California sprouts 'green rush' from marijuana
kkcapricorn
by kkcapricorn  7-18-2009    3
Even people accustomed to buying marijuana over the counter are impressed when they visit the Farmacy, a dispensary-cum-New Age apothecary with three locations in Los Angeles. Decorated in soft beige and staffed by workers in lab coats, the Venice store sells organic toiletries, essential oils and incense along with 25 types of pot stored in glass jars, including strains such as Beverly Bubba and Third Eye. Anyone can shop there, but to buy the cannabis-infused gelato, olive oil, soft drinks and other "edibles," customers must show a doctor's recommendation, have the information verified by the doctor's office and obtain a patient identification number for future visits. Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco, wants the state to tax and regulate all pot as it does alcohol. State Board of Equalization chairwoman Betty Yee, a supporter, projects the law would generate $990 million annually through a $50-per-ounce fee for retailers and $392 million in sales taxes. (The state now co

Everything You Need to Know About Plastic

Deplasticizing Your Food Chemicals are most likely to migrate from plastic into food when exposed to high heat, harsh soaps, and fat. These precautionary measures can help you play it safe. AVOID MICROWAVING IN PLASTIC. Heat speeds the release of chemicals into food. “People are being sold microwave-safe plastic, when in fact we’re not being told what’s in there and the rate at which these chemicals leach out,” says researcher Frederick vom Saal. Avoid this uncertainty by using ceramic or glass instead. EXPLORE THE ALTERNATIVES. “I have one word for you: glass,” says Terry Hassold, a professor of genetics at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, who has studied the health effects of bisphenol-A (BPA) on mice. You can also store your food in ceramic containers, waxed- and brown paper bags, and metal canisters made for hot and cold food. USE PAPER–NOT CLING-WRAP. Many studies indicate that most of the cling wrap used by delis and grocery stores contains high levels o

Goodbye farmers markets, CSAs, and roadside stands
papananook
by papananook  4-2-2009
Farmers markets. Local farmers. Real milk. Fresh eggs. Vegetable stands. Those are things we not only all want, but things we are actively getting involved in, and things we very much need. And where they are truly good, they are growing. The international financial corporations which have wreaked havoc around the world with astounding nonsensical "solutions" that are destructive of everyone but them, are brothers to the international agribusiness giants (Monsanto, Cargill, Tysons, ADM, etc.) which are just as aggressively after their own form of "taking." Just seeds, animals, water, land. And freedom.

10 Ideas Changing the World Right Now
balthazarus
by balthazarus  4-1-2009    2
 7. The Rent-A-Country Countries like Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Qatar and South Korea — well-off states without enough good land or water to feed their people — started to look outside their borders. "It's economically not viable to grow food in the desert," says David Hallam, deputy director of trade and markets for the U.N.'s Food and Agriculture Organization. "They said, 'If we can't grow our own food, we'll grow it somewhere else.'" 8. Biobanks the U.S.'s first national biobank — a safe house for tissue samples, tumor cells, DNA and, yes, even blood — that would be used for research into new treatments for diseases. Think of it as an organic bank account. You put your biomaterial in and earn medical interest in the form of knowledge and therapies that grow out of that deposit — no monetary reward, just the potential that you might benefit from the accumulated data at some later date.

The Bisphenol-A Debate: A Suspect Chemical in Plastic Bottles and Cans
gbh48
by gbh48  12-21-2008
Depending on whom you talk to, BPA is either perfectly safe or a dangerous health risk. The plastics industry says it is harmless, but a growing number of scientists are concluding, from some animal tests, that exposure to BPA in the womb raises the risk of certain cancers, hampers fertility and could contribute to childhood behavioral problems such as hyperactivity.

Biogas offers benefit for transport & environment
spirithiker
by spirithiker  12-5-2008
Unlike wind, solar or hydrogen, biogas capture has widely been seen as too small-scale for use in industrial-scale heat or electricity generation. As a transportation fuel, however, biogas has growing support. France, Sweden, Germany, Austria and India are all investing in methods of turning landfill gas into a useable alternative to fossil fuels. France has been running a biomethane-powered bus since 1994 and is planning an entirely clean public transportation system by 2011. 35% of food production in Japan and Britain, and 50% in the U.S. ends up as rotting garbage. This provides a plentiful supply of biogas and therefore a much better source than using food crops to power motor vehicles.
