paralyzed and are in need of a special kind of assistant device to use inside the house as well as outside. But the wheelchair they require can be a bit costly. For this reason, you can turn to used wheelchairs.

Guaranteed Health Care in Iraq – But Not for U.S.
disenchantedcitizen
by disenchantedcitizen  9-9-2009    4
According to the American political right-wing, government-guaranteed health care is good for Iraqis, but not good for us. They decry even a limited public option for us, but gleefully imposed upon the Iraqis what they label here as "socialism," with much Democratic Party member support. We have (thus far) sacrificed more blood to wrest Iraq from tyranny than we lost on 9/11. And, the total money spent in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan is more than the funding required to guarantee minimally decent health care for U.S. citizens. The most senior members of the Republican establishment - and some Democrats like Max Baucus (D-MT) - have gladly spent more taxpayer funds to ensure health care as a Constitutional right in Iraq than they are willing to spend to give us any level of guaranteed coverage. Can someone please explain why our government favors the health care of Iraqis over its own citizens?

Barney Frank Wants Cabinet Post
merrie
by merrie  9-7-2009    2
Frank talks about how he struggled as a gay man growing up in blue-collar Bayonne, N.J. He dated women throughout high school and college, but knew he was gay at 13. Still, he delayed revealing his sexuality until he had established a foothold in the House. In the 501-page tome " to be released later this month " Frank is described by people who know him well as a masterful legislator, an impatient boss, and “socially handicapped.” One of the most riveting parts of the book is Frank’s recollection of his ethics scandal, when he paid a male prostitute for sex. Various media outlets called for Frank to resign, but he persevered by admitting his mistakes and asking the ethics committee to investigate him in 1989. Many Republicans, including then-Rep. Larry Craig (Idaho), called for serious sanctions against Frank, who was ultimately reprimanded by the House, 408-18. (California Democratic Reps. Nancy Pelosi and Henry Waxman both voted against the measure.)

Woman in Wheelchair Heckled and Booed at NJ Town Hall Meeting

Footage of the meeting at clip source. The word shame isn't a word that I think of or say, but as I watched this footage, my thoughts just kept repeating shame, shame, over and over again. This is a room full of older adults acting worse than badly behaved children. I'm beginning to agree with a comment I read at HuffPo: this anger is not about health care reform. Some people are frightened because the USA that they understand is disappearing and their response is to lash out at any perceived cause. I don't feel sorry for them because I am old enough to know their USA. I grew up in it. I hate it. And I cheer its demise. I wish for a better and healthier USA for young people.

Strictly speaking, CPR may not have been called for in #5. He was losing consciousness, not having chest pains. And GB gets points for offering a hand and making sure the guy didn't just smack his melon on the deck. But as someone who has done 1st aid out at Burning Man , trust me... when someone says "I'm passing out", take them at their word. Put an arm around their shoulder and (as GB did in fact do) don't let their melon smack the deck. Still a douchebag, though. ;-)

"you hear a lot of horror stories about such systems, most of them false. French health care is excellent. Canadians with chronic conditions are more satisfied with their system than their U.S. counterparts. And Medicare is highly popular, as evidenced by the tendency of town-hall protesters to demand that the government keep its hands off the program." If a taxpayer funded health care system is so terrible where are the howls of protest from Canadians, Australians, French, Swiss?

Obama fights back as bid to reform US healthcare stalls
foxyarse
by foxyarse  8-8-2009    1
"The America I know and love is not one in which my parents or my baby with Down's syndrome will have to stand in front of Obama's 'death panel' so his bureaucrats can decide… whether they are worthy of healthcare," she wrote on her Facebook page. Palin's astonishing comments were an incendiary contribution to a national debate that is threatening to spill over into civil disorder. Scores of "town hall" public meetings held by Democratic politicians in recent days have been disrupted by Republican supporters or protesters linked to groups funded by the healthcare industry. Some meetings have been cancelled out of a fear of violence. In Missouri six people were arrested at one event. A group of supporters even hung an effigy of a Democratic congressman outside his office; another Democrat has received death threats.

Obama's Revealing Body Language (updated and expanded))
merrie
by merrie  8-1-2009    10
As some AT commentators point out, this picture becomes a metaphor for ObamaCare. The elderly are left in the back, with only the kindness of the Crowleys of the world, the stand up guys, to depend on. The government has other priorities. One of the major subtexts of the health care debate involves the public's fear of indifferent, powerful bureaucrats ruling their lives. It is one thing to wait in line at the DMV to find out which other line you should wait in, in order to begin the process of waiting for multiple bureaucrats to go through the motions of processing your request. I have spent entire afternoons going through this process. But when we get to health care, waiting often means enduring pain and dysfunction longer than necessary, sometimes a worsening of the condition, and sometimes death. That's why I think this image will have genuine resonance. It captures something that older Americans in particular can relate to.
