POPS"Skyscraper greenhouses to sprout in crowded cities" more: That way, "we would save 70 percent on the cost of fresh produce because right now 70 percent of the price is transport and storage costs," he said. Fresh and healthy produce would thereby also become more readily available to those with slim budgets, he added. No vertical greenhouse exists yet, but "several cities in Scandinavia and in China have expressed an interest," Hassle said. Each installation would cost around 30 million dollars (21 million euros), much more than a regular greenhouse. But the investment would rapidly turn a profit, he insisted.

POPS Happy Poison Piven Day Maybe it's simply a sign of how I was raised, but pretty much every day is Earth Day. We cut off the lights when we leave a room. With the exception of the baby, we take showers instead of baths. We grow some of our own vegetables and spices, and hand weed and use organic remedies to minimize pests instead of using chemicals. Given more time, I'd even provide more "green" meat for my family, hunting and fishing to harvest those other meaty emitters of greenhouse gasses and biowaste for the children! But Earth Day isn't about protecting the Earth for many of those involved. It's about regulating and controlling people, especially people that they find objectionable. Thanks, but I'll pass. POPSFood Dangers Increasing. Frankenfoods Are Stealing Our Nutrients. In 1935, our nation boasted more than 6.8 million farms. By 1964, with the advent of pesticides, fertilizers and other new technologies, that number fell to fewer than 3.2 million farms. And they call this progress? In 1935, one farm fed about 18 people, by 1964 one farm fed 60 people. In 2007, the most recent year for which statistics are available, 2.2 million farms remained, each one feeding 137 people on average. A study in HortScience Review cites three studies showing that fruits and vegetables are less nutritious than they were a few decades ago. Because farmers want food to grow faster, for quicker profit, crops no longer have time to absorb natural nutrients and chemical-based fertilizers can’t provide those nutrients. Money wins out again. And consumers lose, again.

POPSThe Three Sisters of Life Planting these vegetables together benefits both the plants and people. The corn stalks provide a pole for the beans to climb. The beans help stabilize the corn from wind, and beans fix nitrogen on their roots, improving the quality of the soil. Squash vines act as mulch, shading and smothering weeds, and help keep the soil cool and moist. All three were turned back into the soil to add organic matter, improving its fertility and structure. The three eaten together supply nearly all nutritional requirements a body needs. "When the oak leaves grow to the size of a squirrel’s ear – then it’s time to plant."
