7 Writing Habits of Amazing Writers
Aribeth
by Aribeth  9-3-2008    2
This extremely prolific writer has won numerous awards, including the National Book Award. She writes in longhand, and while she doesn’t have a formal schedule, she says she prefers to write in the morning, before breakfast . She’s a creative writing professor, and on the days she teaches, she says she writes for an hour or 45 minutes before leaving for her first class. On other days, when the writing is going well, she can work for hours without a break — and has breakfast at 2 or 3 in the afternoon!

Translation of Russian American License Plates
Kelika
by Kelika  9-1-2008
"Sometimes they use only Latin alphabet letters, sometimes use tricks to use Latin letters or even numbers for a Cyrillic letter substitute, thus looking ambiguous for simple Americans but very obvious for any Russian meeting such a plate on the road causing him to understand that this is his fellow immigrant guy is driving ahead. We gonna decipher some of those secret messages American Russians are putting on their plates down there."

Random Acts of Kindness
zalisan
by zalisan  8-30-2008
Lots of folks have already commented on Zen Habits web site about their willingness to help create a website/service dedicated to this enterprise. I myself do not have the qualifications to contribute to this creation but would certainly participate on such a site. If you or anyone you know could then please check it out and network with those who have said they too would help. Wat an incredible idea whos time is now.

Obese Alabama State Employees Will Pay
Allison Van Dusen
by Allison Van Dusen  8-22-2008
Alabama's State Employees' Insurance Board has approved a plan to charge state workers starting in January if they don't have free health screenings, according to the AP. Should the screenings turn up serious blood pressure, cholesterol, glucose or weight problems the employees have a year to turn things around or start paying $25 for insurance that's otherwise free. Alabama already charges workers who smoke but obesity is an even bigger problem for the state, which is ranked second in terms of national obesity rates. To be fair, the state will offer employees access to a wellness program to help them. But you have to wonder - is an extra bill of $25 a month really going to get people to change their bad habits and/or start paying attention to their health? It'll be interesting to find out.
